This book was released on 2000-05-25 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julian Schwinger (1918-1994) was one of the giants of 20th Century science. He contributed to a broad range of topics in theoretical physics, ranging from classical electrodynamics to quantum mechanics, from nuclear physics through quantum electrodynamics to the general theory of quantum fields. Although his mathematical prowess was legendary, he was fundamentally a phenomenologist. He received many awards, including the first Einstein Prize in 1951, and the Nobel Prize in 1965, which he shared with Richard Feynman and Sin-itiro Tomonaga for the self-consistent formulation of quantum electrodynamics into a practical theory. His more than 70 doctoral students have played a decisive role in the development of science in the second half of this century. This important volume includes many of Schwinger's most important papers, on the above and other topics, such as the theory of angular momentum and the theory of many-body systems. The papers collected here continue to underlie much of the work done by theoretical physicists today.

Book Synopsis Electromagnetic Radiation: Variational Methods, Waveguides and Accelerators by : Kimball Milton
Download or read book Electromagnetic Radiation: Variational Methods, Waveguides and Accelerators written by Kimball Milton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-13 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julian Schwinger was already the world’s leading nuclear theorist when he joined the Radiation Laboratory at MIT in 1943, at the ripe age of 25. Just 2 years earlier he had joined the faculty at Purdue, after a postdoc with OppenheimerinBerkeley, andgraduatestudyatColumbia. Anearlysemester at Wisconsin had con?rmed his penchant to work at night, so as not to have to interact with Breit and Wigner there. He was to perfect his iconoclastic 1 habits in his more than 2 years at the Rad Lab. Despite its deliberately misleading name, the Rad Lab was not involved in nuclear physics, which was imagined then by the educated public as a esoteric science without possible military application. Rather, the subject at hand was the perfection of radar, the beaming and re?ection of microwaves which had already saved Britain from the German onslaught. Here was a technology which won the war, rather than one that prematurely ended it, at a still incalculable cost. It was partly for that reason that Schwinger joined this e?ort, rather than what might have appeared to be the more natural project for his awesome talents, the development of nuclear weapons at Los Alamos. He had got a bit of a taste of that at the “Metallurgical Laboratory” in Chicago, and did not much like it. Perhaps more important for his decision to go to and stay at MIT during the war was its less regimented and isolated environment.
Book Synopsis Quantum Mechanics In Phase Space: An Overview With Selected Papers by : Thomas L Curtright
Download or read book Quantum Mechanics In Phase Space: An Overview With Selected Papers written by Thomas L Curtright and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-12-09 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wigner's quasi-probability distribution function in phase space is a special (Weyl) representation of the density matrix. It has been useful in describing quantum transport in quantum optics; nuclear physics; decoherence, quantum computing, and quantum chaos. It is also important in signal processing and the mathematics of algebraic deformation. A remarkable aspect of its internal logic, pioneered by Groenewold and Moyal, has only emerged in the last quarter-century: it furnishes a third, alternative, formulation of quantum mechanics, independent of the conventional Hilbert space, or path integral formulations. In this logically complete and self-standing formulation, one need not choose sides — coordinate or momentum space. It works in full phase space, accommodating the uncertainty principle, and it offers unique insights into the classical limit of quantum theory. This invaluable book is a collection of the seminal papers on the formulation, with an introductory overview which provides a trail map for those papers; an extensive bibliography; and simple illustrations, suitable for applications to a broad range of physics problems. It can provide supplementary material for a beginning graduate course in quantum mechanics.

Book Synopsis History of Science as a Facilitator for the Study of Physics by : Roberto Angeloni
Download or read book History of Science as a Facilitator for the Study of Physics written by Roberto Angeloni and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves to enhance scientific and technological literacy, by promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education with particular reference to contemporary physics. The study is presented in the form of a repertoire, and it gives the reader a glimpse of the conceptual structure and development of quantum theory along a rational line of thought, whose understanding might be the key to introducing young generations of students to physics. The recurrent theme here is that the conceptual extension of the concept of natural radiation (symbolized by the constant h) allows an easy method of charting the conceptual development of quantum theory. The repertoire focuses on some momentous events of quantum theory, including the discovery of the constant h, which is one of the fundamental constants of nature and the key to understanding quantum mechanics; the discovery of the photon by Albert Einstein; and Niels Bohr’s model of the hydrogen atom; the experiments which led to disclosing the structure of atomic nuclei in the 1930s; and the discovery of quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics, which constitute the basis of contemporary particle physics.

Book Synopsis Murray Gell-mann - Selected Papers by : Harald Fritzsch
Download or read book Murray Gell-mann - Selected Papers written by Harald Fritzsch and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-02-08 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murray Gell-Mann is one of the leading physicists of the world. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1969 for his work on the classification and symmetries of elementary particles, including the approximate SU(3) symmetry of hadrons. His list of publications is impressive; a number of his papers have become landmarks in physics. In 1953, Gell-Mann introduced the strangeness quantum number, conserved by the strong and electromagnetic interactions but not by the weak interaction. In 1954 he and F E Low proposed what was later called the renormalization group. In 1958 he and R P Feynman wrote an important article on the V-A theory of the weak interaction. In 1961 and 1962 he described his ideas about the SU(3) symmetry of hadrons and its violation, leading to the prediction of the Ω- particle. In 1964 he proposed the quark picture of hadrons. In 1971 he and H Fritzsch proposed the exactly conserved “color” quantum number and in 1972 they discussed what they later called quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the gauge theory of color. These major publications and many others are collected in this volume, providing physicists with easy access to much of Gell-Mann's work. Some of the articles are concerned with his recollections of the history of elementary particle physics in the third quarter of the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis Formation And Evolution Of Black Holes In The Galaxy: Selected Papers With Commentary by : Hans A Bethe
Download or read book Formation And Evolution Of Black Holes In The Galaxy: Selected Papers With Commentary written by Hans A Bethe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-03-04 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In published papers H A Bethe and G E Brown worked out the collapse of large stars and supernova explosions. They went on to evolve binaries of compact stars, finding that in the standard scenario the first formed neutron star always went into a black hole in common envelope evolution. C-H Lee joined them in the study of black hole binaries and gamma ray bursts. They found the black holes to be the fossils of the gamma ray bursts. From their properties they could reconstruct features of the burst and of the accompanying hypernova explosions. This invaluable book contains 23 papers on astrophysics, chiefly on compact objects, written over 23 years. The papers are accompanied by illuminating commentary. In addition there is an appendix on kaon condensation which the editors believe to be relevant to the equation of state in neutron stars, and to explain why black holes are formed at relatively low masses.
