Download or read book Nuba & Latuka written by Aaron Schuman and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic series by legendary Magnum photographer George Rodger introduced the Western world to the Nuba peoples of Sudan. In 1949 the photographer and co-founder of Magnum Photos, George Rodger, learned of the Nuba tribe while traveling in the Kordofan region of the Sudan. Remarkably, he was granted permission by the Sudanese government to take pictures of these striking people, who lived as their ancestors had centuries before. After publication in National Geographic magazine, these pictures--as well as Rodger's fascinating journal entries from the shoot--have not been available to the wider public. Now, Rodger's rare softly colored Kodachrome images are gathered in a sumptuous volume, and introduced in an essay by photographer Chris Steele-Perkins. Beautifully reproduced, Rodger's photographs emphasize the muted colors of the Sudanese landscape as well as the Nuba's penchant for vivid body paint, clothing, and jewelry. They are a superb example of early color photography, and a stunning celebration of a little-known tribe that lives in one of the world's harshest environments.
Book Synopsis Chinese Art and Dynastic Time by : Wu Hung
Download or read book Chinese Art and Dynastic Time written by Wu Hung and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping look at Chinese art across the millennia that upends traditional perspectives and offers new pathways for art history Throughout Chinese history, dynastic time—the organization of history through the lens of successive dynasties—has been the dominant mode of narrating the story of Chinese art, even though there has been little examination of this concept in discourse and practice until now. Chinese Art and Dynastic Time uncovers how the development of Chinese art was described in its original cultural, sociopolitical, and artistic contexts, and how these narratives were interwoven with contemporaneous artistic creation. In doing so, leading art historian Wu Hung opens up new pathways for the consideration of not only Chinese art, but also the whole of art history. Wu Hung brings together ten case studies, ranging from the third millennium BCE to the early twentieth century CE, and spanning ritual and religious art, painting, sculpture, the built environment, and popular art in order to examine the deep-rooted patterns in the historical conceptualization of Chinese art. Elucidating the changing notions of dynastic time in various contexts, he also challenges the preoccupation with this concept as the default mode in art historical writing. This critical investigation of dynastic time thus constitutes an essential foundation to pursue new narrative and interpretative frameworks in thinking about art history. Remarkable for the sweep and scope of its arguments and lucid style, Chinese Art and Dynastic Time probes the roots of the collective imagination in Chinese art and frees us from long-held perspectives on how this art should be understood. Download or read book Verrocchio written by John K. Delaney and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey of the work of this most influential Florentine artist and teacher Andrea del Verrocchio (c. 1435–1488) was one of the most versatile and inventive artists of the Italian Renaissance. He created art across media, from his spectacular sculptures and paintings to his work in goldsmithing, architecture, and engineering. His expressive, confident drawings provide a key point of contact between sculpture and painting. He led a vibrant workshop where he taught young artists who later became some of the greatest painters of the period, including Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, Lorenzo di Credi, and Domenico Ghirlandaio. This beautifully illustrated book presents a comprehensive survey of Verrocchio's art, spanning his entire career and featuring some fifty sculptures, paintings, and drawings, in addition to works he created with his students. Through incisive scholarly essays, in-depth catalog entries, and breathtaking illustrations, this volume draws on the latest research in art history to show why Verrocchio was one of the most innovative and influential of all Florentine artists. Download or read book The Kimono in Print written by Vivian Li and published by Brill Hotei. This book was released on 2020 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kimono in Print: 300 Years of Japanese Design will be the first ever publication devoted to examining the kimono as a major source of inspiration, and later vehicle for experimentation, in Japanese print design and culture from the Edo period (1603-1868) to the Meiji period (1868-1912). Print artists, through the wide circulation of prints, have documented the ever-evolving trends in fashion, have popularized certain styles of dress, and have even been known to have designed kimonos. Some famous print designers also were directly involved in the kimono business as designers of kimono pattern books, such as Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671-1751) and Okumura Masanobu (1686-1764). The dialogue between fashion and print is illustrated here by approximately 70 Japanese prints and illustrated books--by Nishikawa Sukenobu, Suzuki Harunobu, Utagawa Kunisada, Kikukawa Eizan, and Kamisaka Sekka, among others. The group of five essays features new research and scholarship by an international group of leading scholars working today at the intersection of the Japanese print and kimono worlds and the social, cultural, and global significances circulated therein.

