Book Synopsis Radioecological Concentration Processes by : Bertil Åberg
Download or read book Radioecological Concentration Processes written by Bertil Åberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 1056 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioecological Concentration Processes present the overall model for problems of environmental contamination in terms of system analysis. This book discusses the major investigational approaches to study of environmental contamination with radioactivity. Organized into 90 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the results of the experimental investigations into the distribution of strontium in soils and the uptake of this nuclide by plants. This text then presents the comparison of the distribution character in different soil types, which shows clearly that ploughed soils differ from virgin soils by a more uniform and similar character of radioisotope distribution in them. Other chapters consider the migration of 90Sr in the mostly podzolic and water-logged soils of moderately northern latitudes of Russia. The final chapter deals with the experiments with the shore crab Carcinus maenas, which shows that the crab is able to regulate the zinc content of its body against changes in the zinc content of food or of surrounding water. Biochemists will find this book useful.
Book Synopsis Nordic Radioecology by : H. Dahlgaard
Download or read book Nordic Radioecology written by H. Dahlgaard and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1994-10-11 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present treatise is the final milestone in the radioecology programme, RAD, carried out from 1990 to 1993 under the Nordic Committee for Nuclear Safety Research, NKS. The book, one of the few in its field to have achieved international publication, is centred on the contamination of Nordic environments with radionuclides from the Chernobyl accident. It contains 30 contributions mainly describing the flow of radiocaesium through aquatic, agricultural, forest, and alpine ecosystems, as well as quality assurance and doses to man. A series of original papers on various aspects of Nordic post-Chernobyl radioecology by leading Nordic scientists is also included, along with terms & units definitions, indexes, and an executive summary. The volume will be invaluable to all scientists and professionals in radioecology, radiation protection, trace element cycling and environmental contamination. It will also be relevant to general evironmental management/human contamination/civil defence officials.
Book Synopsis Analysis of Ecological Systems: State-of-the-Art in Ecological Modelling by : W.K. Lauenroth
Download or read book Analysis of Ecological Systems: State-of-the-Art in Ecological Modelling written by W.K. Lauenroth and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 995 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Society for Ecological Modelling (ISEM) sponsors conferences, workshops and training courses with the aim of advancing the development of ecological and environmental modelling. The 3rd International Conference on the state-of-the-art in ecological modelling was sponsored by the ISEM in cooperation with the National Park Service Water Resources Laboratory and hosted by the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University. Its theme was the application of ecological modelling to environmental management and this book contains the full texts of the three invited papers presented in the five general sessions, plus the final summaries and syntheses of the topics covered during those sessions.

This book was released on 1986-02-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores how the scientific tools of ecology can be used more effectively in dealing with a variety of complex environmental problems. Part I discusses the usefulness of such ecological knowledge as population dynamics and interactions, community ecology, life histories, and the impact of various materials and energy sources on the environment. Part II contains 13 original and instructive case studies pertaining to the biological side of environmental problems, which Nature described as "carefully chosen and extremely interesting."

Book Synopsis Radioecology and the Restoration of Radioactive-Contaminated Sites by : F.F. Luykx
Download or read book Radioecology and the Restoration of Radioactive-Contaminated Sites written by F.F. Luykx and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the nuclear facilities built since the Second World War have ceased active operation and have been decommissioned. Some of the sites are heavily contaminated with radioactive substances. Correct and efficient action to mitigate the radiological consequences of such contamination will only be possible when the behaviour of radionuclides in the terrestrial environment is sufficiently well known. Yet radioecologists often find it difficult to study the transfer of radioactivity in agricultural land and semi-natural ecosystems, because of the complexity and diversity of such environments. The present book presents an analysis of all the factors that affect the behaviour of radionuclides as they move from their point of release through the environment and then enter the tissues of biota living in the ecosystems, in particular plants and animals consumed by humans. The course on which the book is based was held in a region that is heavily contaminated by radioactive discharges into the environment during nuclear weapons fabrication in the 1950s and '60s, and due to a severe accidental release following the explosion of a rad-waste tank in 1957. This allowed in situ training of the students. The book's main emphasis is on specific radioecological problems in severely contaminated areas in the former Soviet Union: the Southern Urals Trail, the rivers Techa-Isert-Tobol-Irtis-Ob, and the 30 km zone around Chernobyl. Systems examined include soils, arable and pasture land, forests, lakes and rivers. Special attention is paid to the effects of radiation on natural ecosystems: trees, soil-dwelling organisms, and aquatic organisms. Synergistic effects are also considered. Short, medium and long term countermeasures are discussed.
