Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Possibility of the Development of High Speed Train between Hong Kong and Mainland China" Submitted by Wong Wing Sum Angela for the Degree of Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning at The University of Hong Kong in June 2005 Cross boundary passenger and freight traffic is forecast to increase significantly in the years ahead as Hong Kong's economy becomes even more closely interconnected with that of the Mainland, particularly the adjoining Guangdong Province. According to the Railway Development Strategy 2000 (RDS-2), the Regional Express Line (REL) was recommended and mapped out as one of the preferred railway network expansion plan. The REL is an express rail service which will link the urban area with the Boundary. In this thesis, the possibility of the development of high speed train between Hong Kong and Mainland China is discussed. It only focuses on the development and the possible routing on the Hong Kong side. A detailed discussion of the reasons that prompt the Hong Kong Government to look into the feasibility of development a High Speed Cross-boundary Railway System. I realize that there are lots of factors that favor the undertaking of this project, however, in the thesis, I only focus on a number of selected reasons that I feel are the most significant. To support my stand for the developing the railway, I have done a study of the boundary traffic growth pattern of Hong Kong in the past 10 years and the forecast of future passenger flows between the boundaries. The study of growth pattern indicates that there is a real demand for a railway line. Furthermore, I would give quotations and other supporting evidence that this railway project is very in line with the government policy and the economic development of the region. After we have identified the aspects that support the development of a railway network, our next step will be to decide on the most appropriate route for the railway network. Comparisons of the two routings were made based on the different criteria such as accessibility, development potential, engineering, level of service, planning environment etc. I would like to conclude that as long as we are within budget, the difference in engineering technique required in the project would not be too much a problem. Environmental impact would also be minimized through proper supervision by the authority. After dismissing these two criteria, the "development potential," which I feel is the most influential. This is one aspect that can dictate facets like accessibility, total rail ridership and value for money. However, if other criteria are to be considered as well, the outcome maybe different, for example, Mainland China development plan, Hong Kong government policy like the selection of spatial development pattern for future development. Book Synopsis Cities in Transition by : Rita Schneider-Sliwa
Download or read book Cities in Transition written by Rita Schneider-Sliwa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-23 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written with the aim of showing that even in the era of globalization developments appearing in cities are not subject to almost unconditional global forces. Rather, universal forces are decisive eventualities in the process of urban restructuring, often influencing its course and speed, yet developments and particularities within a city strongly influence the course of events and the extent to which negative characteristics of globalization might occur. Berlin, Brussels, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Jerusalem, Johannesburg, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sarajevo and Vienna: Using these important cities the special relationship between global and local/regional forces is analyzed. The case studies were selected based on their political and cultural context and the fact that their social and political fabric was subject to major changes in the recent past. How global processes manifest themselves locally depends to a great extent on how development processes and endogenic potentials are initiated locally in order to cope with the new global economic and societal conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Border clearance processes by customs and other agencies are among the most important and problematic links in the global supply chain. Delays and costs at the border undermine a country’s competitiveness, either by taxing imported inputs with deadweight inefficiencies or by adding costs and reducing the competitiveness of exports. This book provides a practical guide to assist policy makers, administrators, and border management professionals with information and advice on how to improve border management systems, procedures, and institutions.
Download or read book Making Hong Kong written by Pui-yin Ho and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful book provides a comprehensive survey of urban development in Hong Kong since 1841. Pui-yin Ho explores the ways in which the social, economic and political environments of different eras have influenced the city's development. From colonial governance, wartime experiences, high density development and adjustments before and after 1997 through contemporary challenges, this book explores forward-looking ideas that urban planning can offer to lead the city in the future. Evaluating the relationship between town planning and social change, this book looks at how a local Hong Kong identity emerged in the face of conflict and compromise between Chinese and European cultures. In doing so, it brings a fresh perspective to urban research, providing historical context and direction for the future development of the city. Hong Kong's urban development experience offers not only a model for other Chinese cities but also a better understanding of Asian cities more broadly. Urban studies scholars will find this an exemplary case study of a developing urban landscape. Town planners and architects will also benefit from reading this comprehensive book as it shows how Hong Kong can be taken to the next stage of urban development and modernisation.
Book Synopsis China's High-Speed Rail Development by : Martha Lawrence
Download or read book China's High-Speed Rail Development written by Martha Lawrence and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, China has built 25,000 km of dedicated highspeed railway—more than the rest of the world combined. What can we learn from this remarkable experience? China’s High-Speed Rail Development examines the Chinese experience to draw lessons for countries considering investing in high-speed rail. The report scrutinizes the planning and delivery mechanisms that enabled the rapid construction of the high-speed rail system. It highlights the role of long-term planning, consistent plan execution, and a joint venture structure that ensures active participation of provincial and local governments in project planning and financing. Traffic on China’s high-speed trains has grown to 1.7 billion passengers a year. The study examines the characteristics of the markets for which high-speed rail is competitive in China. It discusses the pricing and service design considerations that go into making high-speed rail services competitive with other modes and factors such as good urban connectivity that make the service attractive to customers. One of the most remarkable aspects of the Chinese experience is the rapid pace of high-quality construction. The report looks at the role of strong capacity development within and cooperation among China Railway Corporation, rail manufacturers, universities, research institutions, laboratories, and engineering centers that allowed for rapid technological advancement and localization of technology. It describes the project delivery structures and incentives for delivering quality and timely results. Finally, the report analyzes the financial and economic sustainability of the investment in high-speed rail. It finds that a developing country can price high-speed rail services affordably and still achieve financial viability, but this requires very high passenger density. Economic viability similarly depends on high passenger density.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary volume, the first of its kind, presents an account of China’s contemporary transformation via one of its most important yet overlooked cities: Shenzhen, located just north of Hong Kong. In recent decades, Shenzhen has transformed from an experimental site for economic reform into a dominant city at the crossroads of the global economy. The first of China’s special economic zones, Shenzhen is today a UNESCO City of Design and the hub of China’s emerging technology industries. Bringing China studies into dialogue with urban studies, the contributors explore how the post-Mao Chinese appropriation of capitalist logic led to a dramatic remodeling of the Chinese city and collective life in China today. These essays show how urban villages and informal institutions enabled social transformation through cases of public health, labor, architecture, gender, politics, education, and more. Offering scholars and general readers alike an unprecedented look at one of the world’s most dynamic metropolises, this collective history uses the urban case study to explore critical problems and possibilities relevant for modern-day China and beyond.
