Book Synopsis Nadezhda Krupskaya and the New View of Radical Society in Russia by : M. A. Iasilli
Download or read book Nadezhda Krupskaya and the New View of Radical Society in Russia written by M. A. Iasilli and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian Revolution is typically studied from a perspective of power and authority. The shadow of Communism tends to portray the revolutionary character of 1917 as an ominous path toward totalitarianism. While the revolutionary story has been overshadowed by the authoritarianism of Stalinist regimes, the Revolution has much more complex underpinnings that tie back to the nineteenth century Russian populist movement and the women who were drawn into it. Nadezhda Krupskaya and the New View of Radical Society in Russia reexamines the fundamental ideas and moments that led to the revolution and its eventual bureaucratization from the perspective of Nadezhda Krupskaya, Vladimir Lenin’s wife. Her involvement provides a new perspective in how we should consider the role of culture as opposed to ideology, particularly the subordination of Communism, as well as the women in Soviet politics. M.A. Iasilli provides a nuanced view of the Russian Revolution that demonstrates a Bolshevik legacy and connection with their populist ancestors, the Narodniks, and argues that the revolution wasn’t merely Marxist fanaticism but something much deeper and emotional.
Download or read book Radical Conduct written by Mark Philp and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the French Revolution drew immense attention to French radicals and their ideas, London also played host to a radical intellectual culture. Drawing on both original material and a range of interdisciplinary insights, Radical Conduct transforms our understanding of the literary radicalism of London at the time of the French Revolution. It offers new accounts of people's understanding of and relationship to politics, their sense of the boundaries of privacy, their practices of sociability, friendship, gossip and discussion, the relations between radical men and women, and their location in a wider world of sound and movement in the period. It reveals a series of tensions between many radicals' deliberative practices and aspirations and the conventions and practices in which their behaviour remained embedded. Exploring these relationships and pressures reveals the fractured world of London society and politics, dramatically illuminating both the changing fortunes of radical men and women, and the intriguing uncertainties that drove some of the government's repressive policies.

Book Synopsis The Curatorial by : Jean-Paul Martinon
Download or read book The Curatorial written by Jean-Paul Martinon and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stop curating! And think what curating is all about. This book starts from this simple premise: thinking the activity of curating. To do that, it distinguishes between 'curating' and 'the curatorial'. If 'curating' is a gamut of professional practices for setting up exhibitions, then 'the curatorial' explores what takes place on the stage set up, both intentionally and unintentionally, by the curator. It therefore refers not to the staging of an event, but to the event of knowledge itself. In order to start thinking about curating, this book takes a new approach to the topic. Instead of relying on conventional art historical narratives (for example, identifying the moments when artistic and curatorial practices merged or when the global curator-author was first identified), this book puts forward a multiplicity of perspectives that go from the anecdotal to the theoretical and from the personal to the philosophical. These perspectives allow for a fresh reflection on curating, one in which, suddenly, curating becomes an activity that implicates us all (artists, curators, and viewers), not just as passive recipients, but as active members. As such, the Curatorial is a book without compromise: it asks us to think again, fight against sweeping art historical generalizations, the sedimentation of ideas and the draw of the sound bite. Curating will not stop, but at least with this book it can begin to allow itself to be challenged by some of the most complex and ethics-driven thought of our times.
Book Synopsis Non-Philosophy, Social Action, and Performance by : Yvanka Raynova

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue of Labyrith is the first part of a diptych dedicated to the eminent French philosopher François Laruelle in honor of his 80th Anniversary. It aims to unveil the attracting force of Laruelle's non-philosophy for artists and scholars from different disciplines. The essays demonstrates in an emblematic way how a new "democratic order of thinking" permits non-philosophy to enclose domains that have long been considered as opposites - philosophy, science, religion and the arts - and to superpose these variables in a process of creative invention. The issue includes an original dialogue between François Laruelle and Anne Françoise Schmid, an inteview with Laruelle's translator into English Anthony Paul Smith conducted by Mark W. Westmoreland, and articles by Yvanka B. Raynova, Constance L. Mui, Julien S. Murphy, Katerina Kolozova, Adam Louis Klein, Nicholas Eppert, Laura Cull Ó Maoilearca, Gilbert Kieffer, Benoît Maire, and Anne-Françoise Schmid.
Book Synopsis Recovering the Social Contract by : Ron Replogle
Download or read book Recovering the Social Contract written by Ron Replogle and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1989 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author defends a novel philosophical thesis about the nature and foundation of moral rights. The thesis maintains that rights-claims derive their credibility from a distinctive idea of equality according to which persons are not just equally valuable but equally invaluable. The egalitarian ideal derives its normative content from widely acknowledged norms of competence that are distinguishable from and conceptually prior to the norms of rationality and morality that have exercised contemporary theorists of rational choice and justice. When its nature and foundation are appreciated, rights-based justice can be seen to be more powerful and, in an important sense, less ideological than alternative conceptions. In defending this view, the author considers how ideology corrupts thinking about justice and maintains that contemporary theorists are ideological in a sense that disqualifies them from setting credible normative standards.

Book Synopsis She Who Imagines by : Laurie Cassidy
Download or read book She Who Imagines written by Laurie Cassidy and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea and ideal of "beauty" has been used to oppress women of different ages, body types, skin color, and physical ability. The theoretical discussion of aesthetics has also been conditioned by these same dynamics of power and oppression. In She Who Imagines, a diverse set of scholars challenges the exclusion and false definitions while constructing capacious ideas that discover beauty in unexpected places. In these essays, the authors draw on a variety of arts media-painting, photography, portraiture, craftwork, poetry, and hip-hop music-thereby joining beauty to truth and, in a richly defining way, to the practice of justice. In a variety of ways all the essays link women's definitions of beauty with experiences of suffering and hence with the yearning for justice. All clearly prize resistance to degradation as an essential element of thought.

Book Synopsis Reality and Mystical Experience by : F. Samuel Brainard
Download or read book Reality and Mystical Experience written by F. Samuel Brainard and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to our modern disillusionment with any claims to absolute truth regarding morality or reality, this book offers a conceptual approach for discussing absolutes without denying either the relevance of divergent religious and philosophical teachings or the evidence supporting postmodern and poststructuralist critiques. Case studies of mysticism within Advaita-Vedānta Hinduism, Mādhyamika Buddhism, and Nicene Christianity demonstrate the value of this approach and offer many fresh insights into the metaphysical presuppositions of these religions as well as into the nature and value of mystical experience. Like Douglas Hofstadter's Gōdel, Escher, Bach, this book finds ultimate reality to be rationally graspable only as an eternal fugue of pattern and paradox. Yet it does not so much counter other philosophical views as provide a conceptual tool for understanding and classifying incommensurable views.
