Book excerpt: The most comprehensive book to date on the history of silicosis and the strategies used to combat it. Despite the common perception that “black lung” has been relegated to the dustbin of history, silicosis remains a crucial public health problem that threatens millions of people around the world. This painful and incurable chronic disease, still present in old industrial regions, is now expanding rapidly in emerging economies around the globe. Most industrial sectors—including the metallurgical, glassworking, foundry, stonecutting, building, and tunneling industries—expose their workers to lethal crystalline silica dust. Dental prosthodontists are also at risk, as are sandblasters, pencil factory workers in developing nations, and anyone who handles concentrated sand squirt to clean oil tanks, build ships, or fade blue jeans. In Silicosis, eleven experts argue that silicosis is more than one of the most pressing global health concerns today—it is an epidemic in the making. Essays explain how the understanding of the disease has been shaken by new medical findings and technologies, developments in industrializing countries, and the spread of the disease to a wide range of professions beyond coal mining. Examining the global reactions to silicosis, the authors trace the history of the disease and show how this occupational health hazard first came to be recognized as well as the steps that were necessary to deal with it at that time. Adopting a global perspective, Silicosis offers comparative insights into a variety of different medical and political strategies to combat silicosis. It also analyzes the importance of transnational processes—carried on by international organizations and NGOs and sparked by waves of migrant labor—which have been central to the history of silicosis since the early twentieth century. Ultimately, by bringing together historians and physicians from around the world, Silicosis pioneers a new collective method of writing the global history of disease. Aimed at legal and public health scholars, physicians, political economists, social scientists, historians, and all readers concerned by labor and civil society movements in the contemporary world, this book contains lessons that will be applicable not only to people working on combating silicosis but also to people examining other occupational diseases now and in the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a wonderful comic novel, about philosophy, the nature of art, the beauty of the ordinary, and about quirky, complete, night & day victims of obsessive–compulsive disorder. Two charming, over–anxious, germ–phobic friends, Isaac and Greg take a road trip from Boston to Philadelphia. They are both obsessed with Marcel Duchamp, his art and his ideas, and thus the destination has to be the largest collection of Duchamp in the world, The Philadelphia Art Museum, the actual place "The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even" was to be delivered when it was cracked and broken in shipment. The piece is sometimes known as The Large Glass, and today it sits in the middle of a large gallery proudly displayed in its broken state which Duchamp repaired and then certified had been his intention all along. The two men are driven in a rented disinfected Winnebago by Kelly, a beautiful art scholar who smells like a mixture of lemons and fresh sawdust. They intend to pick up an ancient chocolate grinder, an exact working sculptural copy of one used in a Duchamp painting. Isaac intends to grind his own pure chocolate, which will prevent the build–up or arterial plaque, because his mother died of a stroke. Every action has its own suitable reaction, and then some. Isaac hopes eventually to overcome his devotion to his many obsessions and to re–enter the world, evidently his version of the real world. He is not an unreliable narrator, he is a hyper–reliable narrator, consumed by his own attention and thrilled with the connections he sees everywhere all at once. Of course when he finally gets to the museum he must dress–up as a woman to visit the collection.

Book excerpt: A riveting and dramatic account of a battle to reach the top in sport and a warning that -- no matter how successful you are -- you never know what's around the corner. When Graeme Dott won the World Snooker Championship in 2006 it should have been the highlight of his career. But Alex Lambie, his mentor and father-in-law, had cancer and only had months to live. At the end of 2006 Alex died; incredibly Dott's snooker went from strength to strength, but away from the table things were a different story. Dott's wife Elaine suffered a cancer scare and despite being given the all-clear she lost the baby she was carrying. As things went from bad to worse Dott was unwittingly suffering with severe depression, and eventually he slipped down the rankings. In 2010, having faced his demons, he reached the final of the 2010 World Championship. In this inspirational autobiography Graeme talks for the first time about his depression and how he managed to turn his life around. He describes in detail growing up in one of the toughest parts of Glasgow, his snooker career and the role Alex Lambie played in making his dreams come true.

Book excerpt: The future is not a shiny beacon of hope and good times. The predictions of a glorious golden age with the development of star drives and a massive exodus of humanity to the stars and a frontier atmosphere were all false. Humanity was rocked by a brutal alien invasion that left a billion dead and many traumatized. The shock was made worse by the understanding that true intergalactic war as pictured in any sort of entertainment was not supposed to be possible. But it had happened. Now two generations later humanity is starting to reach for the stars again and is developing all those life changing technologies. Ron and his friends loved gaming. The VR world was something they knew well and when the first International Virtual Reality Competition was announced they desperately wanted to enter. Through a fluke and some good luck, they are not only enrolled but they have their VR room reserved at the local gaming centre. Now they just need to get ready for the best gaming of their lives! At least that was what they thought. They didn’t know that a high-level AI that had been programmed to find a solution on how to defend our solar system from another alien invasion was on the loose. All Ron and his friends want to do is enter the competition and do well. They don’t realize that the entire system is about to be hijacked and a rogue AI has its own agenda. What can go wrong in a thirty and sixty-minute gaming session in a VR world?
