Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Changes in Channel-Stored Sediment, Redwood Creek, California Historically, geomorphologists have studied both hillslope erosion processes and sediment transport in rivers, but few studies have quantified a link between these two areas the storage component of channels. Channels may temporarily store sediment derived from hillslope erosion before transporting it out of the system. The quantity of sediment and its residence time varies with the type of system. Streams in steep mountainous terrain store little sediment for relatively brief periods of time, whereas rivers in broad alluvial valleys store vast quantities of sediment in their floodplains for thousands of years. As a result, channel storage may modify the effects of hillslope erosion on sediment yield measurements made at a point downstream. Thus sediment yield measurements may not truly reflect current rates of hillslope erosion in a watershed. Nevertheless, changes in sediment yield are often used to detect changes in rates of hillslope erosion due to land use modifications. In basins where channels store a significant portion of sediment in transport, it is not valid to assume a constant relation between hillslope erosion and sediment yield because the amount of alluvial storage can change in response to modifications in a watershed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inventory of Published and Unpublished Sediment-Load Data in the United States The need for an inventory of published and unpublished sediment load data on streams in the United States has long been recognized by engineers, hydrologists, and conservationists concerned with the control and beneficial utilization of the Nation's water resources. Expansion of Federal programs of flood control, water-power development, reclama tion, soil conservation, navigation, and water supply during the past two decades has made such a need more urgent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Distribution of Suspended-Sediment Concentrations and Velocities in the Washita River: A Data Summary Figure 1 shows the locations of the five gaging sites on the Washita River where data were collected. At two sites, Anadarko and Alex, data collection was repeated at different flow rates. Selecting when and what flows to sample and measure was largely arbitrary. The only criteria were that the flow rate be sizable so that the sediment-transport rate would be significant and that the data be collected on or after hydrograph peaks to minimize the change in discharge (and velocity) and sediment concentrations during the data-collection period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effects of Sediment on Aquatic Life Primary production can be a nuisance when it is in the form of algal blooms which are unsightly or cause taste and odor problems in drinking water. Suspended sediment can limit or prevent such blooms by reducing light penetra tion and adsorbing nutrients, such as phosphorous, which stimulate plant growth Such blooms might occur in many bodies of water in Illinois if suspended.
