This book was released on 1973 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining the results from multifold approach with that from flora and fauna, primitive tribes, and a critical study of the Ramayana he came to the conclusion that the Ramayana as it exists today is not old as popularly believed, but also is largely mythical. Ravana was an ordinary human being, as the epic expressly says so. And Lanka was situated in the Vidhyas. Thus Rama had not crossed the Narbada. These old views have now been corroborated archaeologically.

Download or read book Mahabharata Book Three (Volume 4) written by and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Slender lady, I came out with you to gather fruit. I got a pain in my head and fell asleep in your lap. Then I saw a terrible darkness and a mighty person. If you know, then tell me - was it my dream? Or was what I saw real?” So speaks Satyavat, newly rescued from the god of death by Savitri, his faithful wife, at the heart of one of the best loved stories in Indian literature. This, and other well known narratives, including a version of Rama's story, bring the Forest Book of the great Sanskrit epic, the Maha·bhárata, to its compelling conclusion. Woven into the main narrative of the Pandavas’ exile, these disparate episodes indicate the range and poetic power of the Maha·bhárata as a whole—a power that has the potential to speak to common human concerns across cultures and centuries. “The Forest” is Book Three of the Maha·bhárata, “The Great Book of India.” This final quarter of the account of the Pándavas’ twelve-year exile in the forest contains four stirring stories that are among the best known in Indian literature. From a hero overcoming great odds, to a virtuous wife who rescues her family, and Indra tricking Karna, and Yudhi·shthira’s victory in the verbal contest with the tree spirit, these stories speak to common human concerns across cultures and centuries. Book Synopsis Scholastic Sanskrit by : Gary Alan Tubb
Download or read book Scholastic Sanskrit written by Gary Alan Tubb and published by Aibs. This book was released on 2007 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gives a complete introduction to the techniques and procedures of Sanskrit commentaries, including detailed information on the overall structure of running commentaries, the standard formulas of analysis of complex grammatical forms, and the most important elements of commentarial style. Since the majority of expository texts in Sanskrit are composed in the form of commentaries on earlier texts, this Manual will be of great use to many Sanskrit translators. Furthermore, because many philosophical and scientific texts are written in the style of formal debate using the same basic principles, the features covered in the manual are useful for reading all expository texts, whether they are commentaries or not. Book Synopsis Hindutva as Political Monotheism by : Anustup Basu
Download or read book Hindutva as Political Monotheism written by Anustup Basu and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hindutva as Political Monotheism, Anustup Basu offers a genealogical study of Hindutva—Hindu right-wing nationalism—to illustrate the significance of Western anthropology and political theory to the idea of India as a Hindu nation. Connecting Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt's notion of political theology to traditional theorems of Hindu sovereignty and nationhood, Basu demonstrates how Western and Indian theorists subsumed a vast array of polytheistic, pantheistic, and henotheistic cults featuring millions of gods into a singular edifice of faith. Basu exposes the purported “Hindu Nation” as itself an orientalist vision by analyzing three crucial moments: European anthropologists’ and Indian intellectuals’ invention of a unified Hinduism during the long nineteenth century; Indian ideologues’ adoption of ethnoreligious nationalism in pursuit of a single Hindu way of life in the twentieth century; and the transformations of this project in the era of finance capital, Bollywood, and new media. Arguing that Hindutva aligns with Enlightenment notions of nationalism, Basu foregrounds its significance not just to Narendra Modi's right-wing, anti-Muslim government but also to mainstream Indian nationalism and its credo of secularism and tolerance.

Download or read book The Stories of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata written by John Campbell Oman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1900, this volume reproduces the key events of the Ramayana and Mahabharata Indian epics. It emerged amongst significant academic interest in Indian culture and literature. Whilst many Indian histories had provided abstracts and full texts of the two epics presented here, this book provided reproductions of the main incidents and striking features of these two otherwise imposing, lengthy works. The volume deals with each text separately and presents several key excerpts along with a general introduction and introductory remarks for both texts.
Download or read book The Hindus written by Wendy Doniger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engrossing and definitive narrative account of history and myth that offers a new way of understanding one of the world's oldest major religions, The Hindus elucidates the relationship between recorded history and imaginary worlds. Hinduism does not lend itself easily to a strictly chronological account: many of its central texts cannot be reliably dated even within a century; its central tenets karma, dharma, to name just two arise at particular moments in Indian history and differ in each era, between genders, and caste to caste; and what is shared among Hindus is overwhelmingly outnumbered by the things that are unique to one group or another. Yet the greatness of Hinduism - its vitality, its earthiness, its vividness - lies precisely in many of those idiosyncratic qualities that continue to inspire debate today. Wendy Doniger is one of the foremost scholars of Hinduism in the world. With her inimitable insight and expertise Doniger illuminates those moments within the tradition that resist forces that would standardize or establish a canon. Without reversing or misrepresenting the historical hierarchies, she reveals how Sanskrit and vernacular sources are rich in knowledge of and compassion toward women and lower castes; how they debate tensions surrounding religion, violence, and tolerance; and how animals are the key to important shifts in attitudes toward different social classes. The Hindus brings a fascinating multiplicity of actors and stories to the stage to show how brilliant and creative thinkers - many of them far removed from Brahmin authors of Sanskrit texts - have kept Hinduism alive in ways that other scholars have not fully explored. In this unique and authoritative account, debates about Hindu traditions become platforms from which to consider the ironies, and overlooked epiphanies, of history.
