Book excerpt: Everything, Always, Everywhere' is a book made in close collaboration with the artist Rafaël Rozendaal. Rozendaal's body of work is much broader than his well-known websites, and spans across different media; from the digital to physical and the textual. All these manifestations have one thing in common: they stem from a fascination with moving images and interactivity in its most basic form. The digital is the starting point for all Rozendaal's work, even his physical work stems from a digital way of thinking. 'Everything, Always, Everywhere', reflects on the change that his work has undergone in recent years; looking at both his own evolution as an artist, and the technological progress that has influenced digital art in general. How can the artist play with the ever-growing range of digital possibilities?

Book excerpt: INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE FINALIST • From the award-winning, internationally bestselling Spanish author of A Heart So White comes an immersive, provocative novel propelled by a seemingly random murder. "Sometimes startling, sometimes hilarious, and always intelligent ... Marías [has] a penetrating empathy."—The New York Times Book Review Each day before work María Dolz stops at the same café. There she finds herself drawn to a couple who is also there every morning. Observing their seemingly perfect life helps her escape the listlessness of her own. But when the man is brutally murdered and María approaches the widow to offer her condolences, what began as mere observation turns into an increasingly complicated entanglement. Invited into the widow's home, she meets—and falls in love with—a man who sheds disturbing new light on the crime. As María recounts this story, we are given a murder mystery brilliantly encased in a metaphysical enquiry, a novel that grapples with questions of love and death, chance and coincidence, and above all, with the slippery essence of the truth and how it is told.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a psychedelically drawn, boldly political retelling of the 1950s graphic novel The Eternaut, whose imagery is still used as a symbol of resistance in Latin America to this day. The 1950s version of The Eternaut, a seminal Argentine work, is drawn in F. Solano Lopez’s clean, orderly comics art style. In the 1969 reboot, the darker tone is reflected in Breccia's Expressionist art. In The Eternaut 1969, the great world powers have forsaken South America to alien invaders, and POV character Juan Salvo, along with his friend Professor Favalli, metalworker Franco, and neighbor Susanna, join the resistance in Buenos Aires with the knowledge that the outside world will not come to their aid. Through the lenses of these timeless characters, the politically prescient creators ask readers to consider the implications of global domination by the "great powers" before it’s too late.

Book excerpt: Leading scholars take a wider view of new media, placing it in the context of art history and acknowledging the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach in new media art studies and practice. Digital art has become a major contemporary art form, but it has yet to achieve acceptance from mainstream cultural institutions; it is rarely collected, and seldom included in the study of art history or other academic disciplines. In MediaArtHistories, leading scholars seek to change this. They take a wider view of media art, placing it against the backdrop of art history. Their essays demonstrate that today's media art cannot be understood by technological details alone; it cannot be understood without its history, and it must be understood in proximity to other disciplines—film, cultural and media studies, computer science, philosophy, and sciences dealing with images. Contributors trace the evolution of digital art, from thirteenth-century Islamic mechanical devices and eighteenth-century phantasmagoria, magic lanterns, and other multimedia illusions, to Marcel Duchamp's inventions and 1960s kinetic and op art. They reexamine and redefine key media art theory terms—machine, media, exhibition—and consider the blurred dividing lines between art products and consumer products and between art images and science images. Finally, MediaArtHistories offers an approach for an interdisciplinary, expanded image science, which needs the "trained eye" of art history. Contributors Rudlof Arnheim, Andreas Broeckmann, Ron Burnett, Edmond Couchot, Sean Cubitt, Dieter Daniels, Felice Frankel, Oliver Grau, Erkki Huhtamo, Douglas Kahn, Ryszard W. Kluszczynski, Machiko Kusahara, Timothy Lenoir, Lev Manovich, W.J.T. Mitchell, Gunalan Nadarajan, Christiane Paul, Louise Poissant, Edward A. Shanken, Barbara Maria Stafford, and Peter Weibel

Through Aracelis Girmay's lens, everything is animal: the sea, a jukebox, the desert. In these poems, everything possesses a system of desire, hunger, a set of teeth, and language. These are poems about what is both difficult and beautiful about our time here on earth. Aracelis Girmay's debut collection won the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award. A Cave Canem Fellow, she is on the faculty at Drew University and Hampshire College. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Book excerpt: Of course: an interior constitutes a comfort zone. But when we zoom in closer on this interior, we can see how thighs are shifting on seats, how hands are caressing arms, how people snuggle up against the back of their chairs and how their feet curl around the legs. It is obvious: sitting is a physical pleasure: sitting is intimate. Could sitting even be driven by desire? And: what is the chair's role in all of this? Artist Margriet Craens and designer Lucas Maassen are not just intimate with each other. They also wondered to what extend chairs might get intimate, reflecting on the various chairs lucas Maassen had previously brought to life, letting them do yoga and having them sing or act in a comedy. Together they made a photo series of chairs that were involved with each other the way a person might get involved with their intimate partner (chair or person). Each chair (or person) has a particular character, which can sometimes lead to unsuspected combinations. Theatre-maker and actor Twan van Bragt, friend on a strictly amicable basis and a neutral party as such, has provided this intimacy with the necessary facts and fictions, which serve as captions to accompany the pictures.
