Book Synopsis History Education at the Edge of the Nation by : Piero S. Colla
Download or read book History Education at the Edge of the Nation written by Piero S. Colla and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores the evolution of history education from a transnational perspective, focusing on border regions in Europe that are considered on the "periphery" of the Nation-State. By introducing this concept and taking into consideration the dynamics of decentralization and the development of minorities’ teaching practices and narratives, the book sheds light on new challenges for history education policy and curriculum design. Chapters take a comparative approach, dissecting and analyzing specific case studies from school systems in France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and Scandinavian countries. In doing so, the editors and their authors weave a systematic account of the impact of local autonomy on educational culture, on the civic remit of schools, and on the narratives embodied by history school canons.
Book Synopsis Heritage and Exchanges by : Julie Dumonteil
Download or read book Heritage and Exchanges written by Julie Dumonteil and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the proceedings of an international seminar held at the University of La Reunion in November 2014, the outcome of a pluridisciplinary project bringing together a number of research centres, including the Federation of Research Centers Observatoire Scientifique de Océan Indien, CALTS Hyderabad, and AUSTRALEX Adelaide. Offering a reflection on scholarship and plural identity constructions, with a specific focus on the Indian Ocean area, the book provides an in-depth discussion of the concepts of “heritage and exchanges” in Indian Ocean countries. The volume is divided into two parts, with the first section, focusing on the concept of heritage, examining intercultural and multilingual legacies which influence the construction and evolution of identity at the level of the individual. The second section deals with the notion and dynamics of exchange, regarding both educational policies in multilingual and intercultural contexts and multilingual and intercultural language learning processes. The heritage and exchanges explored throughout the volume attest to cultural and linguistic pluralities which are part of languages and cultures in contact, but which also reveal a plural yet partitioned world, influenced by subjective representations. This volume is particularly unique given its intense focus on a relatively unexplored geographical area, the Indian Ocean, home to several English and French speaking countries and endowed with a diverse educational and cultural colonial legacy. Furthermore, as a result of its interdisciplinary nature and topics, this bilingual book will appeal to a wide and international readership interested in questions pertaining to multilingualism and interculturalism in learning, teaching and training contexts, and will represent an invaluable source of information for academics, students, and educationalists wishing to specialize in the theory and practice of education.

Download or read book Gender in Learning and Teaching written by Carol A. Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender in Learning and Teaching brings together leading gender and feminist scholars to provide a unique collection of international research into learning and teaching. Through dialogues across national traditions and boundaries, the authors provide new insights into the relations between feminist scholarship of pedagogy, gender and didactics, and offer in-depth accounts that critically investigate how gender relations are enacted, contested and analysed at the level of the classroom, the curriculum, and the institution. Drawing on original research, the chapters explore gender dynamics in relation to student-teacher interactions, gendered classroom practices, curriculum content and knowledge formation in different subjects. The book includes accounts of innovative approaches to curriculum development to address gender inequality. It includes new theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches which provide fresh insights into gendered practices including intersectionality, new material feminism, epistemic gender positioning and cultural anthropology. The chapters span all education phases from early years to higher education. This book makes a compelling case for the continuing relevance of feminist pedagogy and the urgent need for strategies to address gender inequalities in the classroom and beyond. It will be of great interest to academics and postgraduate students in the fields of theory, philosophy and feminist politics of learning and teaching; education and didactics; feminism and pedagogy; sociology and the arts.

This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook presents an international collection of essays examining history education past and present. Framing recent curriculum reforms in Canada and in the United States in light of a century-long debate between the relationship between theory and practice, this collection contextualizes the debate by exploring the evolution of history and social studies education within their state or national contexts. With contributions ranging from Canada, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden, the Netherlands, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, chapters illuminate the ways in which curriculum theorists and academic researchers are working with curriculum developers and educators to translate and refine notions of historical thinking or inquiry as well as pedagogical practice.

Download or read book Regards sur l'histoire de la Caraïbe written by Association of Caribbean Historians. Conference and published by Ibis Rouge. This book was released on 2001 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Moral Education for a Secular Society by : Phyllis Stock-Morton
Download or read book Moral Education for a Secular Society written by Phyllis Stock-Morton and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1988-07-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current controversy over the teaching of values and the role of religion in our public schools is an important and much discussed topic. Stock-Morton's work represents not only a valuable historical investigation, but a useful resource for the review and consideration of our present-day dilemma. France is the only country which has attempted to teach an official secular morality and Stock-Morton's is the first study to describe and trace the development of that effort. During the nineteenth century, the impetus for a practical, secular moral teaching arose, primarily through the concern of those who sought the liberalization of French society and politics. The educational dilemma faced at that time arose from the opposition of the Catholic Church to liberal government. Gradually liberals and radical reached a consensus on the necessity of teaching ethics in the schools while eliminating the presence of the clergy. Their solution and its philosophical basis were anchored in the Enlightenment and the Revolution, but developed in the context of nineteenth-century political and philosophical change. In the 1880s, when the republicans were able to inaugurate universal, free, and secular education, secular ethics became a required course for all. The history of morale laique is significant at a time when our own country is rife with controversy over the role of religion and the teaching of values in the schools. Stock-Morton's thoughtful study represents an important contribution to the literature for those concerned with these significant issues.
