Book excerpt: As financial turmoil in Europe preoccupies political leaders and global markets, it becomes more important than ever to understand the forces that underpin the European Union, hold it together and drive it forward. This timely book provides a gripping account of the realities of power politics among European states and between their leaders. Drawing on long experience working behind the scenes, Luuk van Middelaar captures the dynamics and tensions shaping the European Union from its origins until today. It is a story of unexpected events and twists of fate, bold vision and sheer necessity, told from the perspective of the keyplayers – from de Gaulle to Havel, Thatcher to Merkel. Van Middelaar cuts through the institutional complexity by exploring the unforeseen outcomes of decisive moments and focusing on the quest for public legitimacy. As a first-hand witness to the day-to-day actions and decisions of Europe’s leaders, the author provides a vivid narrative of the crises and compromises that united a continent. By revisiting the past, he sheds fresh light on the present state of European unification and offers insights into what the future may hold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This trilingual volume sets out to address the forms of otherness and types of the Other through the example of case studies of European literatures and to look at them from an intercultural perspective. The concept of the Other not only varied from epoch to epoch, but it was tied to the development of the respective culture. Reflection on identity and otherness forms the core of the contributions collected in this volume, which focus on texts, authors or myths from French, German, English, Polish, Russian and Swedish literature from the 16th century until today. The selection of texts is intended to demonstrate the complexity and originality of the theme of otherness versus identity in contemporary literary research and to point to ist topicality. The volume sees itself as the result of comparative studies in which literary researchers discuss selected aspects of identityforming otherness, especially on a narrative level.
Book Synopsis Shakespeare, Violence and Early Modern Europe by : Andrew Hiscock
Download or read book Shakespeare, Violence and Early Modern Europe written by Andrew Hiscock and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare, Violence and Early Modern Europe broadens our understanding of the final years of the last Tudor monarch, revealing the truly international context in which they must be understood. Uncovering the extent to which Shakespeare's dramatic art intersected with European politics, Andrew Hiscock brings together close readings of the history plays, compelling insights into late Elizabethan political culture and renewed attention to neglected continental accounts of Elizabeth I. With fresh perspective, the book charts the profound influence that Shakespeare and ambitious courtiers had upon succeeding generations of European writers, dramatists and audiences following the turn of the sixteenth century. Informed by early modern and contemporary cultural debate, this book demonstrates how the study of early modern violence can illuminate ongoing crises of interpretation concerning brutality, victimization and complicity today.

Book Synopsis Biopolitics, Materiality and Meaning in Modern European Drama by : Fraunhofer Hedwig Fraunhofer
Download or read book Biopolitics, Materiality and Meaning in Modern European Drama written by Fraunhofer Hedwig Fraunhofer and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that existing modernisation theories have been unnecessarily one-sided, Hedwig Fraunhofer offers a rewriting of modernity that cuts across binary methodologies - nature and culture, mind and matter, epistemology and ontology, critique and affirmative writing, dramatic and postdramatic theatre. She specifically reworks the biopolitical exclusions that mark modern western epistemology, leading up to modernity's totalitarian crisis point.Fraunhofer reveals the performativity of theatre in its double sense - as theatrical production and as the intra-activity of a dynamic system of multiple relations between human and more-than-human actors, energies and affects. In modern theatre, public and private, human and more-than-human, materiality and meaning collapse in a common life.
Book Synopsis The Je-Ne-Sais-Quoi in Early Modern Europe by : Richard Scholar
Download or read book The Je-Ne-Sais-Quoi in Early Modern Europe written by Richard Scholar and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the je-ne-sais-quoi? How - if at all - can it be put into words? In addressing these questions, Richard Scholar offers the first full-length study of the je-ne-sais-quoi and its fortunes in early modern Europe. He describes the rise and fall of the expression as a noun and as a topic of debate, examines its cluster of meanings, and uncovers the scattered traces of its 'pre-history'. The je-ne-sais-quoi is often assumed to belong purely to the realmof the literary, but in the early modern period it serves to articulate problems of knowledge in natural philosophy, the passions, and culture, and for that reason it is approached here from an interdisciplinary perspective. Placing major figures of the period such as Montaigne, Shakespeare, Descartes, Corneille, and Pascalalongside some of their lesser-known contemporaries, Scholar argues that the je-ne-sais-quoi serves above all to capture first-person encounters with a 'certain something' that is as difficult to explain as its effects are intense. When early modern writers use the expression in this way, he suggests, they give literary form to an experience that twenty-first-century readers may recognize as something like their own.
