Download or read book The Poetry of Luis Cernuda written by Neil Charles McKinlay and published by Tamesis. This book was released on 1999 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the work of the Spanish poet Luis Cernuda (1902-1963). The works of the twentieth-century Spanish poet Luis Cernuda (1902-1963) are characterised by their fragmentary and disunified nature, with a wide range of complexities and contradictions. Concentrating on the well-known La realidad y el deseo, Dr McKinlay considers the poems from the perspective of the widespread loss of faith in God, exploring the tension between Cernuda's perception of chaos and desire for order, which co-exist in dialectical opposition. NEIL C. MCKINLAY is college lecturer in Spanish at New College, Oxford.

Book excerpt: Books studying the presence of Spain in American literature, and the possible influence of Spain and its literature on American authors, are still rare. In 1955 appeared a pioneer work in this field – Stanley T. Williams’ The Spanish Background of American Literature. But that book went no further than W.D. Howells’ Familiar Spanish Travels, published in 1913. The Last Good Land covers most of the twentieth century, including such groups as the Lost Generation and African American writers and exiles. It also considers then recent revolution in Spanish cultural and historical thought introduced by Américo Castro, which several American writers discussed in this volume may be said to have anticipated. Recent studies have expanded on Williams’ volumes, but in the majority of cases these works limit their scope to a single period (the nineteenth century, the Spanish Civil War), a movement (predominantly Romanticism) or authors known for their interest in Spain (Irving, Hemingway). The result is often a lack of continuum, or the exclusion of such authors as Saul Bellow, William Gaddis or Richard Wright. Within American literature itself, The Last Good Land contains revisions of traditional interpretations of certain writers, including Hemingway. The variety of authors treated, both in respect to ethnicity and gender, guarantees a varied and global view of Spanish culture by American writers.
Book Synopsis Engaging the Emotions in Spanish Culture and History by : Luisa Elena Delgado
Download or read book Engaging the Emotions in Spanish Culture and History written by Luisa Elena Delgado and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than being properties of the individual self, emotions are socially produced and deployed in specific cultural contexts, as this collection documents with unusual richness. All the essays show emotions to be a form of thought and knowledge, and a major component of social life—including in the nineteenth century, which attempted to relegate them to a feminine intimate sphere. The collection ranges across topics such as eighteenth-century sensibility, nineteenth-century concerns with the transmission of emotions, early twentieth-century cinematic affect, and the contemporary mobilization of political emotions including those regarding nonstate national identities. The complexities and effects of emotions are explored in a variety of forms—political rhetoric, literature, personal letters, medical writing, cinema, graphic art, soap opera, journalism, popular music, digital media—with attention paid to broader European and transatlantic implications.
Book Synopsis Art, Gender, and Sexuality by : Philip Martin-Clark
Download or read book Art, Gender, and Sexuality written by Philip Martin-Clark and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study opens up new avenues of inquiry into the work of Luis Cernuda. It analyses the representation of aesthetics, gender, and sexuality in his last four books of poetry by drawing on work in aesthetics, feminism, gay/lesbian studies, and psychoanalysis. The central concern is to examine the terms in which Cernuda represents particular identities, including the poet's identity, masculinity, femininity, and male homosexuality. The study explores Cernuda's creation of a collective mythology of freedom to change contemporary Spanish culture and examines his many-sided portrayal of gender, including the potential of women's identity to disrupt masculinity. It also discusses male homosexuality through the lenses of perversion and self-shattering.

Book Synopsis Documenting Spain: Artists, Exhibition Culture, and the Modern Nation, 1929Ð1939 by :
Download or read book Documenting Spain: Artists, Exhibition Culture, and the Modern Nation, 1929Ð1939 written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The news media have given us potent demonstrations of the ambiguity of ostensibly truthful representations of public events. Jordana Mendelson uses this ambiguity as a framework for the study of Spanish visual culture from 1929 to 1939--a decade marked, on the one hand, by dictatorship, civil war, and Franco's rise to power and, on the other, by a surge in the production of documentaries of various types, from films and photographs to international exhibitions. Mendelson begins with an examination of El Pueblo Español, a model Spanish village featured at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. She then discusses Buñuel's and Dalí's documentary films, relating them not only to French Surrealism but also to issues of rural tradition in the formation of regional and national identities. Her highly original book concludes with a discussion of the 1937 Spanish Pavilion, where Picasso's famed painting of the Fascist bombing of a Basque town--Guernica--was exhibited along with monumental photomurals by Josep Renau. Based upon years of archival research, Mendelson's book opens a new perspective on the cultural politics of a turbulent era in modern Spain. It explores the little-known yet rich intersection between avant-garde artists and government institutions. It shows as well the surprising extent to which Spanish modernity was fashioned through dialogue between the seemingly opposed fields of urban and rural, fine art, and mass culture.
