In the wake of Charles's death, Dr. Chervin set out to discover some of the most basic - but all too often misunderstood - answers to why God allows us to suffer, and how we can bear it with perseverance and hope. She shares her discoveries in these pages, helping you understand that while there is no escape from pain, pain itself is the road into the heart of Christ where peace can be found. You'll be given encouragement and practical advice as you explore afflictions such as failure, fear, frustration, loneliness, loss, marital problems, physical pain, fatigue, and temptation. Dr. Chervin explains each affliction in detail and offers reflections on the lives of saints who suffered from the very same cross. Throughout each chapter you're given practical suggestions on how you can meet Christ in your particular pain. You'll draw wisdom from the lives and writings of saints who were addicted, depressed, exhausted, raped, and unhappily married. And among these saints, you'll discover within their responses a pattern that you can ponder and imitate. Avoiding Bitterness in Suffering will bring courage and hope that in Christ and in communion with his saints, you can - and will - triumph over every kind of adversity. You'll also learn: How you can overcome the pain associated with loneliness and isolationFive ways to overcome doubts about the FaithFour steps to liberation from the suffering of indecisionFive ways to meet Christ in the suffering of exploitationWhat St. Benedict teaches us about failure - and how it changed the worldHow to cope with failure and povertyFive ways you can transform fear into trust in ChristHow you can turn frustrations and anger into a Christian spiritHow you can respond in a holy way to marital discord, demanding spouses, physical abuse, psychological abuse, abandonment, and rageFour ways you can turn to Christ in times of temptation
Book Synopsis Practical and Inspirational Guidelines for Winning by : J. David Irwin
Download or read book Practical and Inspirational Guidelines for Winning written by J. David Irwin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a compilation of lessons learned over a lifetime of study in the school of hard knocks through a wide spectrum of activities that range from family interactions on the one hand to complex business/professional involvements on the other. As a result, numerous personal examples, coupled with biblically and spiritually based inspirational material, are provided that serve to illustrate the ideas and concepts that have been applied to achieve a winning outcome in these environments. Within the context of this book, winning refers to the attainment of a successful outcome, regardless of the context, and although many of the concepts and ideas discussed will be confined primarily to the interpersonal relationships among individuals and presented in the framework of a business or family environment, they are also applicable when dealing with members of a civic organization, a church group, a professional organization, or any other group where people interact or work together for some common goal. Although the achievement of successful personal interactions in any endeavor can be difficult and the optimum path unknown, when the effort is systematically performed in concert with Almighty God, winning can become a way of life.
Book Synopsis Mere Catholicism by : Daniel Agatino
Download or read book Mere Catholicism written by Daniel Agatino and published by Sunbury Press, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-12-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Author: C. S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity is the obvious inspiration for the title of this book. In that book, Lewis uses the example of a person standing in a hall that is lined on both sides by rooms: Each room represents a different Christian tradition. He wanted to get readers into the hallway and let them choose for themselves whether to enter Christianity by the door of Anglicanism, Catholicism, and so forth. Mere Christianity brilliantly focuses on what essentially all Christians agree upon; namely the Creed, the canon of the New Testament, etc. However, many of the great controversies between Protestants and Catholics are purposely not discussed. There were ecumenical reasons for avoiding topics like papal primacy, purgatory, Marian devotions, and so forth. But, by avoiding these sorts of topics, Mere Christianity can be read as Mere Protestantism. I wrote Mere Catholicism to address some of those missing topics. Even though I am both intellectually and emotionally convinced of the truth of Catholic Christianity, I am indebted to C. S. Lewis (an Anglican) for helping me better understand how Christianity offers the most compelling raison d’être. His work and I hope my own is an exploration of “faith seeking understanding,” to quote St. Anselm of Canterbury. Contents: PrefaceIntroduction: Christianity in the Third Millennium1. Book Synopsis Reaching for Heaven by : Michael Amodei
Download or read book Reaching for Heaven written by Michael Amodei and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2024-02-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As you grow older, you’ll find that life takes on a new rhythm, one where you can shed the responsibilities that once consumed your days. The hours at work and the bustling activities of parenthood or other vocations have now transformed into something different—a fresh chapter of life, filled with new opportunities for reflection and growth. It’s your time to pivot and focus on how God will judge your life and how to make a final push for getting to heaven. Through personal stories, humor, and practical advice, Michael Amodei—a lifelong Catholic with a deep devotion to the Virgin Mary and the University of Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish—shares fourteen practices to help enrich your spirituality as you strive for heaven. In Reaching for Heaven, seasoned book editor Michael Amodei shares what older Catholics need to hear to make the most of their time. “This book is a kind of wake-up call,” he writes, “a chance to become a better Catholic so that when we face that one-on-one with Jesus, we don’t have to fear what is coming.” He contends that even a small investment in time and energy thinking about your golden years can have a rich payoff as you remember the past, act in the present, and plan for the future. He builds on his own spiritually rich memories—including his view from the fifty-yard line at Notre Dame Stadium—to show how you can invent your own life plan by selecting from spiritual habits and practices that have formed and strengthened Catholics for centuries. By creating both short- and long-term goals, you can cultivate a deeper prayer life by praying the Liturgy of the Hours; get more out of scripture by taking a class or participating in a group Bible study; make a pilgrimage to a holy site or shrine (Amodei recommends the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto either in France or at the University of Notre Dame); correct past wrongs and heal past injuries not only by apologizing to someone you’ve hurt but also by making amends; strengthen family bonds by writing notes to tell family members what you appreciate about them; and draw closer to Mary by consecrating yourself to her. He guides you to use the power of memory to shape your understanding of who God is and who you truly are by putting what you learn into practice incrementally over time to achieve the optimal plan for meeting Jesus face to face. This plan can lead you towards Judgment Day with confidence, knowing that you’ve lived a life dedicated to love, service, and spiritual growth. The book includes questions for reflection. It is an excellent resource for personal or small-group study. Additional resources are also available online.
