Book excerpt: Experiments conducted at USA CRREL in recent years indicate that the two weeks or so required for the frost susceptibility testing of soils with previous procedures can be shortened considerably. Results of these experiments show that useful frost heaving data can be obtained in a matter of 2 or 3 days by a more rapid freezing technique. Results of experiments in which soil specimens were exposed to a constantly maintained temperature are presented. Data show that heave rate in laboratory experiments is a variable, not a constant, of a soil and is strongly dependent upon the heat extraction rate. The important role of frost susceptibility testing and soil evaluation for highway design is discussed. The suitability of equipment for use in conducting frost-heaving tests is also discussed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new freezing test for determining the frost susceptibility of soils is presented to supplant the standard CRREL freezing test currently specified by the Corps of Engineers. This test reduces the time required to determine the frost susceptibility of a soil in half. It also allows for the determination of both the frost heave and thaw weakening susceptibilities and considers the effects of freeze-thaw cycling. The new freezing test eliminates much of the variability in test results caused by the human element by completely automating the temperature control and data observations. Keywords: Airfields; Frost-susceptible soils; Pavement design; Roads.

Book excerpt: Methods of determining the frost susceptibility of soils are identified and presented in this report. More than one hundred criteria were found, the most common based on particle size caharacteristics. These particle size criteria are frequently augmented by information such as grain size distribution, uniformity coefficients and Atterberg limits. Information on permeability, mineralogy and soil classification has also been used. More complex methods requiring pore size distribution, moisture-tension, hydraulic-conductivity, heave-stress, and frost-heave tests have also been proposed. However, none has proven to be the universal test for determining the frost susceptibility of soils. Based on this survey, four methods are proposed for further study. They are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Frost Susceptibility Classification System, the moisture-tension hydraulic-conductivity test, a new frost-heave test, and the CBR-after-thaw test. (Author).

Download or read book Freezing Test for Evaluating Relative Frost Susceptibility of Various Soils written by C. W. Kaplar and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a description of the equipment and procedures used in the laboratory test of the relative frost susceptibility of different soils on Corps of Engineers construction projects and includes typical results of freezing tests of natural soils. The test uses a slow unidirectional freezing of a 6-in. high, remolded or undisturbed soil specimen with water available at the base (open system). The heaving rate measured during the test is used as the basis for classification of the frost susceptibility potential of the soil. This type of test, which measures heaving rate, is considered most versatile and adaptable for evaluating the effects of numerous soil parameters on frost heave. (Author).
Book Synopsis Evaluation of Selected Frost Susceptibility Test Methods by : Edwin J. Chamberlain
Download or read book Evaluation of Selected Frost Susceptibility Test Methods written by Edwin J. Chamberlain and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three methods for determining the frost susceptibility of soils are evaluated in this report. These methods are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers frost design soil classification system, a moisture-tension/hydraulic-conductivity test, and a laboratory freeze-thaw test. The Corps method, which is based on particle size, soil classification, and a laboratory freezing test, was found to be useful for identifying frost-susceptibility. The moisture-hydraulic-conductivity test was found to be unacceptable because it required too much time and its results correlated poorly with field observations. The freeze-thaw test was determined to be the most accurate of the methods studied, including the freeze test that is a part of the Corps method. The freeze-thaw test is thoroughly described. It includes indexes of both frost-heave susceptibility (heave rate) and thaw-weakening susceptibility (CBR after thawing). It also accounts for the effects of freeze-thaw cycling and is completely automated to improve the repeatability of the test results. It is suggested that the freeze-thaw test considered as a replacement for the Corps freezing test.
