It is a resist technique in which fabric is manipulated before it is dyed or discharged (bleached) to produce wonderful textural designs for use in quilting, clothing, decorating, or anywhere fabric is found. The most common resist techniques involve stitching, folding, clamping, pleating, binding, tying, compressing, and wrapping. These methods were used to design fabrics before the invention of roller printing, and these types of designs can still be seen today in shibori and mud-cloth fabrics. The book covers fiber-reactive and indigo dyes and bleach discharge designs. Three projects, with explicit instructions, introduce the reader to the fascinating world of fabric manipulation and dyeing.

Book excerpt: These stunning quilts from award-winning designer J. Michelle Watts were inspired by the timeless motifs of the American Southwest. The influences of culture, landscape, color, and design come together to play a key role in the creation of this imaginative collection of quilt designs. Concise instructions and abundant step-by-step illustrations make the projects easy for everyone to follow. The intricate and seemingly complicated pieced designs require only one or two very simple and familiar piecing techniques. The applique designs can by made with the popular quick-fusing technique. The book features pieced and appliqued projects. Many of the designs are presented in different sizes and colorways. Quilters can choose between the rich and subtle color schemes of the desert landscape and alternative schemes in bright, vibrant colors. The quilts are accompanied by sumptuous photographs of the traditional and contemporary pottery, jewelry, and woven textiles that inspired the designs. The featured project, Midnight in Santa Fe, is a medallion-style quilt. It is actually five projects in one, depending on how many of the borders are included in the finished quilt.

Book excerpt: The renowned Ohio quilt artist draws on places and objects in her daily life to craft beautiful modern quilts, encouraging your own creative journey. For Heather Jones, inspiration can be anywhere. For her debut book, Quilt Local, she designed a collection of twenty quilts, each inspired by objects and places close to home—country roads, cityscapes, street signs—the landscape of her existence. Then, in a fascinating exercise in color theory and design play, she reworked each one in a second palette to show what a striking difference just a few basic changes can make. Pattern by pattern, Jones takes readers behind the scenes of her process, sharing photographs of her sources of inspiration, sketchbook pages, and the finished quilts. In addition, she offers an accessible lesson in color theory as it applies to quiltmaking. “Jones, founder of the Cincinnati Modern Quilt Guild, translates architecture into quilt patterns that have ‘a strong visual component’ . . . The simplicity of her designs is well suited for beginners, while the modern aesthetic will attract more experienced quilters.” —Publishers Weekly “The author takes quilters inside her studio for a firsthand look at her process for designing and piecing . . . Modern quilters who enjoy a minimalist style are likely familiar with Jones’s work and will appreciate the insights into her process. The presentation is reminiscent of Denyse Schmidt’s Modern Quilts, Traditional Inspiration.” —Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2022 James F. Sulzby Book Award from the Alabama Historical Association Alabama Quilts: Wilderness through World War II, 1682–1950 is a look at the quilts of the state from before Alabama was part of the Mississippi Territory through the Second World War—a period of 268 years. The quilts are examined for their cultural context—that is, within the community and time in which they were made, the lives of the makers, and the events for which they were made. Starting as far back as 1682, with a fragment that research indicates could possibly be the oldest quilt in America, the volume covers quilting in Alabama up through 1950. There are seven sections in the book to represent each time period of quilting in Alabama, and each section discusses the particular factors that influenced the appearance of the quilts, such as migration and population patterns, socioeconomic conditions, political climate, lifestyle paradigms, and historic events. Interwoven in this narrative are the stories of individuals associated with certain quilts, as recorded on quilt documentation forms. The book also includes over 265 beautiful photographs of the quilts and their intricate details. To make this book possible, authors Mary Elizabeth Johnson Huff and Carole Ann King worked with libraries, historic homes, museums, and quilt guilds around the state of Alabama, spending days on formal quilt documentation, while also holding lectures across the state and informal “quilt sharings.” The efforts of the authors involved so many community people—from historians, preservationists, librarians, textile historians, local historians, museum curators, and genealogists to quilt guild members, quilt shop owners, and quilt owners—making Alabama Quilts not only a celebration of the quilting culture within the state but also the many enthusiasts who have played a role in creating and sustaining this important art.
