Book excerpt: Otis Redding's classic song "Respect"--as popularized by Aretha Franklin--becomes an empowering picture book exploring the concept of mutual respect through the eyes of a young girl. "[Respect's] art, by Rachel Moss, a Jamaican illustrator fueled by the energy of the Caribbean, will make readers want to amp up the music and dance, which perhaps is exactly what all of us need right now." --New York Times Book Review R-E-S-P-E-C-T / Find out what it means to me R-E-S-P-E-C-T / Take care, TCB Oh (sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me) A little respect Respect is a children's picture book based on lyrics written and originally recorded by Otis Redding in 1965. Aretha Franklin's iconic rendition of the song later peaked at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1967. Redding's lyrics continue to resonate with listeners today. With lyrics by Otis Redding and illustrations by Rachel Moss, this irresistible book shows a young girl, her brother, and her parents conjuring as many positive futures for each other as they can dream. Packed with playful vignettes as they imagine a life full of possibility, Respect provides families an opportunity to explore themes of mutual respect--while revisiting one of the greatest songs ever written. The Otis Redding Foundation. Redding was dedicated to improving the quality of life for his community through the education and empowerment of its youth. He provided scholarships and summer music programs which continued until his untimely death on December 10, 1967. Today, the mission of the Otis Redding Foundation, established in 2007 by Mrs. Zelma Redding, is to empower, enrich, and motivate all young people through programs involving music, writing, and instrumentation. Book excerpt: In too many American schools, each day brings the possibility of violence when students, teachers, or parents may be harassed, threatened, assaulted, or even killed. The Days of Respect program, developed by an experienced teacher and the Oakland Men's Project, speaks directly to young people's immediate need for recognition, participation, and respect. It brings students, teachers, administrators, parents, and members of the community together to create a schoolwide event on the theme of violence prevention. A part of the Making the Peace program, Days of Respect can be used as a follow-up or precursor to implementing the core curriculum -- or as a completely independent project. Its main purpose is to promote everyone's integrity, safety, and well-being so that the classroom environment can flourish. With this hands-on organizer's manual, all the tools and information needed to run an exciting and inspiring Days of Respect program are at your fingertips. Drawing on successful presentations in several schools, it includes ready-to-use outlines, timelines, handouts, agendas, training exercises, a guide for media outreach, as well as step-by-step instructions for staging the event -- from presenting the idea to parents and administrators, to conducting planning meetings and facilitation groups, to establishing ongoing campaigns in which students, teachers, and parents continue working together. By implementing this invaluable program and cultivating a schoolwide commitment to respectful behavior, the long, difficult process of resolving interpersonal conflicts, embracing individual differences, and making the peace can begin at least. Book excerpt: This program, co-authored by a woman and a man, seeks to bring gender issues to the threshing floor. It is an opportunity to explore such issues in a structured and non-adversarial context. Recognizing that gender is a social construct, Owen-Towle and Riddle intend their bridge building as a project that can be undertaken anywhere women and men must work together -- in romantic as well as nonromantic relationships, among transgendered individuals, in religious communities and in the workplace. The Chapter Laving the Foundations provides 31 exercises with incisive questions and writing activities. A full sample schedule of an intensive weekend workshop is given, with helpful hints, ground rules, readings and exercises.

Book excerpt: Childhood is the time for virtues to be taught—or, more accurately, “caught.” And the virtue of respect is one sorely needed in a world more and more diverse, congested, and interdependent. Just what is respect? “It’s a good way to be—and a way to be good,” say the authors of this helpful, yet entertaining children’s book. “It’s a way to care about others, ourselves, and our world. When we have the virtue of respect, we try to treat people and our whole world with extra love and kindness.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food studies, once trendy, has settled into the public arena. In the academy, scholarship on food and literary culture constitutes a growing river within literary and cultural studies, but writing on African American food and dining remains a tributary. Recipes for Respect bridges this gap, illuminating the role of foodways in African American culture as well as the contributions of Black cooks and chefs to what has been considered the mainstream. Beginning in the early nineteenth century and continuing nearly to the present day, African Americans have often been stereotyped as illiterate kitchen geniuses. Rafia Zafar addresses this error, highlighting the long history of accomplished African Americans within our culinary traditions, as well as the literary and entrepreneurial strategies for civil rights and respectability woven into the written records of dining, cooking, and serving. Whether revealed in cookbooks or fiction, memoirs or hotel-keeping manuals, agricultural extension bulletins or library collections, foodways knowledge sustained Black strategies for self-reliance and dignity, the preservation of historical memory, and civil rights and social mobility. If, to follow Mary Douglas’s dictum, food is a field of action—that is, a venue for social intimacy, exchange, or aggression—African American writing about foodways constitutes an underappreciated critique of the racialized social and intellectual spaces of the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we rely solely on statistics when we judge what is true and just? This book takes a holistic approach to addressing this question. It considers the legal trial as its paradigmatic case study before analysing a wide range of different cases, including profiling, the use of algorithms to predict students' grades, and the authorisation of automated cars. The book suggests that when we make judgements about the truth or about justice, approximations are not good enough. Truth and justice are uncompromising. They must be so, because the value that underlies them both is respect; and respect takes no compromise. Thus, in the search for truth as in the search for justice, a body of evidence that imposes a statistical compromise will not do. Only evidence that in principle allows reaching the truth and doing justice is good evidence. Once such evidence has been traced, the burden is on us to make good use of the evidence and reach truth and justice. We might or might not succeed, but once we have done our best on evidence that allows success, our judgements are justified; and as such, they can resolve conflicts over the truth and over justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the nature and scope of the provision requiring States to ‘ensure respect’ for international humanitarian law (IHL) contained within Common Article 1 of the 1949 Geneva Conventions. It examines the interpretation and application of this provision in a range of contexts, both thematic and country-specific. Accepting the clearly articulated notion of ‘respect’ for IHL, it builds on the existing literature studying the meaning of ‘ensure respect’ and outlines an understanding of the concept in situations such as enacting implementing legislation, diplomatic interactions, regulating private actors, targeting, detaining persons under IHL in non-international armed conflict, protecting civilians (including internally displaced populations) and prosecuting war crimes. It also considers topical issues such as counter-terrorism and foreign fighting. The book will be a valuable resource for practitioners, academics and researchers. It provides much needed practical reflection for States as to what ensuring respect entails, so that governments are able to address these obligations.
