Book excerpt: Do you ever feel like the world is losing its collective mind?Ever wonder why there's so much depression and anxiety? What if this wasn't the first time you lived this reality? As the level of world-wide psychosis continues to escalate without explanation, Marshall Beiner and his group of high-functioning autistic friends discover they remember certain past events differently than everyone else. Pursuing the mystery, they learn the fabric of space-time is somehow being artificially manipulated and changed. After watching a brutal murder connected to the phenomenon, Marshall makes contact with a "Time Sculptor" named Sixtus Maras, who reveals that agents populate history and make small adjustments in the timeline for the benefit of the ruling elites in the future. When Marshall explains that these changes are creating infinite multiple realities buried in the subconscious that eventually drive people to insanity, Sixtus knows they must determine where a massive time change event is going to take place. Even if they find its location, should they intervene or allow it to play out? They know all too well that the wrong decision carries catastrophic consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how an understanding of the nature and role of insanity in Hegel's writing provides intriguing new points of access to many of the central themes of his larger philosophic project. Berthold-Bond situates Hegel's theory of madness within the history of psychiatric practice during the great reform period at the turn of the eighteenth century, and shows how Hegel developed a middle path between the stridently opposed camps of "empirical" and "romantic" medicine, and of "somatic" and "psychical" practitioners. A key point of the book is to show that Hegel does not conceive of madness and health as strictly opposing states, but as kindred phenomena sharing many of the same underlying mental structures and strategies, so that the ontologies of insanity and rationality involve a mutually illuminating, mirroring relation. Hegel's theory is tested against the critiques of the institution of psychiatry and the very concept of madness by such influential twentieth-century authors as Michel Foucault and Thomas Szasz, and defended as offering a genuinely reconciling position in the contemporary debate between the "social labeling" and "medical" models of mental illness.

However, recent events and developments forcefully demonstrate that mental health professionals can no longer ignore the possibility that people can make a rational decision to die. After introducing the concept of rational suicide, the book explores the changing views of suicide over the centuries. Common arguments against rational suicide are examined and rebutted.

Book excerpt: Market Insanity: A Brief Guide to Diagnosing the Madness in the Stock Market is an engaging and accessible primer which applies modern behavioral finance to equity markets. It helps readers understand how logical investment decisions can be betrayed by what Taillard calls "the insanity," all those behavioral quirks which cause us to achieve less than optimal utility. The book describes how limited information, habit, the rules of the game, asymmetric information and ego blend together in potentially toxic ways in market environments, thus creating bubbles, stock runs, and more prosaically, even ‘normal’ equity prices. In addition, the book discusses the implications of these behaviors in-depth. In so doing, it helps the reader to not only predict the madness within equity markets, but also helps them develop solutions that address and mitigate outcomes. Provides detailed and accurate descriptions of the most relevant behavioral anomalies for finance Entertainingly written by a veteran consultant with 15+ years experience helping companies explain anomalous finance behavior in non-economic language Shows how educated finance professionals can use behavioral insights to help build finance solutions Addresses the implications for equity markets in deviations from rationality paradigms Draws on a vast range of literature in explaining anomalous behavior, including economic psychology, economic psychology, evolutionary psychology, anthropology and animal behavior

Values erode, conflicts deepen, and society is desensitized to the brutal and relentless suffering of others. On both a global and personal basis, we know it's true, but nothing can be done to stop it. How did it come to this? After an unsuccessful suicide attempt, Zach Randall, a self-absorbed accountant, begins to experience disturbing visions of other people in the act of taking their own lives. Initially dismissing the incidents as mere hallucinations, he slowly begins to suspect there is meaning hidden within each episode. Struggling in the midst of the most recent punishing vision, Zach is able to see a name and address on a discarded envelop close to the latest dying wretch. After enlisting the aid of his friend and support group leader, Jarad Anston, Randall discovers that the people in his visions are real, and he is voyeur who watches their last moments on earth. Certain that the visions are mirroring reality, Randall tries desperately to find more information as he is drawn into the grey mists of illusion, hoping that he might somehow intervene and save a doomed soul. However, there is an unexpected episodic encounter with someone-no something-that has its own horrific designs on those about to commit the final act. A detective in Seattle, a couple street-wise cops in Chicago and Zach Randall begin to put the pieces together to reveal a conspiracy of supernatural horror that will threaten the foundation of humanity. At its source is the ultimate evil; a malevolence that defies explanation. A Horror Thriller! The Suicide Society evolves as a story of pain, manipulation and a carefully devised plan to infiltrate every aspect of society for the purpose of promoting hate, chaos and ultimate destruction. Randall and his associates race to expose the forces that relentlessly drive the world closer to a global catastrophe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How often is the defense of insanity or temporary insanity for accused criminals valid—or is it ever legitimate? This unique work presents multidisciplinary viewpoints that explain, support, and critique the insanity defense as it stands. What is the role of "the insanity defense" as a legal excuse? How does U.S. law handle criminal trials where the defendant pleads insanity, and how does our legal system's treatment differ from those of other countries or cultures? How are insanity defenses used, and how successful are these defenses for the accused? What are the costs of incarceration versus psychiatric treatment and confinement? This book presents a range of expert viewpoints on the insanity defense, exposing common myths; investigating its effectiveness and place in our legal system through history, case studies, and comparative analysis; and supplying perspectives from the disciplines of psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and neuroscience. The content also addresses the ramifications of declaring citizens insane or incapacitated and examines trials that involved pleas of insanity and temporary insanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "RM covers many ontologies. AO is merely the first. RM is a method for creating understandings. AO is a "Unified Field Theory" or "Theory of Everything". First I had to resolve the true nature of reality itself. That became my "RM:AO". But to know the construct of reality is insufficient in itself. The normal state of reality is entropy, and it takes a special effort to prevent anything from being merely churned up and lost through time. That has been the focus of religion for thousands of years and the whole purpose of their rituals and morals. They have been fighting entropy. Once I knew how reality functions, the task became one of what to do about it: "How could people be saved from natural entropy, especially in a world so passionately lusting for change?" What I came to call, "Social Anentropic Molecularisation (SAM)" was my answer to that question." James S. Saint, June 2014

Swedberg examines how conceptions of mental illness intersected with American society, law, and politics during the early American Republic. Swedberg illustrates how concerns about insanity raised difficult questions about the nature of governance. Revolutionaries built the American government based on rational principles, but could not protect it from irrational actors that they feared could cause the body politic to grow mentally or physically ill. This book is recommended for students and scholars of history, political science, legal studies, sociology, literature, psychology, and public health.

Book excerpt: This book challenges the validity of all traditional theories of psychopathology, particularly with regard to schizophrenia. It demonstrates that the accepted belief that schizophrenia is a brain disease is wrong, a result of the inability of traditional theories to provide an alternative explanation for the correlation between schizophrenia and genetic/neurological impairments.Psych-Bizarreness Theory (PBT), presented in this book, demonstrates that bizarre/mad behaviors, schizophrenia, criminal insanity and neuroses are rational coping mechanisms to extreme levels of emotional distress, usually depression, which are chosen by the individual to improve his quality of life. PBT integrates the scientific contributions of all traditional theories into one theoretical framework. It also integrates all therapeutic interventions of mad behaviors into one theoretical umbrella and suggests a new, humanistic therapeutic approach.