Book Synopsis The Life of Animals in Japanese Art by : Robert T. Singer
Download or read book The Life of Animals in Japanese Art written by Robert T. Singer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping exploration of animals in Japanese art and culture across sixteen centuries Few countries have devoted as much artistic energy to the depiction of animal life as Japan. Drawing upon the country’s unique spiritual heritage, rich literary traditions, and currents in popular culture, Japanese artists have long expressed admiration for animals in sculpture, painting, lacquerwork, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and woodblock prints. Real and fantastic creatures are meticulously and beautifully rendered, often with humor and whimsy. This beautiful book celebrates this diverse range of work, from ancient fifth-century clay sculpture to contemporary pieces. The catalog is organized into themes, including the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac; animals in Shinto and Buddhism; animals and samurai; land animals, winged creatures, and creatures of the river and sea; and animals in works of humor and parody. Contributors address such issues as how animals are represented in Japanese folklore, myth, religion, poetry, literature, and drama; the practice of Japanese painting; and the relationship between Japanese painters and scientific study. Featuring some 300 masterpieces from public and private collections, many published for the first time, The Life of Animals in Japanese Art is a sumptuous celebration of the connections between the natural world and visual and creative expression. Download or read book Hunter Barnes: Off the Strip written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographer Hunter Barnes (born 1977) has an extraordinary ability to document aspects of culture and communities ignored by the mainstream and often misrepresented in the modern American narrative. In this most recent work, he explores the Las Vegas that was. These photographs celebrate the old Vegas, the people who shaped the town in its heyday. Not much of it remains, but here are the people and landmarks that endure today--that represent the life "Off the Strip." Hunter's powerful portraits remember those in "the greatest town you could live in [where] the spirit of old Las Vegas still remains." In his early twenties, Barnes self-published his first book, Redneck Roundup, documenting the dying communities of the Old West. Other projects followed: four years spent with the Nez Perce tribe; months with a serpent handling congregation in the Appalachian mountains; bikers, lowriders, and street gangs; inmates in California State Prison. Intense, true pockets and sub-cultures of America. Barnes shoots exclusively on film, the pace of analogue in harmony with his approach. Fundamental to his work is the journey, the people, the place--and committing them to film before they are greatly changed or gone forever.
Download or read book Matrimania written by Gita Aravamudan and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All that is great about a country and all that is wrong with it can be summarised by a single wedding, says Indian photographer Mahesh Shantaram (*1977) and member of Agence VU'. In his documentary work, he mostly studies the complex societal system of his home country. Working as a wedding photographer, he had privileged access to a cross-section of celebrations of the Indian upper- and middle-class society. Young adults assume the role of princes and princesses in a Bollywood-like fantasy often choreographed by their parents. On the periphery, a multitude of workers entertain crowds, cater to thousands of guests, and keep the show going on for days. Using images culled from over 150 weddings and created in the course of six years, the photo series Matrimania constructs a fictional narrative--an alternative wedding album--that depicts one long wedding night in India. Matrimania is a personal take on 21st century India's contradictions seen through the prism of its wedding culture.
Download or read book Bernhard Fuchs written by Bernhard Fuchs and published by Walther Konig Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After his monograph Autos, Bernhard Fuchs has chosen to focus on landscapes for his new art book. They all have one thing in common - they show a street, a road, a path used by people. They lead somewhere, seemingly away from civilisation, yet right to the middle of the civilising aspect of landscape. With these photographs Bernard Fuchs, a student of Becher, has again managed to incorporate wit and irony in his otherwise impressively precise compositions. English text.

Book excerpt: In 1966, Mario Carnicelli won first place in an Italian national photography competition sponsored by Popular Photography magazine and Mamiya and Pentax. The prize was a scholarship to photograph America. Carnicelli was fascinated by the almost reckless freedom offered by America, with its mix of cultures and traditions, its fashion and individuality; while at the same time he was aware of a pervading loneliness and rootlessness in people separated from family and clan. This beautiful book features over 150 colour and black and white images of America in the 1960s.
