Book Synopsis Tracing the Visual Language of Raphael’s Circle to 1527 by : Alexis R. Culotta

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Tracing the Visual Language of Raphael’s Circle to 1527, Alexis Culotta examines how the Renaissance master’s style – one infused with borrowed visual quotations from other artists both past and present – proved influential in his relationship with associate Baldassare Peruzzi and in the development of the artists within his thriving workshop. Shedding new light on the important, yet often-overshadowed, figures within this network, this book calls upon key case studies to convincingly illustrate how this visual language and its recombination evolved during Raphael’s Roman career and subsequently served as a springboard for artistic innovation for these close associates as they collaborated in the years following Raphael’s death.
Book Synopsis The Myth of Apollo and Marsyas in Italian Renaissance Art by : Edith Wyss
Download or read book The Myth of Apollo and Marsyas in Italian Renaissance Art written by Edith Wyss and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titian's great late painting of Apollo and Marsyas has been included in several recent exhibitions of Venetian painting in Europe and the United States. In this study, art historian Edith Wyss sheds light on the perception of the theme in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Renaissance artists knew several outstanding antique sculptures representing the myth and drew often on these prestigious models for inspiration. Only from the third decade of the sixteenth century onward did autonomous artistic interpretations of the myth assert themselves. Among the artists who devoted their skills to this myth are Perugino, Raphael, and several of his followers - Giulio Romano, Parmigianino, Bronzino, Salviati, Tintoretto, and Titian. Wyss demonstrates that some depictions encode messages that transcend the obvious exhortation against pride. Taking their cue from a popular edition of the Metamorphoses, some patrons and artists viewed the myth as an allegory of the revelation of truth. Others, following Pythagorean teachings, perceived the sun god's lyre music as the music of the spheres. In this perception, Apollo's victory assures the continued harmonious functioning of the universe, and Marsyas's defiance of the sun god's authority called for the severest retribution. In a few instances the author demonstrates that the Pythagorean allegorical reading of the myth was borrowed for political ends, with Apollo's victorious lyre standing as metaphor for the supposedly harmonious government of the ruling power. The discussion allows the Marsyas myth to unfold in a theme of extraordinary richness and depth and touches on issues that were at the core of the Renaissance culture.

Download or read book Raphael - Volume 1 written by Eugène Müntz and published by Parkstone International. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raphael (1483-1520), the Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, was a genius in and ahead of his time. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he formed the classical trinity of this era and elaborated a rich style of harmony and geometry. As one of the great masters of the Renaissance and artist to European royalty and the Papal court in Rome, his works comprise various themes of theology and philosophy, including but not limited to famous illustrations of the Madonna. His surroundings and experience gave rise to his propensity to combine the ideals of humanism with those of religion, and firmly established in him a conviction that art is a necessary medium to reveal the beauty of nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirroring, doubling, imitation, parody, intertextuality. The contributors to this volume — all postgraduate researchers at the time of writing — engage with some of these familiar words to produce articles that deal with the concept of “reflections” in literary and visual culture. Ranging from Italian Golden Age theatre to contemporary French literature and from Cuban film to German fiction, the twelve essays in this volume provide a fresh look at Modern Language Studies, highlighting in particular, the interdisciplinary nature of this field. On one level, the volume speaks to those exploring Modern Language Studies for the first time, for example, undergraduate students, who seek a greater understanding of the dialogue between language and culture. However, the individual essays also have the potential to attract experienced scholars either looking for new knowledge on specialist subjects, or ways of approaching research in Modern Languages. Through its central theme, Reflections: New Perspectives in Modern Languages and Cultures makes some suggestions about the way forward for Modern Language Studies.
Book Synopsis The Translation of Raphael's Roman Style by : Henk Th. van Veen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The papers show that the response to the new style was without exception a very conscious one. In Siena and Venice it was simply rejected, whereas in Pesaro, Mantua, Rome and Fontainebleau it was transformed or attempts were made even to surpass it. In other cases, Florence in particular, the answer to the new Raphaelesque style was found by proposing a conspicuously Michelangelesque one instead."--BOOK JACKET.
