Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is about observations of clouds from satellite and ground based instruments. The aim is to reconstruct the three dimensional cloud distributions. This information is use both in climate research and operational meteorological applications. In climate research, cloud observations provide a reference to atmospheric models, which enables optimization of cloud parameterizations. For operational meteorologists clouds are symptoms of atmospherie conditions. Cloud observations therefore are helpful in understanding the current weather (nowcasting) and improving the estimates of how of the atmospheric conditions will evolve (forecasting). In order to obtain cloud field characteristics, analysis envirinments were developed for the interpretation of meteorological satellite measurements in terms of cloud properties. A large effort was put in the evaluation of the results with synoptic observations and measurements from two measurement campaigns. As a result this thesis is composed of theree major research topics: meteosat analysis, AVHRR analysis and combined analysis of ground and satellite observations.

Book excerpt: Determination of the cloud field from the vertical motion field is a problem of long standing, and now we are concerned with the opposite problem, determination of the vertical motion field from the cloud field. This new problem has arisen in connection with meteorological satellites which provide information, basically, on radiation characteristics and on the state of the earth's cloud cover. This information must be employed operationally and with maximum efficiency by meteorologists. The structure and dimensions of various cloud formations and their inherent characteristic features in various synoptic situations may be established on the basis of satellite photographs of cloud systems. It is especially important to obtain such information from regions where meteorological observations are rarely made. Many meteorologists are concerned with synoptic interpretation of information on cloud systems. This interpretation, in final analysis, amounts to a visual study of the cloud field and the introduction of corrections (sometimes quite substantial) into the surface chart, especially for regions where surface information is scanty or entirely lacking. Numerical forecasting requires a quantitative interpretation of cloud information, not a qualitative synoptic interpretation. In the present paper we propose a method of determining the vertical motion field from the cloud distribution.

Book excerpt: A quasi-objective method for deriving 500-mb geopotential heights with the aid of satellite cloud observations is presented. The method uses satellite-observed cloud patterns in conjunction with a forecast 500-mb height field which is separated into additive short- and long-wave component fields. Empirical relationships between the cloud patterns and the short-wave component field are used to modify the pattern of the latter, and regression equations are used to specify extrema values. The 500-mb heights are retrieved by the direct addition of the modified short-wavelength field to the long-wavelength field. Procedures for using this method operationally are presented, and results of real-time modifications can contribute to significant improvements in the analysis.

Book excerpt: Interpretation of the cloud patterns as seen from the altitude of meteorological satellites in terms of quantitative meteorological parameters is a complex problem. This study is confined to the low-level cumuliform cloud types associated with the relatively simple synoptic conditions of the semi-permanent oceanic anticyclone. Statistical methods in the form of discriminant analysis techniques are used to determine the synoptic parameters which make a significant contribution in determining the patterns of these low-level cumuliform clouds. Preliminary results have demonstrated the validity of this technique in determining the parameters when the sample size is large. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary report on a method to estimate cloud ice and water content from archived satellite data is presented. The ultimate purpose is the identification and mapping of clouds with excessive mass to produce a climatology for the SAMSO ABRES program. The only suitable archive of satellite data consists of visible and infrared (IR) window measurements taken by scanning radiometers on board NOAA satellites. Starting in 1973, these measurements have been archived digitally each day in 2048 X 2048 arrays covering each hemisphere. In this report, the visible and IR window measurements are related to cloud mass by simultaneous observation of clouds from satellites and aircraft in 11 cases taken in 1974. Additional cases (including 24 in 1975) will be included in subsequent reports. The satellite data and archive are described. Results of the 1974 cases are given in the form of a simple scattergram relating cloud mass integrated through all altitudes to the joint measurements of IR temperature and visible luminance of the cloud. A preliminary application of the scattergram to a cyclonic storm on 23 and 24 July 1973 is made to identify areas of high cloud mass. (Author).

This book was released on 1980 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer-based processor for satellite imagery was tested on samples of DMSP visible and IR imagery data smoothed to 0.6 n mi resolution. The data were displayed on the AFGL Man-computer Interactive Data Access System so that meteorologists could label small areas (25 x 25 n mi) with one of nine possible cloud categories from the AF 3D Nephanalysis Program (3DNEPH). The computer-based processor labeled the same areas by computing a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (FFT) and comparing the results to average wavenumber spectra for the cloud categories. Classification accuracies were 65% for visible, 65% for IR and 81% for combined data. The classification accuracies were appreciably better than chance and a simplified processor which used only the averaged values of satellite data over an area. Accuracies improved is some categories were merged. The results were also compared to a cloud typing procedure in the 3DNEPH and to some earlier studies. The results were generally good for categories with small-scale cloud features such as cumulus or cirrus clouds, but the overall accuracy of classification for all cloud categories was not significantly better than verifications cited in earlier studies. Two potential refinements to the spectral processors, namely, removing the effects of backgrounds such as land, water, and snow cover and minimizing sensitivity to varying fractional cloud cover from case to case, are also discussed.
