Book excerpt: A deeply moving and painfully honest memoir from the trailblazing, World Cup–winning, Olympic gold medalist, and US Women’s soccer goalie Briana Scurry Briana Scurry was a pioneer on the US Women’s National Team. She won gold in Atlanta in 1996, the first time women’s soccer was ever played in the Olympics. She was a key part of the fabled “99ers,” making an epic save in the decisive penalty-kick shootout in the final. Scurry captured her second Olympic gold in 2004, cementing her status as one of the premier players in the world. She was the only Black player on the team, and she was also the first player to be openly gay. It was a singularly amazing ride, one that Scurry handled with her trademark generosity and class—qualities that made her one of the most popular players ever to wear a US jersey. But Scurry’s storybook career ended in 2010 when a knee to the head left her with severe head trauma. She was labeled “temporarily totally disabled,” and the reality was even worse. She spiraled into depression, debt, and endured such pain that she closed out her closest friends and soccer soulmates. She pawned her gold medals. She walked to the edge of a waterfall and contemplated suicide. It seemed like the only way out until Scurry made her greatest save of all. A memoir of startling candor, My Greatest Save is a story of triumph, tragedy, and redemption from a woman who has broken through barriers her entire life.

Download or read book Food Justice written by Robert Gottlieb and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of how the emerging food justice movement is seeking to transform the American food system from seed to table. In today's food system, farm workers face difficult and hazardous conditions, low-income neighborhoods lack supermarkets but abound in fast-food restaurants and liquor stores, food products emphasize convenience rather than wholesomeness, and the international reach of American fast-food franchises has been a major contributor to an epidemic of “globesity.” To combat these inequities and excesses, a movement for food justice has emerged in recent years seeking to transform the food system from seed to table. In Food Justice, Robert Gottlieb and Anupama Joshi tell the story of this emerging movement. A food justice framework ensures that the benefits and risks of how food is grown and processed, transported, distributed, and consumed are shared equitably. Gottlieb and Joshi recount the history of food injustices and describe current efforts to change the system, including community gardens and farmer training in Holyoke, Massachusetts, youth empowerment through the Rethinkers in New Orleans, farm-to-school programs across the country, and the Los Angeles school system's elimination of sugary soft drinks from its cafeterias. And they tell how food activism has succeeded at the highest level: advocates waged a grassroots campaign that convinced the Obama White House to plant a vegetable garden. The first comprehensive inquiry into this emerging movement, Food Justice addresses the increasing disconnect between food and culture that has resulted from our highly industrialized food system.

Book Synopsis Mental Health and Social Policy by : David Mechanic
Download or read book Mental Health and Social Policy written by David Mechanic and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just a few years ago there was much optimism that the American health care system would be reformed and that we would have a system of universal insurance entitlement with few people uninsured. The realization that full mental health benefits would only be financially acceptable within a managed care framework suggests the importance of managed care as an instrument for achieving broader coverage at an acceptable cost. Yet, it remains to be seen to what extent the marketplace will direct the future development of managed care and what role professional agencies, government, and consumer organizations will have in making managed care organizations accountable to the public. This book takes a multidisciplinary approach to mental health and social policy. It covers mental health issues such as definitions of mental disorders, the epidemiology of mental illness, case management, community treatment, mental health research, and questions of policy. It also includes the definitions of disability and the links to federal programs and housing and employment services that will be of special interest to social workers. Mental health care providers, social workers, and therapists.
Book Synopsis Journey with the Fathers by : Edith Barnecut
Download or read book Journey with the Fathers written by Edith Barnecut and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey with the Fathers, Year C, is a notable series of helpful meditations on the Sunday gospels. It is the Greats of Christianity who speak, explaining the scriptures to you with their timeless clarity and profound wisdom. You will find this series useful whether you are meditating on the gospels, preparing a Sunday homily, or just interested in strengthening your spiritual life. This user-friendly compendium of commentaries on Lectionary C should prove valuable to all who thirst after a closer communion with God. The editor has skillfully selected appropriate commentary and sermon texts from such major patristic thinkers as Augustine, Cyril of Alexandria, John Chrysostom, Origen, and Gregory of Nyssa, as well as passages from lesser known patristic and medieval sources... The brief biographical notes following each selection will be especially helpful to the general reader." Dr. Dennis Bielfeldt Grand View College of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Des Moines, IA This fine collection of reflections on the gospel readings for Sundays will be of great value in both personal and public use. Imaginatively chosen, impeccably translated, relevant to today's world, the passages are taken from sources spanning the centuries from the third to the twentieth. They are timeless in their message and will speak to Christians of many traditions." Agatha Mary, S.P.B. Burnham Abbey, England Each Sunday Gospel is adorned with a reading from one of the early classic writers. The selection is appropriate not only for preparing homilies but also for prayerful meditation." The Bible Today A collection of homilies on the gospels for Sundays and the principal feasts which replace the Sunday celebrations. Special care has been taken in making the translations so they may be proclaimed effectively. There is a brief introduction to the life and ministry of each author included in the collection." Worship Proclaimers of the Word would do well to add Journey with the Fathers to their collections of resource material. Augustine and Irenaeus are here, but so, too, are Thomas More and John Henry Newman. All providing sound and substantial insights into the Sunday and major feast gospels for an entire yearly cycle." Rev. Joseph M. Champlin
