Book excerpt: To celebrate Zack's latest writing accomplishment, namely hitting the NY Times Bestsellers list for his latest book, Heart of Éire, Zack, Jillian, and the dogs fly to New Orleans to help promote the book at a large book expo. Accompanying them are none other than good friends Vance and Tori Samuelson, since it was the detective's idea to write a story featuring his Irish wife in the first place. However, once they arrive, a blatant attack during the exposition sends everyone into a panic. The only clues that could be found were security footage of a mysterious stranger, seen hurrying away after dropping a voodoo doll for all to see, complete with pins stuck through it. Was the stranger targeting a specific person? Is voodoo to blame, as everyone seems to think? Could someone be after Zack, since this is the first book signing he's done in decades? Join Sherlock and Watson as they start sniffing for clues in the Big Easy! Readers are loving these indomitable dog sleuths. Meet Zack and the corgis, Sherlock and Watson, in this delightfully humorous series that pulls you right in. Praise for Jeffrey Poole and the Corgi Case Files: “I can't wait for the next book. Book excerpt: The fourth book in Sandra Hill's Cajun series serves up laugh-out-loud humor and sizzling romance in equal portions. The long, hot Louisiana summer just got hotter for Rene LeDeux. He returns home to southern Louisiana after quitting his job in Washington as an environmental lobbyist. Years of battling with the oil industry and land developers have left him completely burnt out, and now all he wants to do is work on his cabin on Bayou Black. But his peace of mind is disrupted by a few things. One, his great-aunt Tante Lulu is determined to get him hitched. Two, a couple of his activist friends have hatched a plot to bring national attention to their cause to save the bayou. They've kidnapped a TV celebrity and brought her to Rene's cabin. And three, the celebrity is none other than Valerie "Ice" Breux, Rene's nemesis while growing up. Now Val's stranded in Rene's remote cabin, besieged by irrepressible LeDeux relations, not to mention a dingbat duo out to save the swamp. It's bad enough being kidnapped, but did she have to land in the lap of the most irritating, sexiest hunk she's ever laid her eyes on? Val vows she'll give her heart to the Cajun bad boy when alligators fly. Rene swears to get the girl who got away. It's never been steamier in the bayou than with two people this red-hot with desire...and more than ready for love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Cajuns as a case study, Good God but You Smart! explores the subtle ways language bias is used in classrooms, within families, and in pop culture references to enforce systemic economic inequality. It is the first book in composition studies to examine comprehensively, and from an insider’s perspective, the cultural and linguistic assimilation of Cajuns in Louisiana. The study investigates the complicated motivations and cultural concessions of upwardly mobile Cajuns who “choose” to self-censor—to speak Standardized English over the Cajun English that carries their cultural identity. Drawing on surveys of English teachers in four Louisiana colleges, previously unpublished archival data, and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the legitimate language, author Nichole Stanford explores how socioeconomic and political pressures rooted in language prejudice make code switching, or self-censoring in public, seem a responsible decision. Yet teaching students to skirt others’ prejudice toward certain dialects only puts off actually dealing with the prejudice. Focusing on what goes on outside classrooms, Stanford critiques code switching and cautions users of code meshing that pedagogical responses within the educational system are limited by the reproductive function of schools. Each theory section includes parallel memoir sections in the Cajun tradition of storytelling to open an experiential window to the study without technical language. Through its explication of language legitimacy and its grounding in lived experience, Good God but You Smart! is an essential addition to the pedagogical canon of language minority studies like those of Villanueva, Gilyard, Smitherman, and Rose.

Book excerpt: Hot, Bothered, and In Over Her Head! After finally dumping her no-good fiancé, decorator Rachel Fortier hightails it out of D.C. straight for Cajun country. But her grandma's Louisiana bayou cabin on stilts isn't quite the grand estate she imagined. Throw in a pet alligator named Useless and Remy LeDeux, the smoldering-eyed pilot angling for her family's property, and Rachel's in for a passel of trouble-especially since their chemistry is hotter than the Atchafalaya Swamp in July. With his Tante Lulu itching to marry him off and Rachel's rifle-toting grandma ready to shoot Remy the second he sets foot on her land, the sexiest bad boy this side of the Mason-Dixon Line will need a special kind of voodoo to convince Rachel she was born for the bayou. Chris Strachwitz and Arhoolie Records. These are names that are familiar to many fans of Cajun music and zydeco, and they have one other thing in common--longtime residence in the San Francisco Bay Area. They are all part of a vibrant scene of dancing and live Louisiana-French music that has evolved over several decades. Cajun and Zydeco Dance Music in Northern California traces how this region of California has been able to develop and sustain dances several times a week with more than a dozen bands. Description of this active regional scene opens into a discussion of several historical trends that have affected life and music in Louisiana and the nation. The book portrays the diversity of people who have come together to adopt Cajun and Creole dance music as a way to cope with a globalized, media-saturated world. Ethnomusicologist Mark F. DeWitt innovatively weaves together interviews with musicians and dancers (some from Louisiana, some not), analysis of popular media, participant observation as a musician and dancer, and historical perspectives from wartime black migration patterns, the civil rights movement, American folk and blues revivals, California counterculture, and the rise of cultural tourism in Cajun Country. In so doing, he reveals the multifaceted appeal of celebrating life on the dance floor, Louisiana-French style.

For the past three decades, Dave DeWitt has devoted his life and career to chile peppers and fiery foods, and he publishes the huge Fiery Foods & Barbecue Central (fiery-foods.com), which includes hundreds of articles and thousands of recipes. This new book is composed of the very best dishes from DeWitt’s collection of chile pepper-laden recipes from around the world that he’s acquired on his travels, from colleagues, and by researching authentic, obscure, and out-of-print cookbooks. The book is loaded with a vast array of hot and spicy favorites, including a huge variety of soups, stews, chilis, and gumbos; a broad selection of barbecue dishes for the grill; and a lengthy list of meatless entrees and vegetable options. Included are not just hundreds of spicy main dishes, but also a surprising array of zesty beverages, desserts, and breakfasts. In some chapters in this book, the recipes are grouped by type of recipe; in the others, they are organized in the order of chile peppers’ spread around the globe: South and Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, U.S.A., Europe, the Mediterranean and Middle East, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and Asia and the Pacific. The book is truly the very best the world has to offer in terms of great spicy foods “When it comes to hellfire, no one can turn up the heat like Dave DeWitt.” —Steven Raichlen, author of Project Smoke
