So, is it a wonder that when these delicious and pompous birds reached the shores of Europe in the 16th century, thanks to the traders in West Indies and Spain, they were immediately added to exotic and popular fare. And since then, a turkey dinner, especially on Thanksgiving and on Christmas was soon a part of the social fabric. Turkeys may not be eaten as often as you eat chicken, but you can always have them for Turkey sandwiches. Turkish traders and merchants brought them to Europe by ship, and that is why the name “turkey” became synonymous with this unusually funny looking and self-important birds strutting about in your backyard. Once upon a time there were also called the Indian fowl. I was under the impression that that was because the Native Americans were called Indians at that time. They knew the value of this bird and hunted it regularly. That was until I found out that the “Indian” part of the name came from the European tendency of naming exotic birds, with the names of exotic lands. So the Catalans called it Gall d’inde and the French also called it Poulet d’inde meaning fowl from India. In Hebrew, it is called Tarnegol Hodu – rooster of India. And the irony is that in Turkey, it is called Hindi which means related to India! In reality, Indians of India did not know about this bird until the Britishers brought it to India for their turkey dinners in the late 18th and 19th century. But these are native birds living for millenniums in the North American continent. Wild turkeys also known to the first settlers as “gobblers” soon became a part of the dining table, and the Puritans must have been really surprised at such a show of pomp and colorful splendor in a gobbler.

This beautifully presented and highly acclaimed book puts the turkey back where it belongs and covers its illustrious history, the breeds, housing, equipment, breeding, feeding, development, ailments, legislation, sales, processing, dispatching for the table as well as keeping turkeys as pets. Many of the 200 photographs have been especially commissioned for the book and it more than demonstrates that the turkey, so often regarded as the Cinderella of the farm world, can play a significant role in increasing profits for the small-scale farm enterprise.

Book excerpt: Depending on your objectives and interests, raising turkeys can serve multiple functions. Here are a few reasons why individuals raise turkeys: - Food Production: Food production is one of the most common motivations for raising turkeys. Turkeys are a common source of poultry flesh, especially during Thanksgiving and other holidays. Raising your own turkeys can provide your family with a source of fresh, organic, and sustainable flesh. - Raising turkeys as part of a larger endeavor to become more self-sufficient is a further justification. It enables you to produce your own meat and reduce your reliance on poultry products sold commercially. - Numerous homesteaders rear turkeys as part of a diversified livestock enterprise. Turkeys can be incorporated into a small farm or homestead alongside poultry, ducks, and goats, contributing to a more self-sufficient way of life. - Especially for children, raising poultry can be an educational experience. They learn about animal husbandry, responsibility, and the life cycle. It's a chance to connect with nature and discover where their food originates from. - Some individuals raise heritage or uncommon breeds of turkeys in order to preserve genetic diversity and cultural traditions. Frequently, these varieties have distinctive characteristics and historical significance. - By breeding endangered or rare turkey breeds, you can contribute to their conservation. Breeding and nurturing these turkeys can assist in preserving genetic diversity and preventing the extinction of valuable heritage breeds. - Turkey feathers can be used for a variety of decorative and craft purposes, making them a valuable resource for artists and craft enthusiasts. - Some individuals keep turkeys as pets. Turkeys can be affable and sociable, and they can establish bonds with their human caregivers. - Turkey farming can be a source of income for individuals interested in agriculture or small-scale farming. You can sell turkeys, poultry products (such as eggs), and turkey-related items (feathers, crafts, etc.) directly to consumers or at local markets. - Turkeys can be engaging and sociable companion animals. Some individuals rear them for companionship and the pleasure of observing their antics. Prior to raising turkeys, it is essential to consider your objectives, the type of turkeys you wish to raise (meat, heritage, or ornamental breeds), and your available resources (space, time, knowledge, and equipment). For the health and well-being of turkeys, proper care, lodging, and nutrition are essential; therefore, it is essential to conduct research and plan accordingly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EXPAND AND MAINTAIN A HAPPY BACKYARD FLOCK Compared to other meats, turkey is relatively lean and nutritious. While often the meat of choice on Thanksgiving and Christmas, turkey is a versatile meat that can be eaten any time of the year. Many people are starting to raise their own turkeys. While raising turkeys does not require a lot of time each day, turkeys do require daily care. Before starting a flock of turkeys, it is important to identify your goal. This will dictate the best breed and management system for your flock. The types of turkeys often referred to as "breeds" are actually varieties of a single breed of turkey. The most common variety grown commercially is the Large White, but there are many other breeds of turkeys to choose from. Turkey poults (young turkeys one day old and older) are more difficult to get started than chicks. Poults need to be raised in a warm, draft-free environment because they are unable to regulate their body temperature for the first 10 days of life. In the brooding area, the temperature should be started at 100°F, measured two inches above the floor (that is, at the level of the poult). Reduce the temperature by 5°F each week. A red infrared heat lamp is best to supply the heat needed. The bulb should be suspended at least 18 in. above the floor. The height of the bulb can be adjusted as the temperature needs to change. Wood shavings are the best litter for turkeys. Do not use sawdust because poults may eat it and have digestive problems. The purpose of the litter is to absorb moisture and insulate poults from the cold floor. Any wet litter should be removed and replaced with fresh litter. Do not use newspapers or other slick materials on top of the litter. The paper will become slippery and can cause leg problems. A brooder guard should be used during the first week or two. The brooder guards keep the poults near heat, feed, and water. Feed and water should be available to the growing turkeys at all times. Some young turkeys have trouble finding the feed and water, resulting in death from "starve out." To ensure that your poults find the feed and water, it is best to spend some time with them for the first day or so. Dipping their beaks in the water helps to teach them where the water is located. Use a small one-gallon chick waterer. Open dishes or pans are not recommended because poults may fall in, get chilled, and die. Bright-colored marbles may help to attract the poults to the water. Whether the turkeys are for home consumption or for sale, you must make plans for processing, whether that is through home processing or custom processing.
