Soto replaces that paradigm with a less didactic, more flexible framework geared for a queer analysis of the discursive relationship between racialization and sexuality. Through rereadings of a diverse range of widely discussed writers—from Américo Paredes to Cherríe Moraga—Soto demonstrates that representations of racialization actually depend on the sexual and that a racialized sexuality is a heretofore unrecognized organizing principle of Chican@ literature, even in the most unlikely texts. Soto gives us a broader and deeper engagement with Chican@ representations of racialization, desire, and both inter- and intracultural social relations. While several scholars have begun to take sexuality seriously by invoking the rich terrain of contemporary Chicana feminist literature for its portrayal of culturally specific and historically laden gender and sexual frameworks, as well as for its imaginative transgressions against them, this is the first study to theorize racialized sexuality as pervasive to and enabling of the canon of Chican@ literature. Exemplifying the broad usefulness of queer theory by extending its critical tools and anti-heteronormative insights to racialization, Soto stages a crucial intervention amid a certain loss of optimism that circulates both as a fear that queer theory was a fad whose time has passed, and that queer theory is incapable of offering an incisive, politically grounded analysis in and of the current historical moment.

Book excerpt: Reading, Pleasure, Play and The Art of Gay Chicano Literature aims to bring pleasure and play into the conversation taking place in gay Chicano literary studies in a sustained way. This study begins by considering the pros and cons of a critical framework built around pleasure and play through an examination of what queer theorists and Chicana/o literary scholars have said about pleasure and play over the last twenty-five years. These sections consider how pleasure and play can be co-opted by neoliberal ideology while also considering how pleasure and play can push back against neoliberal forms of life, especially those forms characterized by individualism and privatization. After discussing the pros and cons of pleasure and play from a queer (of color) perspective, this study proceeds to make a case for reading gay Chicano literature in ways that are pleasurable and playful. Drawing on the work of French literary critic Roland Barthes and that of queer theorist Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, this section demonstrates how taking pleasure in the act of literary interpretation can provide a vital form of nourishment and sustenance much needed by individuals like gay Chicanos who face multiple forms of oppression while navigating the world. This section also shows how turning to pleasure can help reinvigorate gay Chicano literary studies, which has maintained for too long that focusing on pain and mourning is the best way to challenge and eliminate forces like homophobia and racism. Reading, Pleasure, Play then goes on to offer readings of three gay Chicano texts--City of Night (1963) by John Francisco Rechy; Hunger of Memory (1983) by Richard Rodriguez; and The Rain God (1984) by Arturo Islas. These readings demonstrate what it looks like to read gay Chicano literature in pleasurable and playful ways and show further what we stand to gain from re-centering our interpretive practices around pleasure.

Yet queer work tackles problems that IR scholars themselves believe are central to their discipline: questions about political economies, the geopolitics of war and terror, and the national manifestations of sexual, racial, and gendered hierarchies, not to mention their implications for empire, globalization, neoliberalism, sovereignty, and terrorism. The year 1848 saw both the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the U.S. Mexican War and the year of the Seneca Falls Convention, the first organized conference on women’s rights in the United States. These concurrent events signaled new ways of thinking about U.S. citizenship, and placing these historical moments into conversation with the archive of Mexican American print culture, Varon offers an expanded temporal frame for Mexican Americans as long-standing participants in U.S. national projects. Pulling from a wide-variety of familiar and lesser-known works—from fiction and newspapers to government documents, images, and travelogues—Varon illustrates how Mexican Americans during this period envisioned themselves as U.S. citizens through cultural depictions of manhood.
