A recent evaluation of urban research in developing countries noted that scant data are available on the urban environment, as little research has been done on the topic. This first volume in a two-volume set describes the development of a three-step evaluation process whereby data are collected and analyzed to support the involvement of stakeholders, suggests future directions and improvements, and summarizes results from use of the approach in selected cities. The second of a two- volume set (see below) contains tools that practitioners and researchers can apply directly in the field. See also Volume 2 (ISBN 0-8213-2791-7) Stock No. 12791.

Book Synopsis Manual for Undertaking National Urban Assessments by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Manual for Undertaking National Urban Assessments written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urbanization in Asia is expected to reach 55% by 2030 and 64% by 2050 to constitute 53% of the world's urban population and contribute half the world's gross domestic product. But as cities swell, they also struggle with environmental degradation, traffic congestion, inadequate urban infrastructure, and lack of basic civic services. This manual prepared by Urban Sector Group of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) provides guidelines for conducting rapid urban assessments. It is guided by the Urban Operational Plan 2012-2020 which outlines ADB's support to its members in developing their urban economies through the 3E approach (Economy, Environment, and Equity). It presents a framework providing a context for the city-level 3E tool kits (Tool Kit for Rapid Economic Assessment, Planning, and Development of Cities in Asia; Green City Development Tool Kit; and Enabling Inclusive Cities: Tool Kit for Inclusive Urban Development).

Book Synopsis Household Responses to Poverty and Vulnerability by : Caroline O. N. Moser
Download or read book Household Responses to Poverty and Vulnerability written by Caroline O. N. Moser and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998-03-31 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research paper describes the main results from the community of Angyalfold, in Budapest, Hungary. The research is concerned with the strategies adopted by the urban poor to reduce vulnerability and prevent impoverishment during periods of economic stress. This type of study assists policymakers in designing effective locally based solutions that ensure the poor are themselves active agents of growth, rather than passive recipients of compensatory measures. Three features distinguish this study from other poverty studies:a micro-level approach combining households and communities as the main units of analysis, an unusually long period of observation for some communities and households, and a comparative framework offering fours cases with very different economic development levels and institutional contexts. The study concludes with some priority recommendations for action:1) support households in their role as safety net; 2) alleviate constraints on women's labor supply; 3) ensure that social capital is not taken for granted; 4) develop social policy that integrates human capital and social capital; 5) pursue further research; and 6) develop tools and indicators to strengthen the assets of the poor.

Book Synopsis Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Hydropower Projects by : Robert Zwahlen
Download or read book Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Hydropower Projects written by Robert Zwahlen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the entire process of environmental impact assessment for hydropower and dam projects, not from a legal or regulatory point of view, but from a very applied one, based mainly on the personal experience of the author, who is involved in this field of work since over 40 years, by describing the different steps of such an assessment, covering all major aspects to be dealt with. The focus is on environmental issues, while the other main subject—social impacts—is mentioned here only briefly. It will be of interest not only for ESIA (Environmental and Social Impact Assessment) practitioners, be they consultants involved in the preparation of such studies or staff members of environmental protection agencies having to come to decisions based on them, but also for engineers and planners involved in such projects, developers, and people interested in questions related to energy, environment, and climate change. Overall, this book aims at contributing to put the discussion about hydropower and dam projects on a more objective level.

Book Synopsis Integrating City Planning and Environmental Improvement by : Gert de Roo
Download or read book Integrating City Planning and Environmental Improvement written by Gert de Roo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Integrating City Planning and Environmental Improvement was originally published in 1999, the practice of integrating urban physical planning and environmental quality management has been widely adopted by governments worldwide. Fully revised and updated with a new preface by editors Donald Miller and Gert de Roo and new figures throughout, this second edition reports on the experience of 23 innovative programmes from 11 countries. Mostly written by practicing planners and government officials, the book looks at a wide range of integrated approaches which have been implemented and the critical assessment of these provides lessons for local and national governments interested in setting up similar schemes and suggesting ways of further innovation. While the Rio Earth summit, Habitat II and Kyoto have been a source of global principles for improving the environmental quality of human settlements, this book explores approaches to implement these policy positions and to make these calls for action operational. Consequently, the presentation of these cases deals not only with the technical aspects of measuring and controlling environmental spillovers, but also with the institutional, political and financial aspects of these programmes.
