Book excerpt: One beautiful summer afternoon, Jody Linder receives shocking news: The man convicted of murdering her father is being released from prison and returning to the small town of Rose, Kansas. It has been twenty-three years since that stormy night when her father was shot and killed and her mother disappeared, presumed dead. Neither the protective embrace of Jody’s three uncles nor the safe haven of her grandparents’ ranch could erase the pain caused by Billy Crosby on that catastrophic night. Now Billy Crosby is free, thanks to the efforts of his son, Collin, a lawyer who has spent most of his life trying to prove his father’s innocence. Despite their long history of carefully avoiding each other in such an insular community, Jody and Collin find that they share an exclusive sense of loss. As Jody revisits old wounds, startling truths emerge about her family’s tragic past. But even through struggle and hardship, she still dares to hope for a better future—and maybe even love. BONUS: This edition contains a The Scent of Rain and Lightning discussion guide.

Book excerpt: She’s trained with him. She’s hunted with him. She’s killed with him. Now he’s missing. After the loss of her mother years ago, he is all she has left, and she will do whatever she can to find him. They had made a pact, a rule never to be broken: If we don't hear anything after three days, we investigate. Three days passed. Now Bethany must take all her years of training, all the skills she developed, and leave the place she’s called home her whole life. What begins as a simple search and rescue soon turns into a violent meandering through the darkest recesses of the Pacific Northwest underworld as Bethany pieces together cryptic clues from her father's journal. Far from everything and everyone she knows and loves, Bethany must navigate this realm of secrets and peril—and for the first time, she must do it alone. Every step brings her closer to the truth but closer to danger. This is the way of things when infernal cults and hellish fiends are involved. Vampires are not forgiving. Rain City Gothic is a story of devotion, betrayal, and redemption. It is a story of the human spirit and the lengths we will go to save the ones we love.

Book excerpt: When Jacob left home for a new life, he pretty much forgot all about Maryfield, North Carolina. But Maryfield never forgot him. Or forgave him. After a failed business venture in Boston, Jacob Logan comes back to the small Southern town of his childhood and takes up residence in the isolated house he grew up in. Here, the air is still. The nights are black. And his parents are buried close by. It should feel like home—but something is terribly wrong. Jacob loses all his belongings in a highway accident. His car is stolen from his driveway, yet he never hears a sound. The townspeople seem guarded and suspicious. And Carl, the property caretaker with so many secrets, is unnervingly accommodating. Then there are the fireflies that light the night skies . . . and die as they come near Jacob’s home. If it weren’t for the creaking sounds after dark, or the feeling that he is being watched, Jacob would feel so alone. He shouldn’t worry. He’s not. And whatever’s with him isn’t going to let him leave home ever again.

Book excerpt: A stranger’s arrival in a small Southern town stirs up old secrets in this “aching, absorbing, yet uplifting read” from the author of The Memory House (Booklist). Renowned yet private, thriller writer Hayden Winters lives a life colored by lies. As he is deeply ashamed of his past, his hunger for an honest relationship and dreams of starting a family remain unsatisfied, and he can trust no one with his secrets. He’s determined to outrun his personal demons, but the charming old Peach Orchard Inn and a woman whose presence is as gentle as a sparrow’s song stops him in his tracks. Carrie Riley is afraid of everything from flying to thunderstorms, and pretty much of life itself. But meeting the enigmatic writer staying at the inn emboldens her to learn everything about him. When they discover a vulnerable boy hiding at the inn, Hayden is compelled to help Carrie protect him. Soon they’re led to a centuries-old mystery that haunts Hayden’s sleep, and his only safe haven is Carrie. As the secrets of the past and present cause their lives to become entwined, all that’s left to come to light is love—if the grim truth doesn’t tear them apart first. “A beautiful tale . . . If you love a bit of mystery, small town stories and having a little hope you will enjoy The Rain Sparrow on a rainy day.” —Fresh Fiction

