Book excerpt: Break free from your usual routine and find adventure in your own neighborhood with this official field guide to the popular Randonautica app. Randonauts everywhere are exploring the world outside of their usual daily routes and expanding their previous understandings of the mind-matter connection. They are finding that once they arrive, there is often an eerily spot-on connection to the intention they set before generating the coordinates. Or they simply discover a place they haven’t been before. In The Official Guide to Randonautica, the creators of the popular app explain how the intentions from the user translate to randomly generated coordinates, and all the theories about why users’ set intentions can be so closely related to what they find at the given location. This book gives you the opportunity to log your experiences so you can make the most of what you discover on these journeys. Whether you’re a new randonaut or a seasoned expert, this book is the perfect field guide for your next adventure.

Book excerpt: From the internationally bestselling creator of Wreck This Journal... wan·der verb \ˈwän-dər\ to walk/explore/amble in an unplanned or aimless way with a complete openness to the unknown Several years ago when Keri Smith, bestselling author of Wreck This Journal, discovered cryptic handwritten notations in a worn copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, her interest was piqued. Little did she know at the time that those simple markings would become the basis of a years-long, life-changing exploration into a mysterious group known only as The Wander Society, as well as the subject of this book. Within these pages, you’ll find the results of Smith’s research: A guide to the Wander Society, a secretive group that holds up the act of wandering, or unplanned exploring, as a way of life. You’ll learn about the group’s mysterious origins, meet fellow wanderers through time, discover how wandering feeds the creative mind, and learn how to best practice the art of wandering, should you choose to accept the mission.

Book excerpt: A step-by-step guide to the process of “scripting” your future and successfully manifesting what you want in life • Explores the science behind how the scripting method works and shares the vivid journal entries from the author’s big breakthrough--when he successfully used his method to land a lead role on a TV show • Details how the understanding of incredible new (and, until now, mostly unheard of) scientific discoveries and emerging technologies is the most important key to creating and manifesting in your life • Reveals fun, easy tools for manifesting and self-help, updated for a new generation In this step-by-step guide, filled with success stories and practical exercises, Royce Christyn details a simple “scripting” process for harnessing the Law of Attraction and manifesting what you want in your life--happiness, wealth, travel, love, health, the perfect career, or simply a productive day. The process is backed by science and experience, yet it feels like magic. And all you need is a pen and paper. Inspired by New Thought and Positive Thinking classics, Christyn explains how he developed his scripting method through 4 years of trial and error, keeping what worked and dropping what didn’t until he brought his success rate from 5% to nearly 100%. Sharing pages from his own journals, he outlines how to create the life you want with daily journaling exercises, beginning with a simple list-making practice to figure out your wants and intentions and then progressing to actual scripting of your future, whether the next 12 hours or the next 10 days. He shows how, over time, your scripts will increase in accuracy until they converge with reality. He shares the vivid entries from his big breakthrough--when he successfully used his method to land a lead guest-starring role on Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place with Selena Gomez. He explores how “feeling” your future success as you write your daily scripts helps attract your desired outcomes, and he shares the key phrases to include to make your script come true. The author also explores the science behind how the scripting method works, including a down-to-earth examination of quantum mechanics. From small dreams to lifelong goals, this book gives you the tools to put your thoughts into action and finally close the gap between where you are and where you want to be in your life.

Book excerpt: “Bringing together rigorous research and a vibrant writing style” (School Library Journal), Code Name Verity meets Inglourious Basterds in this riotous, spirited biography of the most dangerous of all Allied spies, courageous and kickass Virginia Hall. When James Bond was still in diapers, Virginia Hall was behind enemy lines, playing a dangerous game of cat and mouse with Hitler’s henchmen. Did she have second thoughts after a terrible accident left her needing a wooden leg? Please. Virginia Hall was the baddest broad in any room she walked into. When the State Department proved to be a sexist boys’ club that wouldn’t let her in, she gave the finger to society’s expectations of women and became a spy for the British. This boss lady helped arm and train the French Resistance and organized sabotage missions. There was just one problem: The Butcher of Lyon, a notorious Gestapo commander, was after her. But, hey—Virginia’s classmates didn’t call her the Fighting Blade for nothing. So how does a girl who was a pirate in the school play, spent her childhood summers milking goats, and rocked it on the hockey field end up becoming the Gestapo’s most wanted spy? Audacious, irreverent, and fiercely feminist, Code Name Badass is for anyone who doesn’t take no for an answer.

Who’s Counting? features dozens of his insightful essays—original writings on contemporary issues like the COVID-19 pandemic, online conspiracy theories, “fake news,” and climate change, as well as a selection of enduring columns from his popular ABC News column of the same name. With an abiding respect for reason, a penchant for puzzles with societal implications, and a disarming sense of humor, Paulos does in this collection what he’s famous for: clarifies mathematical ideas for everyone and shows how they play a role in government, media, popular culture, and life. He argues that if we can’t critically interpret numbers and statistics, we lose one of our most basic and reliable guides to reality.

