Book excerpt: In the past several years, the rapid development of sophisticated imaging modalities has made radiology the fastest growing specialty in medicine. It is important for the radiologic technologist to keep pace with technology's advancements. The influx of freestanding outpatient facilities and the demands of insurance companies, HMOs and third party reimbursement have brought about change. Medical facilities have begun to call upon nurses, surgical technicians, and other non-radiologic personnel to assist with patient positioning during surgical procedures requiring imaging-creating a need for a concise, how-to guide to performing surgical procedures. The Radiology Technologist's Handbook to Surgical Procedures provides a quick reference for using fluoroscopic and x-ray equipment during surgical procedures. This book includes detailed descriptions and photographs taken in actual clinical settings. By using this manual as a foundation, the radiologic technologist will be able to master many of the operating room x-ray procedures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a state of the art overview of tools for guiding surgeons in the modern operating room. The text explains how many modalities in the current armamentarium of radiologic imaging have been brought to the operating room for real time use. It also explains the current use of near infrared, fluorescent, and chemo-luminescent imaging to guide minimally invasive and open surgery to improve outcome. The book is separated into two sections. The first, discusses the biologic principles that underlie novel visualization of normal organs and pathology. The currently available equipment and equipment anticipated in the near future is covered. The second section summarizes current clinical applications of advanced imaging and visualization in the OR. Novel means of visualizing normal anatomic structures such as nerves, bile duct, and vessels that enhance safety of many operations are covered. Novel biologic imaging using radio-labeled and fluorescent-labeled molecular probes that allow identification of inflammation, vascular abnormalities, and cancer are also discussed. Authored by scientists who pioneer research in optics and radiology, tool makers who use this knowledge to make surgical equipment, and surgeons who innovate the field of surgery using these new operative tools, Imaging and Visualization in the Modern Operating Room is a valuable guide for surgeons, residents and fellows entering the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compilation, the authors begin with a focus on the indications for surgery in hepatocarcinoma and how to perform a liver resection. Long-term outcomes and different theories on the causes of recurrence after resection are also discussed. Most patients with hepatocarcinoma have underlying chronic liver disease and are thus at high risk for development of postoperative complications, which can sometimes be fatal. The authors propose that we may be able to prolong the overall survival of patients by using laparoscopic liver resection as a powerful local therapy, which can be applied repeatedly with minimal deterioration of liver function.Bronchoscopy has become an important procedure for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, particularly in the context of lung cancer. As such, the medical and surgical advances in bronchoscopy are described herein.Post-operative pancreatic fistula is one of the most dreaded complications in any pancreatic operation given its associated morbidity and mortality. This collection examines how the amylase-rich fluid can cause inflammation, become infected, or cause serious bleeding from neighboring vasculature. The authors go on to discuss cystic fibrosis, the most common life-threatening autosomal recessive disorder affecting Caucasians. The indications of endoscopic sinus surgery in cystic fibrosis patients are discussed, drawing from personal experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cystic fibrosis-related sinus disorders.Following this, the origins of functional sinus surgery as it relates to the evolution of functional endoscopic sinus surgery and minimally invasive sinus technique are discussed. The rationale for our departure from Messerklingers functional concepts is also analyzed.Additionally, endoscopic sinus surgery complications should be distinguished in minor and major based on the treatment they need and the permanent sequelae they can cause. Over the years, the incidence of complications in endoscopic surgery has gone from 8% for the major and 21% for the minor to a percentage of 0 -1.5% and 1.1 - 20.8%, respectively.Sphenoid sinus is very close to important and vulnerable structures of the skull base and therefore a delayed diagnosis and treatment can be lethal. Thus, the authors provide a review of classification of transsphenoidal skull base approaches and show the main transnasal corridors to the sphenoid sinus based on the anatomical sphenoidal target and extension of pathology.Lastly, a synopsis of the pathophysiology of post-craniotomy temporomandibular dysfunction and a practical approach to its evaluation and treatment is provided. Several surgical procedures can be used to perform craniotomy, such as the classical pterional, pre-temporal and other fronto-temporal approaches. However, they are all based on the dissection of the temporal muscle, which can lead to a variety of negative side effects.

Book excerpt: This companion to Clark's Positioning in Radiography focuses on special imaging procedures and the different modalities and contrast media studies which are used in the modern imaging department. Bringing together all specialized procedures into one volume, it is the essential source of information for all radiography staff when faced with specialized investigations. The book adopts a systematic approach and is designed to be a clear and comprehensive reference text. Each chapter is highly illustrated and contains sections detailing anatomy and physiology, including common variants, and an overview of recommended imaging procedures. Both conventional and cross-sectional procedures are described, giving details for each procedure on indications/contraindications, position of patient, imaging modality, imaging procedure, contrast media and injection data, and image analysis. Important information is provided on the parameters which affect image production and quality for each of the modalities described in the book. It is ideal for use by radiographers in the clinical environment and also as a teaching/studying resource at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Book excerpt: Intraoperative imaging technologies have taken an ever-increasing role in the daily practice of neurosurgeons and the increasing attention and interest necessitated international interaction and collaboration. The Intraoperative Imaging Society was formed in 2007. This book brings together highlights from the second meeting of the Intraoperative Imaging Society, which took place in Istanbul-Turkey from June 14 to 17, 2009. Included within the contents of the book is an overview of the emergence and development of the intraoperative imaging technology as well as a glimpse on where the technology is heading. This is followed by in detail coverage of intraoperative MRI technology and sections on intraoperative CT and ultrasonography. There are also sections on multimodality integration, intraoperative robotics and other intraoperative technologies. We believe that this book will provide an up-to date and comprehensive general overview of the current intraoperative imaging technology as well as detailed discussions on individual techniques and clinical results.
