Book excerpt: A sudden and unexpected phone call changes the life of the protagonist, bringing him back to his great passion: the study of dolphins and their language. The opportunity to take part in a scientific expedition creates food for thought with regards to the unknown and the fragility of human life. After a long journey and a series of very special encounters, he arrives at the mecca: Bimini. It is here that, along with a group of researchers from around the world, he begins his research on the interpretation of the language of dolphins. Many days of diving on a fabulous sea and a constant relationship with the dolphins punctuate the march of time. The beautiful Caribbean island is the setting where a series of events occur and where we meet very special characters. Two days before the end of the expedition, something unexpected and very significant happens. It becomes clear to all members of the expedition just how strong the bond between man and dolphin can be. Based on a true story, this book deals with the issue of the protection of the seas and all creatures therein, particularly dolphins. The story provides different interpretations of the relationship between humans and dolphins, showing that is a profound and a mutual one.

Theme parks have become dynamic destinations where people test their courage and learn to have fun in safe environments. Theme parks are also economic catalysts that offer employment, as they require a supporting structure of roads, hotels, restaurants, and shops. Most importantly, they give us a place to celebrate life's milestones. After each reason that theme parks are modern shrines, the author presents a snapshot of a park. These snapshots represent theme parks around the globe. For example, Disneyland in California represents the ideal of nostalgia while Germany's Europa-Park portrays the virtue of interacting with locals. Take an interesting, informative, and fun look at why theme parks around the globe are so magical with The Ride of Your Life.

Book excerpt: In book four of the award-winning Austin Family Chronicles young adult series from Madeleine L’Engle, author of A Wrinkle in Time, Vicky Austin experiences the difficulties and joys of growing up. "This wasn't the first time that I'd come close to death, but it was the first time I'd been involved in this part of it, this strange, terrible saying goodbye to someone you've loved." These are Vicky Austin's thoughts as she stands near Commander Rodney's grave while her grandfather, who himself is dying of cancer, recites the funeral service. Watching his condition deteriorate over that long summer is almost more than she can bear. Then, in the midst of her struggle, she finds herself the center of attention for three young men. Leo, Commander Rodney's son, turns to her as an old friend seeking comfort but longing for romance. Zachary, whose attempted suicide inadvertently caused Commander Rodney's death, sees her as the one sane and normal person who can give some meaning to his life. And Adam, a serious young student working at the nearby marine-biology station, discovers Vicky, his friend's little sister, incipient telepathic powers that can help him with his experiments in dolphin communications. Vicky finds solace and brief moments of peace in her poetry, but life goes on around her, and the strain intensifies as she confronts matters of love and of death, of dependence and of responsibility, universal concerns that we all must face. The inevitable crisis comes and Vicky must rely on openness, sensitivity, and the love of others to overcome her private grief. Once again, Madeleine L'Engle has written a story that revels in the drama of vividly portrayed characters and events of the spiritual and moral dimensions of common human experiences. Book excerpt: "Listen, guys, this is not a college. It's a job. We get to training camp, your ass has cramps, I'll cut you in a minute." --Jimmy Johnson Love him or hate him, Jimmy Johnson's headline-making new gig with the Miami Dolphins made him football's comeback kid of the year. In this no-holds-barred book--the first all-access look at a coach in action since John Feinstein's #1 bestseller A Season on the Brink--you'll get an up-close, powerfully personal, and brutally honest chronicle of Johnson's first year on the job . . . on and off the field. After legendary Dolphins coach Don Shula was pushed into retirement, former Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson came back into the spotlight, and with him, his famously uncompromising attitude and standards of perfection and professionalism. For Shark Among Dolphins, Johnson allowed award-winning reporter Steve Hubbard to sit in on team practices, player meetings, postgame speeches, and much more: to see it, hear it, and most important of all . . . tell it, exactly the way it is. Shark Among Dolphins reveals insider insights into Jimmy's feud and frustration with Jerry, Barry, and the 'Boys. It details his speeches that sparked upsets over New England and Buffalo, and his draft and personal decisions, from axing selfish stars to anointing rookies like Zack Thomas. It shows why corporations pay $40,000 to hear how this master psychologist molds and motivates people to win championships.

Book Synopsis Adam Scott by : Gerald Hollingsworth
Download or read book Adam Scott written by Gerald Hollingsworth and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book depicts the revelations of a boy with aspirations. However, his young life was met with encounters that would hinder and ultimately prevent any accomplishments from being achieved. Becoming a Miami Dolphin football player or an astronaut could only be a dream. The culprit is a disease called muscular dystrophy. His type was duchenne, which is incurable. Words associated with this disease are muscular weakness, deterioration, and extreme weight loss. Requirements are heavy metal leg braces, custom-made back braces, and wheelchairs. This book takes you on a journey of Adam’s life as he coped with not only the aforementioned disease but also the daily variety of meds, oxygen treatments, and leg massages. His education consisted of a special education school when it was determined that at a regular high school, he endured too many obstacles, such as impatient teachers and students who abusively made fun of his back brace and twisted body. His final years of schooling would be from his bed at home with a tutor. During his teen years, girlfriends, attending dances, amusement parks, and participating or being a spectator of sports are all identifiable with those years. Adam had two companions, which weren’t girls. They were a wheelchair and a home hydraulic lift with a seat that would transport him from room to room and to the bathroom. A main feature of this illness is a contemptible daily pain. When Adam asked his parents if he would be remembered, reading his life story answers that question. Adam Scott touched the hearts of all who knew him. Your heart will be touched too.

Download or read book Facing the Wild written by Chilla Bulbeck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do wild animals mean to humans? Will they survive both rampant habitat loss and extinction caused by human encroachment and, as ecotourists, our enthusiasm for them? With ecotourism now the fastest growing segment of tourism, and encounters with wild animals - be it swimming with dolphins, going on safari or bird watching - ever more popular, these are critical questions. Yet until now little has been known about why people crave encounters with wild animals and the meaning for the ecotourism industry, conservation efforts and society at large. Facing the Wild is the first serious empirical examination of why people seek out animals in their natural environment, what the desire for this experience tells us about the meanings of animals, nature, authenticity and wilderness in contemporary industrialized societies, and whether visitors change their environmental perspectives and behaviour, as the custodians of wildlife parks would like them to. The book explores the contradictions and ambivalence that so many people experience in the presence of 'wild nature' - in loving it we may diminish it and in the act of wanting to see it we may destroy it. Ultimately the book makes a case for 'respectful stewardship' of a 'hybrid nature' and provides insight for both practitioners and ecotourists alike.
