Book excerpt: Two independent studies were conducted under this contract: (1) Radiation hardening of compressively strengthened optical fibers; (2) Development of new fluoride glasses. In the first study two preform fabrication processes based on phase separable, leachable alkali borosilicate glasses were evaluated for producing radiation hardened fibers. The first process, known as partial leaching, was found to yield low numerical aperture fibers with moderately high attenuation. Ultra-clean glass melting facilities and extensive composition studies would be required to correct these faults. This was beyond the resources of the contract. The second process, known as molecular stuffing, was used to produce alkali-modified high silica glasses doped with cerium oxide as a radiation hardening agent. Radiation damage kinetic tests were run on these glasses by irradiating the samples with 4-40 ns pulses of 15 MeV electrons and observing the absorption spectra for the time range 0.0000001 sec to 0.1 sec following the electron pulses. The results of these tests show that cerium is not effective, within the time range studies, in suppressing the radiation induced absorption for the high silica glasses tested. In the second study, under this contract, glasses in the HfF4-BaF2-LaF3 family were studied. The effects on glass forming of additions including PbF2, CsF, GdF3 and AlF3 glass was studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluoride Glass Fiber Optics reviews the fundamental aspects of fluoride glasses. This book is divided into nine chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the wide range of fluoride glasses with an emphasis on fluorozirconate-based compositions. The structure of simple fluoride systems, such as BaF2 binary glass is elaborated in Chapter 2. The third chapter covers the intrinsic transparency of fluoride glasses from the UV to the IR, with particular emphasis on the multiphonon edge and electronic edge. The next three chapters are devoted to ultra-low loss optical fibers, reviewing methods for purifying and analyzing the fluoride glass raw materials. The sources of loss are considered in Chapter 6, while the work performed on the durability of fluoride glasses is analyzed in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 focuses on the effects of radiation on fluoride glasses. The last chapter deliberates the area of active phenomena such as doping of fluoride glasses with rare-earth elements for fluorescence and lasing, as well as frequency doubling. This publication is a good reference for students and researchers conducting work on fluoride glasses.

Book excerpt: One of the most exciting prospects for optical fibres made from fluoride glasses is the possibility of providing long distance optical communication systems without the need for repeaters. This objective has stimulated much of the work into fluoride glasses over the past ten years, and has prompted the writing of this book. It has also emerged that fluoride fibres can transmit both visible and infrared energy (from about 0.5 to 5 ,urn) and that they have many applications outside the field of telecommunications. These include optical fibre sensors (particularly in remote infrared spectroscopy), laser surgery and fibre lasers. Several companies are now established in the field, and good quality fluoride fibres are available from sources throughout the USA, Europe and Japan. Moreover, the first commercial instruments based on fluoride fibres are finding their way to the market place and these fibres will undoubtedly form the basis of many more instruments yet to be developed. The work presented in this book represents the field both from an academic understanding of the materials and ways to convert them into fibre, and from a practical and commercial viewpoint. The principal author and some of the co authors are based at the British Telecom Research Laboratories in the UK.

Optical fibers, doped with arsenic under different redox conditions were prepared. Arsenic additions under slightly reducing conditions lowered the fiber radiation sensitivity, without influencing the intrinsic optical loss. This observation proved that arsenic can be used to improve optical fiber radiation hardening if optimized processing conditions are used. Further, development effort is needed to determine the effect of different parameters on radiation response. The parameters include, dopants and dopant levels, redox and fiber drawing conditions. Keywords include: Radiation hardness, Arsenic doping, Optical fiber, Optical waveguides, Cerium doping, Radiation damages, Redox condition, and Glass.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new optical fibers capable to operate in the deep-ultraviolet (DUV, 200-300 nm) and the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV, 120-200 nm) would benefit to laser technologies, microlithography techniques (increased spatial resolution) and elemental chemical sensing applications (phosphorous and sulfur sensing in agriculture). The only well-established UV-transmitting fiber existing to date consists in high-OH/fluorine doped silica glass core/clad fibers. However, the utilization of such fibers is limited by solarisation effect that degrades the UV-light transmission with long time exposition. Mixed fluoride-phosphate (FP) glasses with ultra-low content of impurities can be VUV- and/or DUV-transmitting materials, offering thus an alternative to the commercialized high-OH/fluorine doped silica fibers. These glasses are produced by mixing fluorides and polyphosphates to combine their properties as excellent glass-forming ability, low refractive index and broad optical transmission windows ranging from ~160 to 4000 nm. Also, when doped with trivalent rare-earth (RE) ions, the low phonon fluorine environment is favorable for RE high quantum efficiencies, making then suitable for photonic application in the form of fiber and/or bulk glass. Firstly, highly pure FP glasses were prepared and utilized to fabricate step-index optical fibers, by a modified crucible technique. In a first step, the bulk glasses were studied to be highly transparent in the VUV region, down to 160 nm, and the characteristics temperatures, viscosity around softening point were characterized. Then, the fibers were fabricated by the crucible technique, drawing the as-made core-cladding preforms in a silica crucible assembly. While uncontrolled crystallization was observed during the fiber drawing by the conventional method, drawing from a fused silica crucible showed to be suitable to obtain crystal-free FP glass fibers. Additionally, the cut-back method was employed to measure the optical attenuation on the FP step-index and single index glass fibers. The second part of this thesis involves the network structural investigation of a series of FP glasses with different fluoride/phosphate ratio. Raman and multinuclear solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies were used to study the polyphosphate network transformation for the different fluoride/phosphate ratios. In the next step 27Al/31P double resonance techniques were used to quantify the average number of P-O-Al linkages in the glasses and the local environment of fluoride species were also determined. Then, the glasses were doped with RE ions and the local environment was characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of Yb3+ ions probe and by photoluminescence experiments on Eu3+ dopant ions. The luminescence properties were correlated with the structural transformation as a function of composition. Lastly, due to the high UV tansparency of the FP glasses, we prepared FP glasses doped with Gd3+, Tm3+, and Yb3+ ions as a potential candidate for fabrication of UV fiber lasers. The photoluminescence properties under 980 nm diode laser excitation were studied, and the effect of fluoride/phosphate ratio in the glasses in the Gd3+ UV upconversion (UC) emission were verified. The effect of Gd3+ content in the UV UC emission was also studied. Then, by using 45Sc/31P double resonance technique, utilizing scandium as a diamagnetic mimic for the luminescent RE species, the ligand distribution surrounding the RE ions were quantified, and the efficiency of the Gd3+ emission, compared to the Tm3+ ions with structure was done.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes results obtained under Phase I SBIR program aimed at developing new techniques for fabricating long lengths of heavy metal fluoride glass (HMFG) optical fiber. A new method for overcladding conventional HMFG performs with a low melting oxide glass was developed, and improvements in the rotational casting method were made to increase preform length. The resulting composite glass canes consist of a fluoride glass overcoat layer to enhance strength and chemical durability. To show feasibility, prototype optical fiber preforms up to 1.6 cm in diameter with lengths of 22 cm were fabricated. These were drawn into optical fibers with lengths up to 900 meters. Keywords: Fluoride, Fibers.

A rotational casting technique associated with the fabrication of a new dry glove box have been developed in order to prepare tube and then core-clad preform. The glass BIZYT based ion indium and barium essentially can be shaped as a tube without crystallization. Attempts for core-clad preform design indicate a tendency of crystallites formation at the core-clad interface. Contamination of the glass by transition metals and viscosity measurements are in a early stage of investigation. Keywords: Fluoride glasses; Optical fiber; Preform preparation; Rotational casting; Transition metal impurities; Viscosity.
