This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its beginnings with Fourier (and as far back as the Babylonian astron omers), harmonic analysis has been developed with the goal of unraveling the mysteries of the physical world of quasars, brain tumors, and so forth, as well as the mysteries of the nonphysical, but no less concrete, world of prime numbers, diophantine equations, and zeta functions. Quoting Courant and Hilbert, in the preface to the first German edition of Methods of Mathematical Physics: "Recent trends and fashions have, however, weakened the connection between mathematics and physics. " Such trends are still in evidence, harmful though they may be. My main motivation in writing these notes has been a desire to counteract this tendency towards specialization and describe appli cations of harmonic analysis in such diverse areas as number theory (which happens to be my specialty), statistics, medicine, geophysics, and quantum physics. I remember being quite surprised to learn that the subject is useful. My graduate eduation was that of the 1960s. The standard mathematics graduate course proceeded from Definition 1. 1. 1 to Corollary 14. 5. 59, with no room in between for applications, motivation, history, or references to related work. My aim has been to write a set of notes for a very different sort of course.

Download or read book Harmonic Analysis on Symmetric Spaces—Euclidean Space, the Sphere, and the Poincaré Upper Half-Plane written by Audrey Terras and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique text is an introduction to harmonic analysis on the simplest symmetric spaces, namely Euclidean space, the sphere, and the Poincaré upper half plane. This book is intended for beginning graduate students in mathematics or researchers in physics or engineering. Written with an informal style, the book places an emphasis on motivation, concrete examples, history, and, above all, applications in mathematics, statistics, physics, and engineering. Many corrections and updates have been incorporated in this new edition. Updates include discussions of P. Sarnak and others' work on quantum chaos, the work of T. Sunada, Marie-France Vignéras, Carolyn Gordon, and others on Mark Kac's question "Can you hear the shape of a drum?", A. Lubotzky, R. Phillips and P. Sarnak's examples of Ramanujan graphs, and, finally, the author's comparisons of continuous theory with the finite analogues. Topics featured throughout the text include inversion formulas for Fourier transforms, central limit theorems, Poisson's summation formula and applications in crystallography and number theory, applications of spherical harmonic analysis to the hydrogen atom, the Radon transform, non-Euclidean geometry on the Poincaré upper half plane H or unit disc and applications to microwave engineering, fundamental domains in H for discrete groups Γ, tessellations of H from such discrete group actions, automorphic forms, and the Selberg trace formula and its applications in spectral theory as well as number theory.

Book Synopsis First Workshop on Grand Unification by : FRAMPTON
Download or read book First Workshop on Grand Unification written by FRAMPTON and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop held at the New England Center provided a timely opportunity for over 100 participants to gather in a unique environment and discuss the present status of the unification of strong and electroweak forces. One reason for the timeliness was perhaps that experiments of the seventies had already lent confirmation to the separate theories of strong and of electroweak forces, so that for the eighties it now seems especially compelling to attempt the grand unification of these two forces. Also, the planned experiments to search for proton decay and the new experiments which are suggestive, though not yet conclusive, of non-zero neutrino rest masses add further stimulus to the theory. Thus, the workshop provided an ideal forum for exchange of ideas amongst active physicists. The presentations at the workshop covered the present status of both theory and experiment with a strong interplay. Also, there were presentations from the discipline of astrophysics which is becoming very intertwined with that of high-energy physics especially when in the latter one is addressing energies and temperatures that were extant only in the first nanosecond of the universe. On experiment, we heard a comprehensive coverage of the four United States proton decay experiments. The Brookhaven-Irvine-Michigan experiment in the Morton Salt Mine at Fairport Harbor, Ohio was discussed by LARRY SULAK, while DAVID WINN talked on the Harvard-Purdue-Wisconsin effort in the Silver King Mine, Utah. MARVIN MARSHAK and RICHARD STEINBERG described respectively the Soudan Mine, Minnesot~ and the Homestake Mine, South Dakot~experiments.

Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis on the Heisenberg Group by : Sundaram Thangavelu
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis on the Heisenberg Group written by Sundaram Thangavelu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heisenberg group plays an important role in several branches of mathematics, such as representation theory, partial differential equations, number theory, several complex variables and quantum mechanics. This monograph deals with various aspects of harmonic analysis on the Heisenberg group, which is the most commutative among the non-commutative Lie groups, and hence gives the greatest opportunity for generalizing the remarkable results of Euclidean harmonic analysis. The aim of this text is to demonstrate how the standard results of abelian harmonic analysis take shape in the non-abelian setup of the Heisenberg group. Thangavelu’s exposition is clear and well developed, and leads to several problems worthy of further consideration. Any reader who is interested in pursuing research on the Heisenberg group will find this unique and self-contained text invaluable.

Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis and Representations of Semisimple Lie Groups by : J.A. Wolf
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis and Representations of Semisimple Lie Groups written by J.A. Wolf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the text of the lectures which were given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Representations of Lie groups and Harmonic Analysis which was held in Liege from September 5 to September 17, 1977. The general aim of this Summer School was to give a coordinated intro duction to the theory of representations of semisimple Lie groups and to non-commutative harmonic analysis on these groups, together with some glance at physical applications and at the related subject of random walks. As will appear to the reader, the order of the papers - which follows relatively closely the order of the lectures which were actually give- follows a logical pattern. The two first papers are introductory: the one by R. Blattner describes in a very progressive way a path going from standard Fourier analysis on IR" to non-commutative harmonic analysis on a locally compact group; the paper by J. Wolf describes the structure of semisimple Lie groups, the finite-dimensional representations of these groups and introduces basic facts about infinite-dimensional unitary representations. Two of the editors want to thank particularly these two lecturers who were very careful to pave the way for the later lectures. Both these chapters give also very useful guidelines to the relevant literature.
Book Synopsis Chaotic Behavior in Quantum Systems by : Giulio Casati
Download or read book Chaotic Behavior in Quantum Systems written by Giulio Casati and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six years ago, in June 1977, the first international conference on chaos in classical dynamical systems took place here in Como. For the first time, physicists, mathematicians, biologists, chemists, economists, and others got together to discuss the relevance of the recent progress in nonlinear classical dynamics for their own research field. Immediately after, pUblication of "Nonlinear Science Abstracts" started, which, in turn, led to the Physica D Journal and to a rapid increase of the research activity in the whole area with the creation of numerous "Nonlinear Centers" around the world. During these years great progress has been made in understanding the qualitative behavior of classical dynamical systems and now we can appreciate the beautiful complexity and variety of their motion. Meanwhile, an increasing number of scientists began to wonder whether and how such beautiful structures would persist in quantum motion. Indeed, mainly integrable systems have been previously con sidered by Quantum Mechanics and therefore the problem is open how to describe the qualitative behavior of systems whose classical limit is non-integrable. The present meeting was organized in view of the fact that scientists working in different fields - mathematicians, theoretical physicists, solid state physicists, nuclear physicists, chemists and others - had common problems. Moreover, we felt that it was necessary to clarify some fundamental questions concerning the logical basis for the discussion including the very definition of chaos in Quantum Mechanics.
Book Synopsis Spectral Theory and Quantum Mechanics by : Valter Moretti
Download or read book Spectral Theory and Quantum Mechanics written by Valter Moretti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the mathematical foundations of quantum theories. It offers an introductory text on linear functional analysis with a focus on Hilbert spaces, highlighting the spectral theory features that are relevant in physics. After exploring physical phenomenology, it then turns its attention to the formal and logical aspects of the theory. Further, this Second Edition collects in one volume a number of useful rigorous results on the mathematical structure of quantum mechanics focusing in particular on von Neumann algebras, Superselection rules, the various notions of Quantum Symmetry and Symmetry Groups, and including a number of fundamental results on the algebraic formulation of quantum theories. Intended for Master's and PhD students, both in physics and mathematics, the material is designed to be self-contained: it includes a summary of point-set topology and abstract measure theory, together with an appendix on differential geometry. The book also benefits established researchers by organizing and presenting the profusion of advanced material disseminated in the literature. Most chapters are accompanied by exercises, many of which are solved explicitly."
