Book Synopsis Dino Buzzati and Anglo-American Culture by : Valentina Polcini
Download or read book Dino Buzzati and Anglo-American Culture written by Valentina Polcini and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the relationship between Dino Buzzati’s fiction and Anglo-American culture by focusing on his re-use of visual texts (Arthur Rackham’s illustrations), narrative sources (Joseph Conrad’s novels), and topoi belonging to such genres as the seafaring tale, the ghost story and the Christmas story. Tracing Buzzati’s recurring theme of the loss of imagination, Dino Buzzati and Anglo-American Culture shows that, far from being a mere imitator, he carries on an original and conscious reworking of pre-existing literary motifs. Especially through the adoption of intertextual strategies, Buzzati laments the lack of an imaginative urge in contemporary society and attempts a recovery of the fantastic imagery of his models. Alongside a reconsideration of Buzzati’s intertextuality, this book offers new insights into Buzzati’s fantastic fiction, by highlighting its playful and ironic component as opposed to the more overtly pervading sense of gloominess and nostalgia. Furthermore, while filling a gap in the critical study of Buzzati in the English-speaking world, the book contributes towards a general reassessment of an author who, although regarded as minor for many years, can rightly be ranked among the masters of twentieth-century fantastic literature.
Book Synopsis The Reception of Charles Dickens in Europe by : Michael Hollington
Download or read book The Reception of Charles Dickens in Europe written by Michael Hollington and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reception of Charles Dickens in Europe offers a full historical survey of Dickens's reception in all the major European countries and many of the smaller ones, filling a major gap in Dickens scholarship, which has by and large neglected Dickens's fortunes in Europe, and his impact on major European authors and movements. Essays by leading international critics and translators give full attention to cultural changes and fashions, such as the decline of Dickens's fortunes at the end of the nineteenth century in the period of Naturalism and Aestheticism, and the subsequent upswing in the period of Modernism, in part as a consequence of the rise of film in the era of Chaplin and Eisenstein. It will also offer accounts of Dickens's reception in periods of political upheaval and revolution such as during the communist era in Eastern Europe or under fascism in Germany and Italy in particular.
Book Synopsis Interjections, Translation, and Translanguaging by : Rosanna Masiola
Download or read book Interjections, Translation, and Translanguaging written by Rosanna Masiola and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about interjections and their transcultural issues. Challenging the marginalization of the past, the ubiquity of interjections and translational practices are presented in their multilingual and cross-cultural aspects. The survey widens the field of inquiry to a multi-genre and context-based perspective. The quanti-qualitative corpus has been processed on the base of topics of relevance and thematization. The range of examples varies from adaptation of novels into films, from Shakespeare, from Zulu oral epics to opera, from children’s narratives to cartoons, from migration literature to gangster and horror films and their audiovisual translation. The use of American Yiddish, Italian American, South African English, and Jamaican account for the controversial aspects of interjections as a universal phenomenon, and, conversely, as a pragmatic marker of identity in (post)colonial contexts.

Book Synopsis Cesare Zavattini’s Neo-realism and the Afterlife of an Idea by : David Brancaleone

This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many Zavattinis are there? During a life spanning most of the twentieth century, the screenwriter who wrote Sciuscià, Bicycle Thieves, Miracle in Milan, and Umberto D. was also a pioneering magazine publisher in 1930s Milan, a public intellectual, a theorist, a tireless campaigner for change within the film industry, a man of letters, a painter and a poet. This intellectual biography is built on the premise that in order to understand Zavattini's idea of cinema and his legacy of ethical and political cinema (including guerrilla cinema), we must also tease out the multi-faceted strands of his interventions and their interplay over time. The book is for general readers, students and film historians, and anyone with an interest in cinema and its fate.

Book Synopsis Gender, Narrative, and Dissonance in the Modern Italian Novel by : Silvia Valisa
Download or read book Gender, Narrative, and Dissonance in the Modern Italian Novel written by Silvia Valisa and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining close textual readings with a broad theoretical perspective, Gender, Narrative, and Dissonance in the Modern Italian Novel is a study of the ways in which gender shapes the principal characters and narratives of seven important Italian novels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from Alessandro Manzoni’s I promessi sposi (1827) to Elsa Morante’s Aracoeli (1982). Silvia Valisa’s innovative approach focuses on the tensions between the characters and the gender ideologies that surround them, and the ways in which this dissonance exposes the ideological and epistemological structures of the modern novel. A provocative account of the intersection between gender, narrative, and epistemology that draws on the work of Georg Lukács, Barbara Spackman, and Teresa de Lauretis, this volume offers an intriguing new approach to investigating the nature of fiction.

Book Synopsis If Eight Hours Seem Too Few by : Elda Gentili Zappi
Download or read book If Eight Hours Seem Too Few written by Elda Gentili Zappi and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1991-07-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to present a vivid and accurate picture of the thousands of women who worked weeding the rice fields in northern Italy during the early part of the nineteenth century. It explores a wide range of issues including the political, economic, and social history of Italy; labor legislation; the role of the judicial system; the sexual division of labor; family structure; class conflict between the rural proletariat and the politically influential capitalist farmers; work-related diseases; internal migration of labor; and child labor. The author provides penetrating insights into the Socialist Party's efforts to wrest women workers from the influence of the Catholic Church; the history of Italian feminism and the campaign for the vote; and finally, the workers' opposition to Italy's entrance into World War I. She analyzes the weeders' relations with labor organizers; their desire to preserve their autonomy; and their decisions regarding labor actions; and she highlights similarities between the weeders' experiences and those of other women workers and labor organizers in Europe and the U. S..
