Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodism Successful, and the Internal Causes of Its Success Such statements, emanating in the one case from the best intellect, and in the other from the highest position among the people of this country, and in both cases from citizens of ripe age and extensive experience and observation, are enough to demonstrate the fact, that Methodism has at last become a power of no secondary importance on this continent; and yet it is a question among Methodists themselves, who ought to know their own affairs, whether their denomination is not still higher, stronger, more in uential and powerful in Europe than in the United States. One thing is certainly clear, that Methodism, which began in obscurity and feebleness, has achieved for itself everywhere a most wonderful success. This point is generally conceded; but there are few persons, nevertheless, on either side of the Atlantic, outside of the pale of Methodism, who have taken the pains to learn the exact character and extent of this success; and there are fewer persons still, I think, either outside or within the denomination, who have so examined or studied its origin and progress, as to be able to state, with philosophical correctness, the organic causes to which its remarkable prosperity and growth are to be attributed. It may be taken as having to do with the evangelistic, rather than the ecclesiastical, side of Methodism, and particularly with the organisations and movements which have been started in recent years; or, it may be taken as having reference to the origin, the polity, and the history of the various Methodist bodies. The former interpretation has not been left entirely out of view. It has been considered, wherever convenient, in most of the chapters, and it has occupied the whole of the chapter on "Methodism As It Is." Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Every Methodist Should Know For many years the author has felt the need in his pastorate of a book briefly setting forth the things con cerning the Methodist Church which every Methodist ought to know. He has searched through the publications of the Methodist Church, North and South, and has failed to find such a compendium. He has found many excellent books carrying parts of the information needed, but none of them covers the whole field. The doctrines and polity of the Methodist Church have been so well stated that it would be impossible to improve the statements by an attempt to vary them in such a way asto make them one'a own. The author, therefore, desiring only to be helpful to the Church, has quoted freely the statements of others. The book, in fact, is more a compilation of authoritative statements of others than the work of the author. The liberal quotations are made and properly acknowledged from the Discipline, the Methodist Armor, The Mem bership We Join the Church, Stand ard Catechism, Fundamental Doctrines of Methodism, Things Methodists Believe, and The Law of God on Tithes and Offerings. The book has been prepared with a hope that it may be made a kind of textbook in the various organizations of the Methodist Church to bring our Methodist people into a knowledge of what all intelligent Methodists ought to know and thereby increase their interest in and zeal for the Methodist Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Wesley and the Methodist Societies IN my book on john Wesley and the Religious Societies I have traced Wesley's course until that Christmas Eve, in 1739, when he met a small company of earnest people whose supreme desire was to know how they might be saved from their sins.' I have been so much encouraged by the reception accorded to my book that I have been made bold to attempt a still more formidable task. I hope to be able to describe the work of Wesley down to the time of his death. In this volume I watch him as he lays the foundations of the Methodist Church. They were so carefully and securely laid that, up to the present time, they have determined the character of the building erected on them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church Some might expect, in such a work, a discussion of the reasons for certain rules, and the interpretation to be put upon them. There can be no doubt that a know ledge of both these will be promoted by the informa tion which is here communicated, as to the time when, and the connection in which the rules were introduced, and the changes they have undergone. But to set forth his own Opinion on points of discipline was no part of the author's plan; nor would it have become either his age in the ministry, or his station in the Church. His object will be accomplished, if he shall promote, in any degree, an understanding of the Discipline of the Church, and an attachment to those great principles of its-economy, which, amid all the changes of form, have remained the same from the beginning, and which have proved so signally successful in spreading Scrip tural holiness over these lands. We shall look, for information upon this point, first to its 'Discipline' and other official documents, and next to the statements of its Bishops, ministers, elders and lay members. The constitution and rules, the articles and canons of the Methodist Church, are contained in a little volume of 240 pages, known as 'The Discipline, ' and entitled - 'The Doctrines and Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church.' The latest edition, (of 1856, ) from which we quote, is certified as correct, and recommended to all Methodists as needful, 'next to the word of God, ' for their instruction and guidance, by the signatures of the Bishops, as follows: Beverly Waugh; Matthew Simpson; Thomas A. Morris; Osmon C. Baker; Edmund S. Janes; Levi Scott; Edward R. Ames This volume, after the 'Articles of Religion, ' gives the 'General Rules' of the Methodist Church. The volume is, therefore, a Jubilee Memorial, and an offering to the Methodist public. Like the Banyan tree, whose branches spread out, then incline towards, and eventually reach, the earth, where they strike root until vigorous offshoots become both a progeny and support to the parent stock, so there are innate forces in Methodism which cause it to spread out in all directions, till a cluster of Churches is formed, in time becoming selfsupporting, but yet maintaining a vital and glad connection with the parent Church. The truth of this has been verified and illustrated in this land. The plain narrative of this growth is given in this volume. The authors are not historians, but more like annalists They have not exhaustively studied the facts, interrogated the spirit, and deduced the important lessons, which Methodism in this land presents to the historian. They have compiled and put into a succinct form the facts and annals of the early Methodist story. Their plan has been, of set purpose, to be full when writing about the first and pioneer work of the Church, but to be brief and summary when relating its more recent achievements. They could not enlarge upon the recent, as they felt at liberty to do upon the earlier story. The work was too delicate, and the perspective too near for them to attempt it. They preferred sketching the more distant landscape, and have dealt with the nearer foreground in a few outlines. This may be disappointing to some, but worthy deeds and lives in recent years will be dealt with in due time, when we are considerably older, but by other hands than the writers of this volume.
