Book Synopsis The Three R's Plus by : Robert Holmes Beck
Download or read book The Three R's Plus written by Robert Holmes Beck and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1956-01-01 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Three R's Plus was first published in 1956. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Do the schools still teach the three R's or are they neglecting these fundamentals? Should boys and girls be made to study things that don't interest them? What's happened to the report card? Have drill and memorization a place in today's teaching methods? What are the basic ideas behind modern education? Questions like these are constantly being asked by parents and other responsible citizens in a sincere effort to learn more about what the public schools are doing and why. Such questions deserve thoughtful and thorough answers that will provide a basis for realistic understanding and constructive thinking about present-day schools. In this book, educators themselves explain, in understandable terms, the concepts, the methods, and the aims that underlie our public school teaching today. Thirty-one experts contribute chapters about their particular fields. The chapters are arranged in sections on Changed and Changing Conceptions, Subjects and Services, and Issues and Interest. The book explains modern educational philosophy and describes the methods of teaching, as applied to specific subject fields, that are based on these theories. The final section discusses such controversial problems as the financial support of the schools and the role of religion in the public school. The majority of the contributors are members of the faculty of the University of Minnesota but among the authors are included also several administrators in the Minneapolis and St. Paul public school systems.

Book Synopsis Young Adult Science Fiction by : C. W. Sullivan III
Download or read book Young Adult Science Fiction written by C. W. Sullivan III and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-03-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the close of the nineteenth century, American youths developed a growing interest in electricity and its applications, machines, and gadgetry. When authors and publishers recognized the extent of this interest in technology, they sought to create reading materials that would meet this market need. The result was science fiction written especially for young adults. While critics tended to neglect young adult science fiction for decades, they gradually came to recognize its practical and cultural value. Science fiction inspired many young adults to study science and engineering and helped foster technological innovation. At the same time, these works also explored cultural and social concerns more commonly associated with serious literature. Nor was young adult science fiction a peculiarly American phenomenon: authors in other countries likewise wrote science fiction for young adult readers. This book examines young adult science fiction in the U.S. and several other countries and explores issues central to the genre. The first part of the book treats the larger contexts of young adult science fiction and includes chapters on its history and development. Included are discussions of science fiction for young adults in the U.S. and in Canada, Great Britain, Germany, and Australia. These chapters are written by expert contributors and chart the history of young adult science fiction from the nineteenth century to the present. The second section of the book considers topics of special interest to young adult science fiction. Some of the chapters look at particular forms and expressions of science fiction, such as films and comic books. Others treat particular topics, such as the portrayal of women in Robert Heinlein's works and representations of war in young adult science fiction. Yet another chapter studies the young adult science fiction novel as a coming-of-age story and thus helps distinguish the genre from science fiction written for adult readers. All chapters reflect current research, and the volume concludes with extensive bibliographies.

This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undoubtedly growing up during the Vietnam War, water gate and gas shortages can have a profound effect on a child. Also being the son of immigrant parents most certainly can lead to a traumatizing clash of cultures and the understanding of right and wrong. With that being said the Remington Company gave me the honor of a lifetime by letting me express my thoughts in unison with telling the brilliant stories of professionals around the world. As I wrote endlessly 24 hours a day I realized that our world is full of hope and real promise. I realized that it wasnt about war, ideology and the pursuit of global domination. I realized that in the pages of this great book great things were about to happen if only these stories can be made public. I realized that I had the opportunity of a lifetime by expressing the Humanitarian attributes that these professionals continually made. After many years of writing I realized that the Remington Company had a distinct and noble purpose and perhaps we could not change the present but we could certainly try to change our future. With that we created our Mentorship Program which gets these prolific stories out to the children. We wrote the stories with zest but never crossed the line of respect or dignity. We wished to capture the hearts of our audience and prove to them that giving was not an option but more so our duty as life forms on our planet. Today our book has a theme Inspiring the youth of America. This theme was our way of telling the world Lets hold hands and prepare our children for a better life. today I continue to write for the Registry. My life has irrevocably changed for the better. I volunteer for any thing all the time. I enjoy moments of quiet and the appreciation of our environment. I read these biographies in amazement as everyone else does and it never seems to get uneventful. Either way I sincerely hope you enjoy these biographies and use them to strengthen your spirit and confidence about our existence as a species on this planet. I patiently wait for divine intervention in order to write my next biography and am happy to serve the brilliant members of the Remington Registry of Outstanding Professionals.
