Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis-Marie Houdebine and Jianglin Fan The study of biological functions of proteins and their possible roles in the pathogenesis of human diseases requires more and more relevant animal m- els. Although mice including genetically modified mice offer many possibilities, other non-murine species are absolutely required in some circumstances. Rabbit is one of these species, which has been widely used in biomedical studies. This animal is genetically and physiologically closer to humans including cardiov- cular system and metabolism characteristics. Rabbit is thus more appropriate than mice to study some diseases such as atherosclerosis and lipid metabolism. Because of its larger size, surgery manipulation, bleeding, and turn-over studies are much easier performed in rabbits than in mice. Furthermore, transgenic rabbits can be produced using microinjection and other methods such as lentiviral v- tors. Cloning in rabbits has been proved possible, even though still laborious and time-consuming. Hopefully, functional rabbit ES cell lines will be available in the coming years. Gene deletion or knock-out in rabbits will then become possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biology of the Laboratory Rabbit is a compendium of papers that discusses the use of the rabbit as an experimental substrate in the scientific process. The collection describes normative biology, research utilization, and rabbit disease. These papers emphasize naturally occurring diseases which affect the value of the rabbit as a research tool. Some papers describe these effects and their impact for investigators engaged in laboratory experimental work on animal medicine. Other papers tackle the value of certain rabbit diseases as models of considerable interest in comparative medicine. Several papers discuss bacterial diseases, viral diseases, protozoal diseases, arthropod parasites, helminth parasites, neoplastic diseases, inherited diseases, nutritional diseases, metabolic, traumatic, mycotic, and miscellaneous diseases of the rabbit. One paper describes a number of diseases that man can acquire from domestic and laboratory rabbits. These include tularemia (which is endemic in wild rabbits and hares), plague (transmitted by fleas), listeriosis (rare in laboratory rabbit colonies), salmonellosis (from rabbit feces), and Pasteurella multocida (common in laboratory and domestic rabbits). The paper notes that laboratory and domestic rabbits are not a major health hazard. The compendium can benefit veterinarians, the medically-oriented investigator, the biologist, the medical and chemical researcher, and others whose work involve laboratory animal care.

Book excerpt: After nearly 20 years, the publication of this Second Edition of The Biology of the Laboratory Rabbit attests to its popularity within the scientific community as well as to the need to update an expanding database on the rabbit as a major species in laboratory investigation. The principal aim of this text is to provide a comprehensive and authoritative source of scientifically based information on a major laboratory animal species. The text continues to emphasize the normal biology as well as diseases of the European (domestic) rabbit, Orytolagus cuniculus, especially the New Zealand White breed, with occasional reference to other rabbit species (Sylvilagus sp.) and hares (Lepus sp.). New topics have been added to this second edition in response to changing trends in biomedical research and product testing as well as to suggestions from readers. New chapters included on: Anesthesia and analgesia Models in infectious disease research Models in ophthalmology and vision research Polyclonal antibody production Toxicity and safety testing Drug doses and clinical reference data

Understanding their genetics and genomics is key to their production and, equally, to their care, welfare and health. Beginning with an introduction to the rabbit, including key information on their evolution, domestication and breed types, this book then concentrates on the genetics and genomics of this valuable animal. Concluding with practical applications such as creating transgenic and genome edited rabbits, biotechnical applications and the rabbit as a biomedical model, this book brings this important topic fully up-to-date. It provides an indispensable resource for animal and veterinary researchers and students, as well as rabbit breeders and laboratory scientists.

These exciting prospects are accompanied by considerable unease, however, about matters such as safety and ethics. This book identifies science-based and policy-related concerns about animal biotechnologyâ€"key issues that must be resolved before the new breakthroughs can reach their potential. The book includes a short history of the field and provides understandable definitions of terms like cloning. Looking at technologies on the near horizon, the authors discuss what we know and what we fear about their effectsâ€"the inadvertent release of dangerous microorganisms, the safety of products derived from biotechnology, the impact of genetically engineered animals on their environment. In addition to these concerns, the book explores animal welfare concerns, and our societal and institutional capacity to manage and regulate the technology and its products. This accessible volume will be important to everyone interested in the implications of the use of animal biotechnology.

Book excerpt: Biotechnology is a highly multidisciplinary subject and has got its foundation in many fields including biology, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, chemistry and chemical and processing engineering. Application of biotechnology in medicine and agriculture has been a recent phenomenon. Modern biotechnological processes now encompass a wide range of new products including antibiotics, recombinant and nucleic acid vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, recombinant therapeutic products like recombinant insulin, growth hormones, prolactin and gene therapy, production of transgenic animals and plants and use of embryo biotechnological methods and stem cells to augment animal production and human therapy, respectively. Animal biotechnology is in its infancy and only during the past ten years, much work has been done in animal biotechnology in few isolated laboratories throughout the world. There is an increasing need to train manpower in animal biotechnology. Even though many colleges are offering courses in Biotechnology for the students, there is no single text book available covering all the aspects of animal biotechnology for the students. This book on Animal Biotechnology has been written to meet out the requirements of both undergraduate and postgraduate students on the subject of biotechnology. There are seventeen chapters in this book covering different aspects of animal biotechnology including enzyme technology, gene therapy, biotechnology in medicine, Intellectual Property Rights and biosafety in biotechnology. Many up-to-date references on most of the topics have been included so that it would be a reference book for postgraduate students studying biotechnology and molecular biology. This would be a useful book for students who are writing competitive examinations for fellowship. With my extensive experience in teaching and research in Animal Biotechnology I have compiled this book to provide students the basic principles of animal biotechnology, current information on different topics of biotechnology, as well as information on Intellectual Property Rights and biosafety guidelines to be adopted in the laboratories.
