Book Synopsis Holographic Sensors by : Ali Kemal Yetisen
Download or read book Holographic Sensors written by Ali Kemal Yetisen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a theoretical and experimental approach for the rapid fabrication, optimization and testing of holographic sensors for the quantification of pH, organic solvents, metal cations, and glucose in solutions. Developing non-invasive and reusable diagnostics sensors that can be easily manufactured will support the monitoring of high-risk individuals in any clinical or point-of-care setting. Sensor fabrication approaches outlined include silver-halide chemistry, laser ablation and photopolymerization. The sensors employ off-axis Bragg diffraction gratings of ordered silver nanoparticles and localized refractive index changes in poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and polyacrylamide films. The sensors exhibited reversible Bragg peak shifts, and diffracted the spectrum of narrow-band light over the wavelength range λpeak ≈ 495-1100 nm. Clinical trials of glucose sensors in the urine samples of diabetic patients demonstrated that they offer superior performance compared to commercial high-throughput urinalysis devices. Lastly, a generic smartphone application to quantify colorimetric tests was developed and tested for both Android and iOS operating systems. The sensing platform and smartphone application may have implications for the development of low-cost, reusable and equipment-free point-of-care diagnostic devices.
Book Synopsis Daylight Design of Buildings by : Nick Baker
Download or read book Daylight Design of Buildings written by Nick Baker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To complement the critical and objective view gleaned from the study of some sixty buildings, this design manual has been developed to provide a more synthetic approach to the principles which lie behind successful daylight design. These principles are illustrated with examples drawn from the case study buildings. The emphasis throughout has been on practical methods to improve design, rather than techniques studied for any intrinsic interest. The book provides the necessary tools to assist the designer to provide well daylit interiors, and shows that good daylight design is not a restriction on architectural expression but, on the contrary, acts as an inspiration and foundation for good architecture.
Book Synopsis Information Arts by : Stephen Wilson
Download or read book Information Arts written by Stephen Wilson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to the work and ideas of artists who use—and even influence—science and technology. A new breed of contemporary artist engages science and technology—not just to adopt the vocabulary and gizmos, but to explore and comment on the content, agendas, and possibilities. Indeed, proposes Stephen Wilson, the role of the artist is not only to interpret and to spread scientific knowledge, but to be an active partner in determining the direction of research. Years ago, C. P. Snow wrote about the "two cultures" of science and the humanities; these developments may finally help to change the outlook of those who view science and technology as separate from the general culture. In this rich compendium, Wilson offers the first comprehensive survey of international artists who incorporate concepts and research from mathematics, the physical sciences, biology, kinetics, telecommunications, and experimental digital systems such as artificial intelligence and ubiquitous computing. In addition to visual documentation and statements by the artists, Wilson examines relevant art-theoretical writings and explores emerging scientific and technological research likely to be culturally significant in the future. He also provides lists of resources including organizations, publications, conferences, museums, research centers, and Web sites.

Book Synopsis Design Dictionary by : Michael Erlhoff
Download or read book Design Dictionary written by Michael Erlhoff and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2007-12-07 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dictionary provides a stimulating and categorical foundation for a serious international discourse on design. It is a handbook for everyone concerned with design in career or education, who is interested in it, enjoys it, and wishes to understand it. 110 authors from Japan, Austria, England, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United States, and elsewhere have written original articles for this design dictionary. Their cultural differences provide perspectives for a shared understanding of central design categories and communicating about design. The volume includes both the terms in use in current discussions, some of which are still relatively new, as well as classics of design discourse. A practical book, both scholarly and ideal for browsing and reading at leisure.
Book Synopsis Our Nanotechnology Future by : Christian Ngô
Download or read book Our Nanotechnology Future written by Christian Ngô and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: his easy-to-grasp book introduces nanotechnology, a fast growing field with applications in a large number of areas. Nanotechnology is increasingly present in manufactured products and in daily life objects. It uses less raw materials to provide similar, improved or new functions for materials and systems. It also allows to cut down costs of objects and processes. This introductory book is divided in two parts. One presents the basics of this new field and introduce the physics involved and its consequences. The topics that are addressed are about nanoscience and nanotechnology, quantum effects, nanomaterials and nanostructures, nanofabrication and the new forms of carbon. The second part present some applications in different areas as well as the issue of risks and toxicity of nanomaterials. The different areas of applications are health, food, nanoelectronics and molecular electronics, nanocatalysis, energy (production, housing and transport), defense and security. We also address the issue of risks and toxicity of nanomaterials. This book is not intended to be a comprehensive presentation of nanotechnology but just a flavor of this exciting area that will be more and more important for our future.
