And H. S. F., I am indebted to the kindness of Professor Sidgwick and Professor Foxwell respectively, who gave me permission to use questions from their class-room papers of 187 3 - 6. The arrangement has not been altogether an easy matter. A question has often had to be included in a group to which it does not seem quite naturally to belong, because it consists of two parts, more or less heterogeneous, or because it has appeared undesirable to increase indefinitely the number of groups. On the other hand, questions very much alike have been included under two or more different headings, because the subject to which they refer might be fairly treated from various distinct points of view. In the Appendix, besides a number of miscellaneous questions, will be found reprinted in full a few papers set during the year 1886. Although chiefly intended for students, this collection will pro bably be of service to teachers, and very possibly to examiners. It may serve to widen the scope of examinations, which is often very narrow and to draw attention to the fact that in them certain departments of philosophy are hardly touched on at all. The topics discussed include the place of reason in knowledge and life, the possibility of knowledge beyond sense-experience, the theory of perception, the relation of body and mind, alleged philosophical implications of recent scientific doctrines, the problem of evil and the existence of God.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morals a Treatise on the Psycho-Sociological Bases of Ethics The field of psychological research has widened by the triple alliance of psychology, physiology, and sociology - an alliance at once of the most intimate and fundamental nature, and productive of far-reaching results. It need, therefore, occasion no surprise that among the volumes of a scientific series is to be found a treatise dealing with ethical questions. No doubt it is true that ethics and metaphysics have up to the present been closely interwoven. Under the guise of ethical theory, philosophical speculations of the most audacious type are presented to the student. But recent works on ethics have not been numerous, and betray signs of lassitude in those metaphysicians who paraphrase in general terms the works of Kant, and seem more anxious to soar into the realms of lofty thought than to lay the foundations of work that will be both positive and lasting. It would. 7 seem that the time has come for a system of ethics- less ambitious in. its aims, more restricted in its scope, and based on a more rigorous method of treatment. Book excerpt: In Paradigms and Perspectives on Value and Reality, one encounters a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach to the study of timeless questions relating to the human condition. In the book, the reader will encounter the fundamental questions of what the nature of reality is, how one can come to know this, and what our moral obligations are as human beings. The reader will learn from the collected insights of philosophy, religion, science, and psychology, and from diverse cultural perspectives both eastern and western in considering these universal human questions. In living ethical lives, one would like to know both how to act in order to act morally, and also how it is that one could have insight into the foundations of morality. The first question concerns the content of humans’ moral duties, the second concerns the underlying basis for those duties. In this text, one encounters a pluralistic approach to examining both questions and learns much from the interaction between western and eastern methods of ethical inquiry. Another vital aspect of human life that spans across time, culture, and tradition is curiosity about the world around us, humans’ place in it, and how it is that one might form a coherent picture of both. Paradigms and Perspectives on Value and Reality explores this topic in depth and from a variety of cross cultural perspectives. The volume concludes with a final section containing two essays devoted to the discussion of how religion and culture inform current theories of value and reality.
