But the practical problem of providing such readings for classes is by no means easy to solve. Those who have tried to procure the necessary number of copies of books, to discover English translations, to find applicable passages, and to make practicable requirements best know the difficulties of the task. I hope this book of readings from the original sources of English history will help to overcome these obstacles. It provides in easily accessible form a body of such material as large as can be actually utilized by most classes. It is intended to be used as a close companion to my Short History of England. The matter contained in it is arranged in the same order as the subjects taken up in the text-book, and is selected with a view to the further explanation and illustration of the principal points there discussed. It differs also from previous collections in drawing on a somewhat greater variety of historical material, and in being, it is believed, the result of a more extensive and prolonged search for suitable illustrative passages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of England In studying and teaching history I have been convinced of the desirability of making certain fundamental facts absolutely clear and familiar. An acquaintance with the physical and political geography of a country makes the events of its history seem real and natural; a knowledge of the race elements of a people gives the strongest impression of the continuity of its history; a study of the early political and ecclesiastical organization of a nation makes comprehensible later changes. I have therefore striven, in the first place, to give a full and clear description of early institutions and conditions. Secondly, I have tried to select from the mass of historical detail what was significant rather than what was merely conspicuous, - what either gave shape and character to a considerable period of history, or was a clearly marked step in the general development of the nation. Detached episodes and merely striking occurrences, especially those in the field of military history, have been hastened over in order that more attention might be given to the really great movements and influential men. Thirdly, I have clung pretty closely to the thread of English history, only introducing mention of other countries when their connection with England was especially close. Since England's story is so long and so eventful, I have felt that it had better here be told as simply, clearly, and continuously as possible, for its own sake, rather than to complicate it by including many facts drawn from the history of other countries. Book excerpt: History records only one peaceful transition of hegemonic power: the passage from British to American dominance of the international order. What made that transition uniquely cooperative and nonviolent? Does it offer lessons to guide policy as the United States faces its own challengers to the order it has enforced since the 1940s? To answer these questions, Kori Schake explores nine points of crisis or tension between Britain and the United States, from the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 to the establishment of the unequal “special relationship” during World War II. Over this period, Safe Passage shows, the United States gradually changed the rules that Britain had established at its imperial height. It was able to do so peacefully because, during the crucial years, Britain and the United States came to look alike to each other and different from other nations. Britain followed America’s lead in becoming more democratic, while the United States, because of its conquest of the American West, developed an imperial cast of mind. Until the end of World War II, both countries paid more attention to their cumulative power relative to other states in the order than to their individual power relative to each other. The factors that made the Anglo-American transition peaceful, notably the convergence in their domestic ideologies, are unlikely to apply in future transitions, Schake concludes. We are much more likely to see high-stake standoffs among competing powers attempting to shape the international order to reflect the starkly different ideologies that prevail at home.
