Book Synopsis Christopher Columbus's Naming in the 'diarios' of the Four Voyages (1492-1504) by : Evelina Guzauskyte
Download or read book Christopher Columbus's Naming in the 'diarios' of the Four Voyages (1492-1504) written by Evelina Guzauskyte and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating book, Evelina Gužauskytė uses the names Columbus gave to places in the Caribbean Basin as a way to examine the complex encounter between Europeans and the native inhabitants. Gužauskytė challenges the common notion that Columbus’s acts of naming were merely an imperial attempt to impose his will on the terrain. Instead, she argues that they were the result of the collisions between several distinct worlds, including the real and mythical geography of the Old World, Portuguese and Catalan naming traditions, and the knowledge and mapping practices of the Taino inhabitants of the Caribbean. Rather than reflecting the Spanish desire for an orderly empire, Columbus’s collection of place names was fractured and fragmented – the product of the explorer’s dynamic relationship with the inhabitants, nature, and geography of the Caribbean Basin. To complement Gužauskytė’s argument, the book also features the first comprehensive list of the more than two hundred Columbian place names that are documented in his diarios and other contemporary sources.

Gramática española: Variación social introduces key grammatical concepts in the Spanish language to intermediate and advanced level learners in a way that emphasizes the connections between the social and the linguistic. This second edition offers several new grammar points and suggestions for further reading. A brand-new component of this edition is its accompanying website featuring extensive activities and exercises covering all the main topics in the textbook. The website also provides comprehensive practice with grammatical structures. Written in Spanish, the textbook offers a review of Spanish grammar by presenting documented variants of linguistic features in the speech of Spanish speakers and underlining the sociohistorical reasons why some varieties come to be considered prestigious while others are not. Using naturally occurring speech from data in research corpora, Gramática española examines multiple grammatical features that vary depending on factors such as place, social group, and situation. Students are introduced to specialized terminology that gives them the ability to identify categories and grammatical constructions, providing them with an in-depth understanding of how sociolinguistic factors influence Spanish grammar. This unique textbook is designed for students at level B1 or higher on the Common European Framework for Languages, and Intermediate High to Advanced High on the ACTFL proficiency scale.

It is intended as a text for upper division Latin American literature survey courses. By focusing on fewer authors but more significant selections from their writings, students will have a greater grasp of major canonical figures as well as emergent voices.
