Book Synopsis Measurement and Meaning by : Estanislao Gacitúa-Marió
Download or read book Measurement and Meaning written by Estanislao Gacitúa-Marió and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This yearÂ's Global Economic Prospects argues for reshaping the global architecture of world trade to promote development and poverty reduction. The report focuses on four policy areas: -Using the WTO ministerial to launch a Â"development roundÂ" of trade negotiations that would reduce global trade barriers. -Engaging in global collective action to promote trade outside the negotiating framework of the WTO. -Adopting pro-trade development policies of high-income countries unilaterally. -Enacting new trade reform in developing countries. The report contends that the policies recommended in these four areas would reshape the global trade architecture in a way that would enhance the prospects of developing countries and reduce world poverty. While the most likely scenario is for recovery beginning in 2002, todayÂ's slow growth of global trade and weakening financial flows to all but the most creditworthy countries, has impeded growth in developing countries. Global Economic Prospects 2002 concludes that the long-term promise of well-implemented trade reform is therefore tangible: a world with a much higher standard of living, hundreds of millions lifted out of poverty, and a sharp increase in children living beyond their fifth birthday to become productive citizens of the world.

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Latin American Development written by Julie Cupples and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Latin American Development seeks to engage with comprehensive, contemporary, and critical theoretical debates on Latin American development. The volume draws on contributions from across the humanities and social sciences and, unlike earlier volumes of this kind, explicitly highlights the disruptions to the field being brought by a range of anti-capitalist, decolonial, feminist, and ontological intellectual contributions. The chapters consider in depth the harms and suffering caused by various oppressive forces, as well as the creative and often revolutionary ways in which ordinary Latin Americans resist, fight back, and work to construct development defined broadly as the struggle for a better and more dignified life. The book covers many key themes including development policy and practice; neoliberalism and its aftermath; the role played by social movements in cities and rural areas; the politics of water, oil, and other environmental resources; indigenous and Afro-descendant rights; and the struggles for gender equality. With contributions from authors working in Latin America, the US and Canada, Europe, and New Zealand at a range of universities and other organizations, the handbook is an invaluable resource for students and teachers in development studies, Latin American studies, cultural studies, human geography, anthropology, sociology, political science, and economics, as well as for activists and development practitioners.

Book Synopsis Population Growth In Latin America And U.S. National Security by : John Saunders
Download or read book Population Growth In Latin America And U.S. National Security written by John Saunders and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, this volume deals with both population growth in Latin America and the possible consequences of this growth for the security of the USA. The text analyses the demographic dimensions of the phenomenon and then considers the consequences for US security. It was the first time that the interrelations between national security and population growth were systematically analyzed. The book predicts the raid population growth would have serious economic, social and strategic implications for the USA and rightly predicts the adoption of draconian measures to stem the flow of illegal migrants. Although some aspects of the political landscape have changed since original publication the issue of migration to the USA from Latin America has lost none of its relevance.
Book Synopsis Elites, Masses, and Modernization in Latin America, 1850–1930 by : E. Bradford Burns
Download or read book Elites, Masses, and Modernization in Latin America, 1850–1930 written by E. Bradford Burns and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interactions between the elites and the lower classes of Latin America are explored from the divergent perspectives of three eminent historians in this volume. The result is a counterbalance of viewpoints on the urban and the rural, the rich and the poor, and the Europeanized and the traditional of Latin America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. E. Bradford Burns advances the view that two cultures were in conflict in nineteenth-century Latin America: that of the modernizing, European-oriented elite, and that of the “common folk” of mixed racial background who lived close to the earth. Thomas E. Skidmore discusses the emerging field of labor history in twentieth-century Latin America, suggesting that the historical roots of today’s exacerbated tensions lie in the secular struggle of army against workers that he describes. In the introduction, Richard Graham takes issue with both authors on certain basic premises and points out implications of their essays for the understanding of North American as well as Latin American history.

Book Synopsis Latin America in Transition by : Stanley R. Ross
Download or read book Latin America in Transition written by Stanley R. Ross and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1970-06-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of interdisciplinary papers and commentaries focusing on research problems in Latin America was presented at a conference held 22–23 March 1968 at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. It represents one of the first attempts by experienced scholars to discuss prerequisites and problems for researchers in terms of the methods and approaches, and training needed for field work in Latin America. The authors are distinguished contemporary authorities, both North American and Latin American, and they focus attention on the problems of interdisciplinary and collaborative research. Although more problems are raised than solutions found, frank discussion resulted in a number of suggestions to the U.S. academic community to stimulate a reappraisal of the programs preparing scholars to go abroad. The volume contains papers presented by the principal speakers, panelists, discussants, and commentators. Professor Ross's introduction summarizes the salient points presented in the papers and discussions and includes an extensive examination of Project Camelot.
