Book excerpt: "From adjusted gross income to zoning and property taxes, the second edition of The Encyclopedia of Taxation and Tax Policy offers the best and most complete guide to taxes and tax-related issues. More than 150 tax practitioners and administrators, policymakers, and academics have contributed. The result is a unique and authoritative reference that examines virtually all tax instruments used by governments (individual income, corporate income, sales and value-added, property, estate and gift, franchise, poll, and many variants of these taxes), as well as characteristics of a good tax system, budgetary issues, and many current federal, state, local, and international tax policy issues. The new edition has been completely revised, with 40 new topics and 200 articles reflecting six years of legislative changes. Each essay provides the generalist with a quick and reliable introduction to many topics but also gives tax specialists the benefit of other experts' best thinking, in a manner that makes the complex understandable. Reference lists point the reader to additional sources of information for each topic. The first edition of The Encyclopedia of Taxation and Tax Policy was selected as an Outstanding Academic Book of the Year (1999) by Choice magazine."--Publisher's website.

Download or read book New York Residency and Allocation Audit Handbook (2014) written by Paul R. Comeau and published by . This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal income tax audits are a fact of life in many states. However, both New York State and New York City are particularly aggressive in pursuing this source of income, focusing mainly on questions of residency and non-resident income allocation. These audits can often be tremendously burdensome, even for those filing correctly. In this new edition of the New York Residency and Allocation Audit Handbook, noted tax practitioners Paul Comeau, Tim Noonan and Mark Klein provide an in-depth and practical look at New York's residency and income allocation audit programs. They include detailed, yet easy-to-read, information drawn from the current tax law and from their own experiences. This helpful book guides the reader through both the residency and the non-resident allocation audit process, starting with detailed descriptions of the residency and non-residency allocation "rules of the road" through practical advice on what to do when audited, how the audit will progress and techniques to use to help reduce the risk of an audit and minimize the problems. This publication also details civil penalties and interest, and the risk of criminal prosecution. Finally, the book explores the tax relationships between New York and other states, including a residency tax guide that summarizes the residency rules and requirements of the remaining states.

Book Synopsis How the Internal Revenue Service Selects Individual Income Tax Returns for Audit, Department of the Treasury by : United States. General Accounting Office
Download or read book How the Internal Revenue Service Selects Individual Income Tax Returns for Audit, Department of the Treasury written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GAO reviewed the process used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to select individual tax returns for audit. GAO found that most tax returns are selected for audit by a computer or a person other than the examiners who will audit them, and procedures generally protect the taxpayer against abuse. At district offices, most returns are selected because they have good audit potential. About 70 percent of returns audited by district offices are selected by a two-stage system. Returns are first scored as to their audit potential by a computer using sophisticated mathematical formulas. The highest scored returns are then manually screened to determine if an audit is warranted, and, in most cases, what items of income and deductions should be examined. Examiners can sometimes request returns for audit without having to explain why they need them. Overpayers are less likely to have their returns audited than those who underpay. Not enough is known about why taxpayers do or do not comply with the tax laws.
