It is ideally suited for courses in colleges and universities, for students or specialists in any discipline, and for independent learners. Drawing on recent research into reading in a foreign language, the course chapters focus on the recognition and decoding of progressively complex written structures, before rehearsing a variety of strategies (suchas skimming and scanning) for negotiating longer and more complex texts. The book has four sections: a 16-chapter reading course an extensive reference section containing a specially-designed grammar of written German a further exercises section, for further work on recognizing structures a text corpus containing 23 texts of various types, with facing English translations. Grammatical points explained in the reference section are frequently illustrated using examples located in the text corpus. The only other resource the user will need is a bilingual dictionary. Advice on how to use a dictionary is contained in the reference section.

Book excerpt: Why is it that more people can’t read and write? Why are there still so many vastly different methods of teaching literacy? Why do people still argue about it? Reading for Life examines these three questions, addressing the less evidence supported ideas about teaching reading and writing which are still alive and well in schools all over the world. This accessible guide bridges the gap between research and practice, translating academic findings into practical suggestions and ready-to-use techniques. Written in an approachable style and with informative graphics, vignettes and interviews woven throughout, this book covers: the components of literacy, including phonics, vocabulary and fluency the history of approaches to literacy teaching and an overview of the key figures government-level inquiries into the provision of reading and writing teaching the mindset which leads to acceptance of poor practice the essential components of an effective literacy program with practical advice on selecting resources to get the job done well Reading for Life helps educational practitioners make informed decisions about which teaching methods to reject and select, and empowers parents to ask the right questions of professionals and policy makers. This book is a timely exploration of poor teaching methods and is an innovative, fresh assessment of how high quality literacy teaching can be provided for all.

A systematic guide, the volume is a critical companion for university-level students learning to read and translate written French into English; for graduate scholars learning to do research in French or prepping for proficiency exams; and for any interested readers who want to improve their facility with the French language. In addition, A Short Course in Reading French exposes readers to a broad range of French texts from the humanities and social sciences, including writings by distinguished francophone authors from around the world. The book begins with French pronunciation and cognates and moves through nouns, articles, and prepositions; verbs, adjectives, and adverbs; a graduated presentation of all the indicative and subjunctive tenses; object, relative, and other pronouns; the passive voice; common idiomatic constructions; and other fundamental building blocks of the French language. Chapters contain translation passages from such authors as Pascal, Montesquieu, Proust, Sartre, Bourdieu, Senghor, Césaire, de Certeau, de Beauvoir, Barthes, and Kristeva. Drawn from more than two decades of experience teaching French to students from academic and nonacademic backgrounds, Celia Brickman's clear, accessible, and time-tested format enables even beginners to develop a sophisticated grasp of the language and become adept readers of French. Book excerpt: Israel Bond may seem like a simple-if-sexy salesman for Mother Margolies' Old World Chicken Soup, but when the Holy Land needs his skills - his quickness with a pun, his second-to-none semitic seduction techniques, and (if absolutely necessary) his abilities at actual espionage - then the man known by the code name Oy-Oy-7 (licensed not only to kill, but to say prayers over the corpse) is there to do what needs be done. In a land surrounded by its enemies, Oy-Oy-7 is called on to guard the nation's great benefactor, the generous but odd Lazarus Loxfinger. Is there more to Loxfinger than meets the eye? Bond aims to find out, even if doing so requires sleeping with dozens of exotic beauties! In the mid-1960s, when Playboy was serializing the adventures of the world's most famous superspy, they interspersed them with the rollicking adventures of Israel's most hilarious weapon, Israel Bond. After the book editions of what the Chicago Tribune called "probably the funniest secret agent parodies ever written" had sold over a million copies, they were allowed to fall out of print. Decades later, all four books in the Israel Bond series are now back in new editions!

Book excerpt: This book tells you a lot about speed reading and photography. You are in the privileged position from which you can continue to increase your reading speed while maintaining the same rate of comprehension of the text. The course is complex, but you can choose exactly those techniques that suit you best. All of these techniques can be reduced to two or three main techniques that you have seen work for you and those you can keep exploring and, why not, improving. Speed reading can be condensed into a single sentence, but that doesn't change the facts of the matter. If I want to go to the gym because I want to have a worked body and the trainer shows me the exercises I need to do in a session, that doesn't automatically mean I'll look good. It's one thing to learn technique in a few minutes and another to exercise every day. You need willpower, discipline and determination to repeat the basic exercises daily. Without constant effort you cannot achieve results. If you go to the gym three times a week then you start to form a habit, and this habit helps you to live in the culture of sport. Being connected to the information in that sport and being able to generate so much enthusiasm that it counteracts your desire to give up the fight and return to your comfort zone. That's why I wrote about speed reading, to start living in the culture of this wonderful field. You have speed reading on your side. With it, you can get to break the 1000 words per minute barrier. That means you'll be able to read four times faster than the average person with the same or even better comprehension of the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you forget too quickly and too easily important things, fundamental information, and this negatively affects your personal and professional performance, this forgetfulness becomes a problem for your development. If you don't have a trained memory or if you haven't mastered speed-reading techniques very well then all is not lost. This book can help you for the next period but also for your whole life from now on. You are the most qualified person who knows, or needs to know, what you are doing with your life, where you are going and what your goals are for the future. Think of yourself right now, at this moment, as the sum of the investments you have made over time up to the present moment. Whether you are happy or not, you have yourself to congratulate or to blame. If you know what you want, then you will continue to invest in your future. If you're uncertain, then you'll indulge in commonality and mediocrity. If you've failed to perform so far, or if you have but feel you can and deserve to do better, then your answer is speed reading. Just understand that speed reading is only your first step to success. Speed reading teaches you what to read and how to read. You need to give speed reading a chance. Don't start off sceptically, thinking that speed readers are just charlatans, because you've got certain benchmarks, milestones to guide you. I've succeeded in this area and you certainly will too. I have overcome my condition as a mediocre student, then you will succeed in doing the same. You are no different from successful people. We all have the same huge potential. Thanks to the activation of this potential, we can read quickly and increase our personal value permanently. What I'm suggesting to you through speed reading is to accumulate assets that bring you residual income, extra energy and residual time that you can reinvest. What I propose is that you invest resources in speed reading and brilliance. When you are a genius person, then whatever comes into your life, you will be able to find solutions, opportunities to evolve and embrace new life principles. The first benefit of speed reading is improved memory. The weaker your memory, the more information gaps there will be, and these gaps will decrease your personal performance. You are a sum of memories. If tomorrow you start forgetting important things then your life will never be the same. Memory is not a quality you were born with and don't have to do anything for. Memory is a medium to long term investment and depending on the capital you choose to invest you will get results. If you take it seriously from high school and then train your memory during college, and when you finish college you don't hang your degree on a nail but continue the training then you are already a successful person. This course will only answer a number of questions and confirm what you already know.
