Book excerpt: The White Paper, 'Delivering a sustainable railway' (Cm. 7176, ISBN 9780101717625) published on July 2007 and set the Government's general vision for the railways for the next thirty years. Network Rail's engineering overruns at New Year 2008 caused tremendous inconvenience to passengers across the country and inevitably shaped the Committee's oral evidence sessions. The Committee's investigation, along with analyses from the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) have led them to believe that the engineering overruns are symptonatic of crucial system flaws which have to be resolved if there is to be any hope of getting a sustainable railway, as promised in the White Paper. This report covers both subjects

Book excerpt: High speed rail (HSR) is being touted as a strategic investment for connecting people across regions, while also fostering prosperity and smart urban growth. However, as its popularity increases, its implementation has become contentious with various parties contesting the validity of socioeconomic and environmental objectives put forward as justification for investment. High Speed Rail and Sustainability explores the environmental, economic and social effects of developing a HSR system, presenting new evaluations of the proposed system in California in the US as well as lessons from international experience. Drawing upon the accumulated experience from past HSR system development around the world, leading experts present a diverse set of perspectives as well as diverse contexts of implementation. Assessments of the California case as well as cases from Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Taiwan, China, and the UK show how governments and stakeholders have bridged the gap between the vision and the realities of connecting metropolitan regions through HSR. This is a valuable resource for academics, researchers and policy-makers in the areas of urban planning, civil engineering, transportation and environmental design.

Abstract: Abstract of Dissertation entitled "A Review of Sustainable Development for Railway in Hong Kong by Tsui Wai Tak for the degree of Master of Interdisciplinary Design (MIDM) at the University of Hong Kong in August 2006 Hong Kong is a world class city and centre for financial, trading and business with now nearly 700 million people in such a small place. Therefore, there will be many traffic demand generated by either the people living or working in this densely populated city. The transportation in Hong Kong must be sustainable enough to deal with traffic demand of different modes of transportation. The road based-transportations have found to be unsustainable, since there are too many traffic congestions and accidents. These all affect the efficiency of the productivity in Hong Kong, and the gases emitted from vehicles will increase the air pollution and green house effects. In view of the situation, the Government is now more relied on the use of railways as the backbone of passenger transport system. If one of the solutions leading to sustainable transportation is the better use of railway, we need to evaluate the railway performance in Hong Kong in terms of Sustainability by systematic approach. This dissertation will first review the theory of sustainability and follow by an overview of the development of railway in Hong Kong. Finally, evaluation on the largest railway operator in Hong Kong will be carried out by sustainability indicators. DOI: 10.5353/th_b3678904 Subjects: Railroads - China - Hong Kong

Book excerpt: The railway sector all over the world has changed dramatically in the last decade, in terms of economic restructuring as well as environmental and social issues. This review shows that, even though rail is in most respects the transport mode with the best environmental performance, the railways are by no means resting on their laurels. A common feature of the last decade's most successful initiatives in the rail sector, is the co-operation between stakeholders both inside and outside the sector. In the process, the railways have built on their advantages in energy efficiency, low emissions, safety, and the use of space, making mobility easier and more sustainable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of sustainability has grown in recognition and importance. The pressure on companies to broaden their reporting and accountability from economic performance for shareholders, to sustainability performance for all stakeholders is leading to a change of mindset in consumer behaviour and corporate policies. How can we develop prosperity without compromising the life and needs of future generations? Sustainability in Project Management explores and identifies the questions surrounding the integration of the concepts of sustainability in projects and project management and provides valuable guidance and insights. Sustainability relates to multiple perspectives, economical, environmental and social, but also to responsibility and accountability and values in terms of ethics, fairness and equality. The authors will inspire project managers to be aware of these considerations, and to apply them to the role they play in projects, not just 'doing things right' but 'doing the right things right'.

All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Railway and Sustainable Transport Development Submitted by Liu Ching Man for the degree of Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning at The University of Hong Kong in June 2005 The concept of sustainable development has been applied to different fields over the past decades. With growing public awareness, it has become a must to apply the concept of sustainable development in transport planning in Hong Kong. Hong Kong, as the Asia's World City, is dependent on an efficient transport system for her growth. With limited space and huge population, it has been a great challenge to build a transport system that can support Hong Kong's rapid development. The Hong Kong Government accords priority to railway in Hong Kong's public transport system because railway is environmentally friendly and is an efficient mass carrier. Since 2002, a number of new railways have been commissioned. However, in view of the dispute among different stakeholders and apparent poor return on railway investment in recent cases, doubts have arisen on how our society should invest in future railway projects and how to apply the concept of sustainable development in railway development in Hong Kong. This study first examined the concept of sustainable development in the field of transport. It then tried to establish a framework for sustainable railway devleopment in cities like Hong Kong. The framework then applied to two case studies, namely, the KCR Sheung Shui to Lok Ma Chau Spur Line and the KCR West Rail (Phase I) for setting some pointers for Hong Kong's future railway development. The study discussed some challenges of developing Hong Kong's railway in a sustainable manner and tried to provide some solutions. Other than academic literatures and journals, the study based also on various reports and papers of the Government, the Legislative Council and railway operators, newspaper articles, etc. DOI: 10.5353/th_b3159531 Subjects: Railroads - Environmental aspects - China - Hong Kong Railroads - China - Hong Kong - Planning Sustainable development - China - Hong Kong West Rail

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renaissance in railways and the formal recognition of environmental priorities are both features of the last quarter of the twentieth century, but relatively little has been published about the individual and collective environmental impacts of railways. There is an urgent need to address the subject comprehensively. New railways are being planned in many countries and environmental assessment has become an essential element of planning. Most of the impacts of railways have existed for well over a hundred years and many of these continue to be relevant today. Some new issues, such as the operation of very fast trains or the routeing of tracks to carry them, require special attention. This book brings together the main planning and management issues concerning the way railways, established, newly-constructed, or upgraded, have an impact on the environment. It provides a step-by-step assessment of how the engineer, planner, environmental manager, transport specialist or railway operator should approach the resolution of railway development taking into account environmental priorities and the regulatory framework. Tom Carpenter brings a lifetime of first-hand management and consultancy experience to produce the first modern treatment of this important topic. Contents I. Railways and Planning Introduction Environmental planning Railway planning Passenger traffic Freight II. Impacts on People Social impacts and public perception Noise and vibration Pollution Visual impacts Construction III. Impacts on Resources Resource use and route selection Residential, commercial and productive land Nature conservation Heritage and amenity Railways in scenic landscape Environmental evaluation of land resources IV.Planning for the Twenty-first Century Environmental rail transport solutions

They will be useful for researchers in developing countries looking for opportunities of knowledge exchange. The RailExchange project aimed to develop sustainable railway education in Thailand, via international partnerships and industry collaborations based around stakeholders' expertise and experiences. It involved staff exchange (academics and researchers) between Mahidol and Newcastle University for joint research and curriculum development and also organizing railway conferences and workshops in both Thailand and the UK. The papers published here focus on rail-related issues and present a perspective of a widely understood 'exchange' in academia and industry environments. 'Exchange' is perceived as rail knowledge exchange between partners, rail staff exchange between academia and/or industry, research exchange between teams, student-lecturer knowledge exchange, academia-industry collaboration, etc. In addition, more general rail-related papers are also included.
