The Rational (1) The rational judgment is that which is consistent, grounded and objective, the first two characters being the test of the third. (2) The search for grounds leads up to immediate judgments both particular and general. Particular immediate judgments, however, are not indubitably true, but are corroborated by interconnexion. (3) Immediate general judgments likewise require interconnexion. (4) Interconnectedness is in fact the rational basis of belief. (5) The grounds on which interconnexion rests are universal relations. (6) The principles of interconnexion rest on the consilience of all consistent acts of inference. (7) The rational in cognition is then the effort to attain truth by the persistent interconnexion of judgments through universal relations. Chapter IV The Good (1) Is there any reason in the choice of ultimate ends, i.e. is there a Rational Good? (2) Generically the Good appears as a harmony (mutual support) of feeling and effort, (3) or of feeling and passive experience including, e.g., observation of the behaviour of another. Generically pleasure is feeling in harmony and pain in disharmony. (4) The fact asserted by the judgment "This is Good" is thus a relation between an experience and a feeling. Either element may be called good as pertaining to the whole. Chapter V The Rational Good (1) The Rational Good must be a consistent scheme of purposes interconnected by universal relations in which subjective disturbance is eliminated, (2) This involves a dual harmony of feeling with feeling and of feeling with experience. (3) There may be internal consistency from a more partial point of view but rationality involves universalism, i.e. a system comprehending the whole world of all minds in a single scheme. He investigates the metaphysical presuppositions built into the reductive method, seeking to ascertain what the world must be like in order that the method could work.Corry argues that the method assumes the existence of causal powers that manifest causal influence- - a relatively unrecognised ontological category, of which forces are a paradigm example. The success of the reductive method, therefore, is an argument for the existence of such causal influences.The book goes on to show that adding causal influence to our ontology gives us the resources to solve some traditional problems in the metaphysics of causal powers, laws of nature, causation, emergence, and possibly even normative ethics. What is knowledge, Theaetetus responds with instances of knowledge: Then I think the things one can learn from Theodorus are knowledge - geometry and all the sciences you mentioned just now; and then there are the crafts of the cobbler and other workmen. Each and all of these are knowledge and nothing else. ' Yet a mere enumeration of particulars does not satisfy Socrates.

More specifically, I am going to discuss whether it is plausible to believe that affect subjugates rationality. My goal is to show that it indeed is credible to believe that there is necessarily a dependency between affect and rationality. To argue for this, I will proceed as follows: First, I will give an overview on Barrett’s emotion-theory in chapter two. Then, I will concentrate on the term 'affect' in chapter three. I will dis-cuss what affect means, where Barrett places it in her theory and what consequences we (may) derive from it. For these two parts I will focus on the fourth chapter ("The Origin of Feeling") of her book "How Emotions Are Made" (2018) because she outlines the main idea of her proposal here. Accordingly, the first part of this paper is mainly reconstructive and about identifying the underlying beliefs that lead Barrett to her assumptions. Outlining the consequences of affect will lead over to the critical approach to Barrett’s claims: In this step, I will explain why and how affect’s consequences connect to a person’s capability of rationality. To discuss the plausibility of the made assumptions I will attend to the model homo economicus in chapter four and five. Thereby I will focus on the definition(s) of rationality used in connection with this model and discuss the model in context with Barrett's theory. I chose homo economicus because Barrett herself argues against it. I am also interested in examining homo economicus because I want to know whether Barrett is justified in rejecting the model. Finally, I will draw a conclusion based on the acquired information in this paper in chapter six. In this conclusion I will elaborate whether I was successful in arguing for the plausibility of a necessary dependency between affect and rationality.

Contemporary efforts to address these questions are often motivated by the worry that our ordinary conception of rationality contains a kernel of supernaturalism—a ghostly presence that meditates on sensory messages and orchestrates behavior on the basis of its ethereal calculations. In shunning this otherworldly conception, contemporary philosophers have focused on the project of “naturalizing” the mind, viewing it as a kind of machine that converts sensory input and bodily impulse into thought and action. Eric Marcus rejects this choice between physicalism and supernaturalism as false and defends a third way. He argues that philosophers have failed to take seriously the idea that rational explanations postulate a distinctive sort of causation—rational causation. Rational explanations do not reveal the same sorts of causal connections that explanations in the natural sciences do. Rather, rational causation draws on the theoretical and practical inferential abilities of human beings. Marcus defends this position against a wide array of physicalist arguments that have captivated philosophers of mind for decades. Along the way he provides novel views on, for example, the difference between rational and nonrational animals and the distinction between states and events.
