Book excerpt: For many communication applications with time constraints (e.g., transmission of packetized voice messages), a critical performance measure is the percentage of messages which are transmitted within a given amount of time after their generation at the transmitting station. In this talk we present a random access algorithm (RAA) suitable for time-constrained applications. Performance analysis demonstrates that significant message delay improvement is attained, at the expense of minimal traffic loss. We also consider the case of noisy channels. The noise effect appears at erroneously observed channel feedback. Error sensitivity analysis shows that the proposed random access algorithm is insensitive to feedback channel errors. Window Random Access Algorithms (RAAs) are considered next. These algorithms constitute an important subclass of Multiple Access Algorithms (MAAs); they are distributive and they attain high throughput and low delays by controlling the number of simultaneously transmitting users. By now, it is well known that fixed assignment techniques are not appropriate for a system with large population of bursty users. In the latter case, random access protocols are more efficient and many of them have been suggested. Usually, the amount of information transmitted per time is of fixed length, called a packet. In most of the systems, time is divided into slots of length equal to the time needed for a packet transmission (slotted systems). The deployment of an ever increasing number of multi-user random access communication networks, Brought up the question of how packets whose destination is another network, should be handled. Thus, the issue of network interconnection or multi-hop packet transmission, arises, 3, 6, 7. The basic problem in analyzing interconnected systems is that of characterizing the output process of a multi-user random access communication system; i.e., the departure process of the successfully transmitted packets.

We model the channel noise as two types of erroneous feedbacks observed by the users. Specifically, with some probabilities, a successful channel slot and an empty channel slot can be seen as collision slots. For such systems, we analyze the stability conditions of a random access algorithm, both in its full sensing and limited sensing versions. We exhibit the superior resistance of the algorithm to the above feedback errors.

An increased demand for flexible and easily modified communication systems has supported recent interest in applications of communication networks to a wide variety of problems such as mobile packet radio, distributed sensor systems, satellite networks, and a plethora of applications in integrated computer communications. Such systems are typically characterized by a large number of users attempting to communicate with a central node via a common communication media. The multiaccess communication problem examines how to utilize most efficiently the available communication resources. This thesis proposes two random-access algorithms appropriate for operation in networks employing capture (that is, the correct reception of a single transmission in the presence of multiple transmissions). Both the paradigmatic ternary-feedback model as well as an enriched-feedback scheme are considered. After observing the regenerative properties of these algorithms, several results from renewal theory are employed to compute the throughput and delay characteristics of the proposed algorithms. It is shown that significant performance improvements (as compared to non-capture systems) are possible using systems with capture and employing appropriate random-access algorithms. Extensive numerical results are included.

In 1961, Claude Shannon established the foundation for the discipline now known as “multi-user information theory” in his pioneering paper “Two-way Communication Channels,” and later Norman Abramson published his paper “The Aloha System—Another Alternative for Computer Communications” in 1970 which introduced the concept of multiple access using a shared common channel. Thereafter, for more than 40 years of study, numerous elegant theories and algorithms have been developed for multiple-access communications. During the 1980s and 1990s the evolution of multiple-access techniques p- ceeded in conjunction with the evolution of wireless networks. Novel multiple access techniques like code division multiple access (CDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) provided increased spectral - ?ciency, dynamicity and ?exibility in radio resource allocation with intrinsic anti-multipath and anti-interference features. In this ?rst decade of the 21st century,multiple-accesstechniques,derivedfromadvancedwirelesstransmission methodologiesbasedonthediversityconcept(e. g. ,MC-CDMA,MIMO-OFDMA and SC-FDMA), opened the road to a renewed idea of multiple access. Today multiple-access communications involve many challenging aspects not only l- ited (like in the past) to physical layer design. Medium access control (MAC) techniques play a crucial role in managing the radio resources that users will exploit to transmit their data streams. Recent developments in software radios and cognitive radios have led to a signi?cant impact also on spectrum m- agement and access paradigms.
