Book excerpt: Handbook of Reagents for Organic Synthesis Reagents, Auxiliaries and Catalysts for C-C Bond Formation Robert M. Coates and Scott E. Denmark The University of Illinois, Urbana, USA Recognising the critical need for bringing a handy reference work that deals with the most popular reagents in synthesis to the laboratory of practising organic chemists, the Editors, of the acclaimed Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis (EROS) have selected the most important and useful reagents employed in contemporary organic synthesis. The Handbook of Reagents for Organic Synthesis; Reagents Auxiliaries and Catalysts for C-C Bond Formation, provides practical and concise information on a diverse group of reagents. To familiarise the user with the spectrum of reagents contained within this volume, the editors have subdivided more than 200 entries into 22 classes based on their chemical structures and function. The articles, arranged alphabetically, contain all of the information found in EROS as well as expanded reagents listings. In addition, new listings of recently published review articles and monographs are included, as well as relevant Organic Syntheses procedures that deal with either the preparations or reactions of the featured reagents. This comprehensive and well referenced handbook will prove of great value to all practitioners in the field of organic chemistry.

Book excerpt: Organozinc reagents are less reactive than Grignard reagents but they are much more chemoselective. Since the Negishi cross-coupling reaction developed by Ei-ichi Negishi, who was awarded the Nobel Price in chemistry in 2010, a number of cross-coupling reactions involving organozinc derivatives and transition metal catalysts (Pd, Ni, Fe, Co, Cu, ...) has been tuned up to form C-C bonds. This book on "Organozinc derivatives and transition metal catalysts" has been written by experts in the field and is a complement to the book entitled "Grignard reagents and transition metal catalysts" (a De Gruyter book, edited by J. Cossy). Grignard reagents or organozinc reagents, that is the question? From a given substrate, what is the best organometallic reagent and the best transition metal to form a C-C bond by using a cross-coupling reaction? The solution might be found in these two books.

Book excerpt: The efficient stereoselective formation of C-C and C-O bonds remains a critical challenge in organic chemistry. The level difficulty of these bond formations increases dramatically when regio-, diastereo-, and chemoselectivity issues are present. In efforts to address such challenges, this thesis summarizes three successful strategies to develop highly stereoselective C-C and C-O bond formation reactions: 1) the first strategy outlines the direct metallation and subsequent chemo- and regioselective cross-coupling of benzylic sp3-hybridized C-H bonds (pKa values >34) to form C- bonds via palladium catalyzed deprotonative cross-coupling process (DCCP), 2) the second strategy outlines the application of 1,1-heterobimetallic borozinc reagents in the diastereoselective C- bond-forming reactions, and 3) the third strategy outlines the use of transition metal-catalysis in the highly chemo- and diastereoselective C-O bond formation via vanadium catalyzed directed epoxidation. Chapters 1 and 2 summarize a program that we have recently initiated in our laboratory known as deprotonative cross-coupling process (DCCP). DCCP is the reversible in situ deprotonation of weakly acidic sp3-hybridized C-H bonds under mild conditions, which are then catalytically cross-coupled with aryl electrophiles under palladium catalysis. Chapters 3 and 4 summarize the potential usefulness of 1-alkenyl-l,l-heterobimetallics in the stereoselective C-C bond formations in organic synthesis. Our group reported a practical generation of 1,1-heterobimetallics from air-stable B(pin)-substituted alkynylboronate esters and demonstrated their utility in a variety of one-pot transformations to provide boron-substituted allylic alcohols, dienols, [alpha]-hydroxy ketones, and [alpha]-dihydroxy ketones with high diastereoselectivity. More applications of these reagents are also explored in Chapters 3 and 4.

Nowadays, many transition metal variants are developed to modify reactivity and selectivity of the C-C bond formation reaction. The Grignard reaction is one of the fundamental organometallic reactions, often used in alcohol syntheses. With transition metals like iron, cobalt and nickel or with noble metals like copper, silver and palladium, modern Grignard reagents can be designed in reactivity, selectivity and functional group tolerance. This book, written by international experts, presents an overview on timely Grignard chemistry involving transition metals.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the latest developments in new catalytic C–C bond formation methods using easily accessible carboxylate salts through catalytic decarboxylation with good atom economy, and employing the sustainable element iron as the catalyst to directly activate C–H bonds with high step efficiency. In this regard, it explores a mechanistic understanding of the newly discovered decarboxylative couplings and the catalytic reactivity of the iron catalyst with the help of density functional theory calculation. The thesis is divided into two parts, the first of which focuses on the development of a series of previously unexplored, inexpensive carboxylate salts as useful building blocks for the formation of various C–C bonds to access valuable chemicals. In turn, the second part is devoted to several new C–C bond formation methodologies using the most ubiquitous transition metal, iron, as a catalyst, and using the ubiquitous C–H bond as the coupling partner.

Book excerpt: The chemist has a vast range of high-tech catalysts to use when working in fine chemical synthesis but the catalysts are generally hard to use and require both time, skill and experience to handle properly. The Catalysts for Fine Chemical Synthesis series contains tested and validated procedures which provide a unique range resources for chemists who work in organic chemistry. "... of great value to synthetic organic chemists..." (The Chemists, Summer 2003) Volume 3 in the series focuses on catalysts for carbon-carbon bond formation and presents practical and detailed protocols on how to use sophisticated catalysts by the "inventors" and "developers" who created them. The combination of protocols and review commentaries helps the reader to easily and quickly understand and use the new high-tech catalysts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, research on the elaboration by palladium-catalytic processes of C-C bonds or the activation of C–H bonds has increased considerably. Yet there is still room for much improvement in terms of selectivity, or enantioselectivity, via the development of new ligands or the study of the catalytic effect of other metals to carry out the same chemical transformations. In addition, the attention paid to environmentally friendly methods in terms of the quantities of catalysts, ligands, and solvents is currently indispensable. The Mizoroki-Heck reaction is one of these important catalytic methods which generates C-C bonds in organic synthesis and is also possible by C-H activation. This book, titled “Catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck Reaction or C-H activation” focuses on new advances in the formation of C-C bonds or new C-H activation methods. It contains original research papers and short reviews on the synthesis of biologically active compounds using these catalytic processes, the identification of new catalysts, of new conditions allowing selectivity or enantioselectivity, the activity and stability of catalyst under turnover conditions, and all improvements in catalytic processes.
