Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings From American Literature a Textbook for Schools and Colleges That this volume of "Readings from American Literature" was made because of a real need is, perhaps, its first and best excuse for being. The editors found in their own classrooms the demand for a compact anthology, ranging in time from colonial days to the present and adapted to the high-school student and the college undergraduate. Because of this they have essayed a task, not simple in itself, but simplified to a degree, in their case, by experience in teaching the material presented here. It is happily a fact that to-day we are not neglectful in the school curriculum of a historical survey of American literature. Better still, we link such study with history proper in a natural correlation that vitalizes both. But to read about an author is not enough; we must read his works - all of which is trite, but so true that it may be said safely many times. Not all schools are so fortunate as to have adequate and extensive reference shelves. Nor do home and town libraries meet all requirements. Few collections, however well selected, supply much material prior to Irving. And even when reference reading is practicable, the desirability of a text for classroom study is still obvious. With this by way of explanation, not apology, the editors are content. Thanks are gratefully extended to all who have helped to make the book - to the boys and girls whose frank expressions of interest or boredom have shown us what appeals to younger readers; to the fellow teachers who have advised from their experience; to the publishers who have made adequate selection possible. If there are any lingering regrets, and what compiler ever saw in his book a true compendium of his desires, it is that the number of selections could not be more generous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of American Literature: A Text-Book for Schools and Colleges HE systematic study of English Literature, as part of the course of ordinary English education, has been introduced almost entirely within' the last thirty years. The reader who will take the trouble to look over the old catalogues of our Colleges and Schools, will find no vestige of such a study prior to 1844. The Class Book of Poetry and the Class Book of Prose, issued in 1844, by the author of the present volume, were a feeble beginning in this line. Though intended primarily for reading-books, they were to some extent studies in literature. The selections from the various authors were in each case prefixed by a brief critical and biographical notice of the author, and were arranged in chronological order, so as to fumish the teacher and the scholar with something like an outline of the general eentse of English Literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading Courses in American Literature Frequent inquiries by members of reading circles, by college students, and others, for a systematic course of reading in the American Classics have led the author to the publication of the following pages, originally prepared for use with his elective courses. The value of systematic reading need not be dwelt upon, and the inability of the average reader to select his own path needs no comment. Subordinate to these authors are those less famous with whom all but the most superficial students should be acquainted, and who would necessarily be excluded in a briefer consideration of our literature. III. Authors' belonging to the literature of knowl edge, rather than to the literature of power, writers whose services must always be remembered in any complete history of literature, these, together with their works, are mentioned in the introductory paragraphs of each chapter. IV. English authors have been chronologically divided into six groups for the purpose of giving the student a clearer idea of what writers were contemporaneous, and, at the same time, effectively to present the movement dur ing each epoch. It is believed that the classification is a natural one, and that while doing no violence to similar and well-settled plans, it more exactly discriminates the periods of actual change in the literary spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in American Literature The present volume of selections is primarily intended to accompany a history of American literature. Biographical matter has therefore been omitted, and only such notes have been added as seem indispensable to a clear understanding of the text. After the Colonial and Revolutionary periods, the selections have been arranged in regional groups in accordance with the plan followed in most briefer histories of American literature. Book excerpt: American Literature (Excellence in Literature, English 3) cultivates competent readers and writers in a self-directed, classics-focused, one year, college-prep literature and composition course for co-op, classroom, or homeschool use. The award-winning Excellence in Literature curriculum, suitable for grades 8-12, presents a feast of great ideas by immersing students in great literature. Classics that have stood the test of time-rollicking adventures, compelling plays, engaging poetry-encourage students to enjoy literature study, rather than just endure it. Students will study and write about the following books: Autobiography by Benjamin Franklin Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving and selected works by Longfellow The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper The House of Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne Moby Dick by Herman Melville The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway How it works A four-week lesson plan guides the study of each unabridged classic, providing writing assignments and context resources - information on the author, relevant historical events, related art and music resources, etc.. To help students stay engaged, a variety of sources, voices, and formats have been carefully chosen as context resources, with links provided to those that are online. There are 9 4-week modules in each study guide for one school year of study. An optional Honors track adds additional reading and writing, including a research paper and an optional CLEP exam. The text is written directly to the student, and can be used independently or in a classroom. There is no separate teacher manual; all writing assignments, context resource links, and student/teacher helps are included in the Introduction to Literature study guide. Student helps - Week-by-week assignment schedule - Instructions and a student-written model for each type of paper assigned - A chapter on how to read and understand challenging literature - Overview of how to write an essay, from conception to revision - A curriculum website with supporting resources, including author biographies, art, music, related poetry, and writing helps. - Built-in time for both a rough and a final draft of each month's essay - Instructions for setting up a study area, English notebook, and study habits - A model essay that teaches and demonstrates MLA formatting - Glossary of literary terms Teacher helps - Week-by-week pacing chart with overview of reading and writing for the entire school year - Grading instructions and reproducible rubric - Suggestions for using in a co-op or classroom - A year-end Student Evaluation Summary to keep with student records Each student and teacher will need a copy of the study guide, plus a copy of each classic that is studied (short stories are linked online). There are specific book editions recommended, but students who already own a different edition may use that. It is also helpful to have access to a dictionary, thesaurus, and the Handbook for Writers (from Excellence in Literature).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature: With a View to the Fundamental Principles Underlying Its Development; A d104-Book for Schools and Colleges In the preparation of this history of the rise and development of American literature the author has had clearly in mind the limitations to which every textbook on literature must be subject. Such a work can be at best only directive. It can trace the influences of race, environment, and epoch, and indicate causes and results; it can insist that the student follow the logical order, rejecting everything not worthy of his attention and emphasizing sufficiently the emphatic points; it can furnish him with a plan for estimating the personality and influence of each individual author; but more it cannot do. No one ever learned literature from a text-book, not even when it was supplemented by copious extracts from the authors considered. Fragments of an author's writings, like fragments of any work of art, give only vague ideas of the whole. He who has studied merely "Thanatopsis" or "Evangeline" knows very little of Bryant or Longfellow. A knowledge of "Rip Van Winkle" provides the key to only a very small part of Irving's domain.
