Book Synopsis In Quest of the Historical Pharisees by : Jacob Neusner
Download or read book In Quest of the Historical Pharisees written by Jacob Neusner and published by Baylor University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work sketches the many portraits of the Pharisees that emerge from ancient sources. Based upon the Gospels, the writings of Paul, Josephus, the Mishnah, the Tosefta, and archeology, the volume profiles the Pharisees and explores the relationship between the Pharisees and the Judaic religious system foreshadowed by the library of Qumran. A great virtue of this study is that no attempt is made to homogenize the distinct pictures or reconstruct a singular account of the Pharisees; instead, by carefully considering the sources, the chapters allow different pictures of the Pharisees to stand side by side.

Book Synopsis Traditions of the Rabbis from the Era of the New Testament, Vol. 2A by : David Instone-Brewer
Download or read book Traditions of the Rabbis from the Era of the New Testament, Vol. 2A written by David Instone-Brewer and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditions of the Rabbis from the Era of the New Testament (TRENT) is a major new six-volume work of scholarship that provides an exhaustive collection of early rabbinic traditions and commentary on their relevance to the New Testament. Focusing on 63 rabbinic traditions central to ancient Jewish life, David Instone-Brewer's massive study provides significant insights into Jewish thought and practice prior to the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. For each rabbinic tradition considered, the supporting Hebrew source text is provided side by side with an English translation. Instone-Brewer also presents evidence that exists for accurately dating these rabbinic sources -- a critical task recently advanced by modern dating techniques. He goes on to thoroughly discuss the meaning and importance of each rabbinic tradition for Second Temple Judaism, also analyzing any echoes or direct appearances of the tradition in the New Testament writings.
Book Synopsis The Anecdote in Mark, the Classical World and the Rabbis by : Marion Moeser
Download or read book The Anecdote in Mark, the Classical World and the Rabbis written by Marion Moeser and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2002-12-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major study of a Markan genre, represented in the central section 8.27-10.4, ranges through Greek, rabbinic and early Christian literature, providing detailed comparison with the anecdotes in Lucian's Demonax and the Mishnah.Moeser concludes that the Markan anecdotes clearly follow the definition of, and typologies for, the Greek chreia. His analysis indicates that while the content of the three sets of anecdotes is peculiar to its respective cultural setting, the Greek, Jewish and Christian examples all function according to the purposes of the genre.
