Book Synopsis Rare or Threatened Australian Plants by : JD Briggs
Download or read book Rare or Threatened Australian Plants written by JD Briggs and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rare or Threatened Australian Plants (ROTAP) list and associated coding system was developed and has been maintained by CSIRO since 1979, and lists taxa that are Presumed Extinct, Endangered, Vulnerable, Rare or Poorly Known at the national level. This edition provides the most up-to-date list for conservation purposes. A significant number of endangered and Vulnerable taxa are included, which have not yet been considered for inclusion on either the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council list or the Commonwealth's Schedule 1. This is the first ROTAP publication to include subspecies and varieties, and the list now includes 5031 taxa. There have also been at least 3270 amendments to data for listed taxa. A total of 2012 additional records of regional data for tax already listed has been included. A key factor in the development of public opinion, and the design of effective management schemes, lies in the production of accurate data to tell the story. What is threatened? Where is it found? These are two of the most fundamental questions to answer before any strategic plans can be drawn up. Obtaining such apparently simple statistics is a huge task. Rare or Threatened Australian Plants is therefore an important reference for the national status of threatened species, particularly for Rare and Poorly Known species.

Book Synopsis Rare and Threatened Plants of South Eastern Queensland by : Lui Weber
Download or read book Rare and Threatened Plants of South Eastern Queensland written by Lui Weber and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive guide to the rare and threatened plants of South Eastern Queensland Australia. Three hundred and Thirty Two (332) Species are profiled and illistrated. This book is a must for anyone working in plant conservation in Eastern Australia. Some of the species are illustrated for the first time and this is the only book currently availble that details conservation significant flora in South Eastern Queensland.A decade in the making, to capture images for this book, Lui climbed many of the mountain peaks in SE QLD to find their endemic plants, often returning more than once to capture that elusive flower or fruit. Lui also abseiled off cliffs to document and conserve some relict species from the last ice age and discovered a couple of taxa new to science in the process. Thousands of kilometers driven and hundreds hiked, into some of the most remote places, in our spectacular corner of Queensland have created this guide to our most conservation signficant flora species. Lets all work together to ensure the survival of our most threatened plants into the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the most comprehensive compilation of data on threatened vascular plants ever published. It includes the names of some 33,000 plant species determined to be rare or threatened on a global scale. Conservation assessments were provided by the IUCN Species Survival Commission, the National Botanical Institute (South Africa), Environment Australia, and CSIRO, The Nature Conservancy, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, together with hundreds of botanic gardens and botanists throughout the world. The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and the New York Botanical Garden have made major in-kind contributions. The result of 20 years work by botanists and conservationists around the world, it is intended as a conservation tool, a provider of baseline information to measure conservation progress and as a primary source of data on plant species. Most importantly, however, it provides the building blocks on which to base a worldwide effort to conserve plant species.

Book Synopsis Genetics and Conservation of Rare Plants by : Donald A. Falk
Download or read book Genetics and Conservation of Rare Plants written by Donald A. Falk and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-11-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 700 species of plants may become extinct by the year 2000. Faced with this overwhelming prospect, plant conservationists must take advantage of every technique available. This unique work summarizes our current knowledge of the genetics and population biology of rare plants, and integrates it with practical conservation recommendations. It features discussions on the distribution and significance of genetic variation, management and evaluation of rare plant germplasm, and conservation strategies for genetic diversity. Case studies focusing on specific problems offer important insights for today's challenges in rare plant conservation.
Book Synopsis Australia's Poisonous Plants, Fungi and Cyanobacteria by : Ross McKenzie
Download or read book Australia's Poisonous Plants, Fungi and Cyanobacteria written by Ross McKenzie and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's Poisonous Plants, Fungi and Cyanobacteria is the first full-colour, comprehensive guide to the major natural threats to health in Australia affecting domestic and native animals and humans. The overriding aim of the book is to prevent poisoning, as there are few effective treatments available, particularly in domestic animals. The species have been chosen because of their capacity to threaten life or damage important organs, their relative abundance or wide distribution in native and naturalised Australian flora, or because of their extensive cultivation as crops, pastures or in gardens. These include flowering plants, ferns and cone-bearing plants, macrofungi, ergot fungi and cyanobacteria. The plant species are grouped by life form such as herbs, grasses and sedges, shrubs, trees, and for flowering plants by flower type and colour for ease of identification. Species described have colour photographs, distribution maps and notes on confusing species, habitats, toxins, animals affected, conditions of poisoning, clinical signs and symptoms, post mortem changes, therapy, prevention and control. Symbols are used for quick reference to poisoning duration and available ways of managing poisoning. As further aids to understanding, poisoning hot-spots are highlighted and the book lists plants under the headings of animals affected and organs affected. A Digest gives brief details for all poisonous species in Australia. This book is written in a straightforward style making it accessible to a wide audience including farmers, veterinarians, agricultural advisors, gardeners, horticulturists, botanists and park rangers, medical practitioners and paramedics, teachers, parents and pet owners. First published in 2012 as a hardback and made available in eBook format in 2020.