When friends from Dallas arrive in Edinburgh and introduce Isabel to Tom Bruce – a bigwig at home in Texas – several confounding situations unfurl at once. Tom’s young fiancée’s roving eye leads Isabel to believe that money may be the root of her love for Tom. But what, Isabel wonders, is the root of the interest Tom begins to show for Isabel herself? And she can’t forget about her niece, Cat, who’s busy falling for a man whom Isabel suspects of being an incorrigible mama’s boy. Of course Grace and Isabel’s friend Jamie counsel Isabel to stay out of all of it, but there are irresistible philosophical issues at stake – when to tell the truth and when to keep one’s mouth shut, to be precise – and philosophical issues are meat and drink to Isabel Dalhousie, editor of the Review of Applied Ethics. In any case, she’s certain of the ethical basis for a little sleuthing now and again – especially when the problems involve matters of the heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a dream coming true. Writing in English fulfils my purpose in life. To make dreams come true is an important aspect of my life, and I do believe, something that defines me. To me writing is more than just expression, it’s a duty I have to my readers, to the world. The Universe Within is a dream coming true, a dream you are a part of too. Thank you for reading me. Sara Vanessa C. Rodrigues da Silva From early age, I enjoy writing prose and poetry. My mom tells me that when I was turning three, I asked for a typing machine for my birthday. She asked me what for to which I replied “to write many books”. At that time, I didn’t even know how to write my name. In third grade, I wrote a dialogue between me and the sea that won a class contest. That day changed my life. I was sitting at my parents’ living room’s table and I felt inspiration running through me. Being acknowledged in my class as one of the best writers was my first great achievement in life. From that day on, I knew writing would be a part of my life forever. Ever since then, from being among friends during my teenagerhood, writing poems on a coffee shop’s napkin, to asking in restaurants for a piece of paper and a pen out of the blue, writing has been an intrinsic part of me. I started off by writing in my first language, then I switched to English. My passion for English runs deep. I would ask people around what their name was and how old they were, where have they been in English, and replied to them in English. No one could teach me how to speak, more than watch American movies and listen to American music. I remember that language in my ears sounded so well. As if it was known to me while I didn’t know it. In middle school I knew English better than everybody else, which made me proud of myself, but at the same time frustrated, because I wanted to learn much more. Movies and music made my delights, I had friends asking me to write down lyrics so they could sing songs along, asking me to help them out in English. I never had anyone to help me out, I had to learn it on my own, which to me has been one of my greatest accomplishments in life. I know that to achieve excellence in English is a long road, but that doesn’t worry me. My passion for it is too real to ever give it up, and it keeps me motivated to do better every day. I acknowledge my limitations for it not being my first language, however I know there’s always room for improvement. After studying Meteorology and working in the United States of America (my favorite country in the world) – my biggest accomplishment in life so far – I returned to the country where I am from. I felt desolated and misplaced. Words started coming to me, I sat down and wrote The Universe Within. Nothing else was of solace to me. I’ve put my heart and soul in it. The day I was accepted to publish it with Europe Books was a dream coming true. I will forever be thankful to Europe Books UK for giving me this chance. I will not disappoint them. Or you. Thank you for purchasing it. I appreciate it. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it and that somehow it tells you the words you need to read at that time you need them most. Blessings to you, my reader. Thank you.

Book excerpt: Set in Glasgow 2015. A man suddenly finds himself alone, but not for too long. Soon his attention is consumed by another woman - sublime, inspired, unknowable - and different, he feels, from those who came before her. His friend, arrogant and unencumbered, taunts him as they drift aimlessly from one hangover to the next amidst a landscape of uniform grey, pulsating lights and insipid rain. Between querulous despondency and abject nihilism - an attempt to capture the disquiet of the decade just past, striking at the heart of a contagious male despair.

Book excerpt: Digital Theatre is a rich and varied art form evolving between performing bodies gathered together in shared space and the ever-expanding flexible reach of the digital technology that shapes our world. This book explores live theatre performances which incorporate video projection, animation, motion capture and triggering, telematics and multisite performance, robotics, VR, and AR. Through examples from practitioners like George Coates, the Gertrude Stein Repertory Theatre, Troika Ranch, David Saltz, Mark Reaney, The Builder’s Association, and ArtGrid, a picture emerges of how and why digital technology can be used to effectively create theatre productions matching the storytelling and expressive needs of today’s artists and audiences. It also examines how theatre roles such as director, actor, playwright, costumes, and set are altered, and how ideas of body, place, and community are expanded.