Secrecy has played a role throughout human history and continues to capture the popular imagination. Some of the most seductive aspects of the Byzantine Empire—such as the relics of the imperial palace and the military uses of Greek fire—have been shrouded in mystery for centuries. This book provides a brief history of secrecy in Byzantium and examines the role of the art historian in uncovering the truth, demonstrating how visual evidence can not only reveal new findings but also purposely conceal answers. Art historians face many challenges in their search for hidden knowledge, including accessing accounts preserved in fragmentary glimpses and reconciling how practices of speculation and reconstruction result in different, and sometimes contradictory, understandings. With pressing urgency, this book asks scholars to consider their role in articulating the stories of marginalized people, particularly for queer and trans history. At the core of these investigations is the quest to discover how clandestine knowledge was transmitted and how relationships were strengthened by collective secret keeping, as well as how concealment is used as a strategy for exercising power. With insights into the religious, imperial, military, and cultural uses of secrecy, this book offers an intriguing look at the ways secrecy manifested itself during the Byzantine Empire and the implications it has for the issues we face today.

Book excerpt: Here's what you'll learn in this book: Ch 1 How social media can hurt your kid's future Ch 2 Common social media mistakes made Ch 3 What social media posts and strategies impress colleges Ch 4 What social media posts and strategies impress future employers Ch 5 Social networks that help you shine online Ch 6 How and when to privatize your image Ch 7 How to talk to your kids Ch 8 How to make a plan together Ch 9 Case studies from successful students making a difference Over the past several years, I have had the great opportunity to work with some of the world's best brands. My staff and I developed and implemented techniques to help these companies shine online. And they have! By employing a few social media strategies, these great companies are finding the customers they want and deserve. It quickly came to my attention that my techniques would be valuable to families who are preparing their kids for college. Many kids have no idea how their digital footprint might be viewed by others and how others' perceptions can hold them back. During a 2013 Kaplan telephone questionnaire, 31% of college admissions officers said that they did visit applicants Facebook and other social media pages to gain more information on the student. 30% said that they had encountered information on social media that had a negative influence on an applicant's chance of being accepted. This goes to show that anything we put online, no matter how long ago, can be brought up on the first page of Google results and we need to be vigilant on what we allow others to see.1 In this book, you will receive the same strategies I've used to help many successful companies, but tailored to students and future leaders, to help them impress colleges and future employers. As I've traveled the country for the past year and spoken to over 20,000 students, the feedback has been clear: these methods work, helping kids convey their best selves online. These methods employed keep their online images and communications Light, Bright and Polite(r), which allows colleges and employers find the best people to represent their campus upon graduation. Your kid can be among them. It's a competitive market out there, so let's not be disqualified from something to which you're aspiring without ever having a real chance at interviewing for the opportunity! It is never too early to start planning ahead. Your kids may not be thinking about it, but certainly you understand from experience that what you do now can have lasting effects. At the very least, what you do now lays the foundation for the habits that you will have years from now. Even if your children are not on social media yet, their reputation online starts as soon as their friends are online and posting photos of them, tagging them. So, there's a lot to consider! Since parents have limited time, this book isn't designed to teach everything about social media. I'm not here to give you a list of 100 things not to do on social media. Instead, my goal is to have students and parents skim through this book and be able to pick up one or two helpful tips that can make all the difference. What accomplishments does your kid want to have in the next five years? Getting into college Full ride scholarship Varsity sports team Study abroad opportunity Leadership award Community service Getting into a prestigious private high school Getting the perfect internship that launches their career If any of these apply, then you need to pay attention to all of the messages that your child sends out on social media. There's a good chance that 50% of their tweets might not be helping them to reach their goals. They need to be vigilant. Josh Ochs @JoshOchs"

Book excerpt: The term "psychogeography" is used to illustrate a bewildering array of ideas, from ley lines and the occult to urban walking and political radicalism—where does it come from and what exactly does it mean? Psychogeography is the point where psychology and geography meet in assessing the emotional and behavioral impact of urban space. The relationship between a city and its inhabitants is measured firstly through an imaginative and literary response, secondly on foot through walking the city. This creates a tradition of the writer as walker and has both a literary and a political component. This guide examines the origins of psychogeography in the Situationist Movement of the 1950s, exploring the theoretical background and its political applications as well as the work of early practitioners such as Guy Debord and Raoul Vaneigem. Elsewhere, psychogeographic ideas continue to find retrospective validation in much earlier traditions from the visionary writing of William Blake and Thomas De Quincey to the rise of the flâneur on the streets of 19th century Paris and on through the avant-garde experimentation of the Surrealists. These precursors are discussed here alongside their modern counterparts, for today these ideas hold greater currency than ever through the popularity of writers and filmmakers such as Iain Sinclair and Peter Ackroyd, Stewart Home and Patrick Keiller. This guide offers both an explanation and definition of the terms involved, an analysis of the key figures and their work, and practical information on psychogeographical groups and organizations.
