Download or read book Radiation Effects on Fiber Optics written by James A. Wall (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samples representative of most of the optical fibers presently available in lengths of 10 m or more were tested for their responses to energetic radiation. Glass fibers doped with three different levels of cesium were also prepared and tested. Permanent and transient x-radiation effects tests were performed. Neutron effects tests were performed. All of the fibers tested showed decreases in transmission when exposed to radiation. All of the fibers emitted fluorescent light pulses when exposed to intense x-ray pulses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this dissertation, the effects of radiation (gamma, neutron or mixed gamma and neutron) on optical fiber sensors are studied and new techniques for real-time measurement of radiation-induced macroscopic changes in optical fibers are presented. It is crucial among the research and development efforts in the nuclear energy field to conduct experiments in Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) to support lifetime extension, novel fuels and materials development, better fuel management, and enhanced safety of existing as well as future nuclear power plants (NPP). Due to their unparalleled and unique advantages over traditional sensors, optical fiber sensors are deemed potential candidates for their use in nuclear environments. However, optical fibers are susceptible to high levels of ionizing radiation emitted by fission reactors which are characterized by the highest levels of gamma dose, high flux of neutrons and potentially high temperatures depending on location in a reactor core. It is essential to accurately determine the information related to physical parameters such as temperature, pressure, and strain in nuclear environments for the safety of the existing and future NPPs."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.
Book Synopsis Fiber Optic Data Bus Radiation Effects Study by :
Download or read book Fiber Optic Data Bus Radiation Effects Study written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes a study of radiation effects in components of a proposed fiber optic data bus for space, including models of the natural radiation environment. This test procedure outlines methods for measuring both the steady state response of optical fibers and cables exposed to continuous radiation and the transient response of optical fibers and cables exposed to a pulse of radiation. It can be used to determine the level of radiation-induced attenuation produced in single-mode or multimode optical fibers, in either cabled or uncabled form.
