Book excerpt: The interactions between conifers, bark beetles and their common fungal associates have been widely studied, in part due to the severe economic and natural losses that occur annually. Host resistance, involving constitutive and induced defensive measures, and the factors associated with pest success are now widely understood and some losses can be avoided with proper management. Recent research with Norway spruce (Picea abies) has provided additional insight into the chemical pathways involved in host resistance, and has determined that trees exposed to mechanical wounding or fungal inoculation show acquired resistance to future pathogen attacks. This aspect of defense in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) has not been adequately investigated. However, our recent studies indicate that fungal inoculation results in elevated resin flow levels that last up to one year after treatment. Further research in southern Appalachian pines showed that elevated resin flow occurs in response to low intensity fire, and that this response is still present at 18 months after burning. These studies indicate that acquired resistance through induced resin flow in southern pines is a possibility. Further research with beetle or fungal challenges could determine new possibilities for management of both natural and planted stands in order to maximize host defenses against southern pine beetle.

Book excerpt: Forest thinnings implemented with cut-to-length and whole-tree harvesting systems followed by underburning were evaluated for their effects on long-term individual tree and stand level growth responses as well as bark beetle demography in pure, uneven-aged Jeffrey pine ( Pinus jeffreyi Grev. & Balf.) accompanied by isolated California white fir (Abies concolor var. lowiana [Gord.] Lemm.). Based on both dimension and volume growth measures, trees of the unburned whole-tree treatment combination exhibited the greatest individual growth responses. At the stand level, a diminished volume growth response in the whole-tree treatment was especially pronounced in the burned portion, mostly attributable to exaggerated stocking losses, while a superior response in the unburned cut-to-length combination likely reflected not only the absence of detrimental fire impacts but also the benefits of on-site slash retention. For stand level biomass, diminished growth in the whole-tree treatment was again evident, with that in the burned portion again most pronounced, while biomass accrual in the unburned cut-to-length treatment combination was generally comparable to that in the unthinned control. Regarding bark beetle prevalence as quantified through pitch tube counts, the Jeffrey pine beetle ( Dendroctonus jeffreyi Hopkins) generally preferred larger trees before treatment implementation, but after exhibiting mixed pretreatment tendencies concerning stand density demonstrated a posttreatment proclivity toward higher density. Cut-to-length thinning followed by underburning increased the pine beetle population while whole-tree thinning unaccompanied by burning reduced it. Tree mortality was induced by the bark beetle infestation but was not its sole cause. Pitch tube abundance on white fir far exceeded that on Jeffrey pine, and the greatest influence on the fir engraver ( Scolytus ventralis LeConte) population was the prevalence of its host tree. Increasingly utilized in forest restoration efforts in the western USA, the responses presented herein to these thinning and burning practices provide natural resource managers insight into potentially compromised outcomes when implemented in Jeffrey pine and similar dry site forest types.

Book excerpt: The pulping of mountain pine beetle-killed wood can impact tall oil recovery, and severe foaming events exist. These effects may be related to changes in the levels and profiles of extractives in beetle-killed wood. This report summarizes existing knowledge regarding the influence of mountain pine beetle attack on extractives. It expands on this knowledge by using PLS-DA modeling to follow changes in extractives profiles with unattacked-green, red and grey stage woods. Result show that red stage pine has lower levels of glycerides and pimaric acid, but higher levels of sterols, than unattacked green wood. Grey stage woods have extractives profiles that are comparable to unattacked wood, likely due to the biodegradation of glycerides or to abiotic effects. While extractives are implicated in the foaming tendency of TMP pressates and black liquors from beetle-infested wood, other factors related to wood chemistry are just as important when addressing the foaming issue.

Book excerpt: Ponderosa pine delayed mortality, and bark beetle attacks and emergence were monitored on 459 trees for 3 years following one prescribed fire in Idaho and one wildland fire in Montana. Resin flow volume (ml) was measured on 145 fire-injured ponderosa pine 2 and 3 years post-fire. Logistic regression was used to construct two predictive ponderosa pine mortality models, and two predictive bark beetle-attack models. Post-fire delayed tree mortality was greater with the presence of primary bark beetles independent of diameter at breast height (DBH) (cm), and was greater in smaller diameter trees most likely due to direct effects of fire-caused injuries; mortality was lower in trees with less percent bud kill (PBK). The frequency of bark beetle attack was greater in trees with less percent bud kill and greater bole char height proportion (CHIP). Attack frequency was also greater on trees with higher percent bud kill and greater diameter at breast height. Classification tables for all predictive models were presented for application in post-fire management development. Multivariate ANOVA analyses were used to describe the effects of morphological and fire-injury variables on ponderosa pine resin production, and bark beetle attack preference and emergence. Resin production (ml) was significantly greater on burned than unburned trees. Resin flow increased significantly between June and July 1 year following fire and from June to August 2 years following fire. Resin flow was lower on the north bole aspect than the south and west aspects of unburned trees. Resin flow of burned trees significantly increased through the summer and was greatest in trees with high pre-fire live crown length (m) (LCL). Resin flow of unburned trees differed significantly by year, month, bole aspect, and live crown length. Resin increased by month and live crown length, decreased from 2005 to 2006, and was less on the northern bole aspect than all other aspects. Bark beetles preferred to attack fire-injured trees, especially within bole-scorched areas. No significant differences in bark beetle emergence were found between fire-injured and non fire-injured trees. On burned sites, beetle emergence was greatest from larger diameter trees with less severe fire injury. Western pine beetle (Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte) had the greatest emergence from fire-injured ponderosa pine, and Ips pini (Say) had significantly greater emergence from non fire-injured ponderosa pine.

Book excerpt: For the first time, a synthesis on the research work done in Europe on all Bark And Wood Boring Insects In Living Trees (BAWBILT) is presented. As final product of a four-year research project gathering together 100 scientists from 24 countries, the book is the fruit of a real collective synthesis in which all European specialists have participated. It reviews and comments on all the European literature, while considering the biological (trees, insects, associated organisms, and their relationships) and forest management aspects. However, although focused on the European forest, it also compares the available information and interpretations to those concerning similar species in other continents. It ends with propositions of research priorities for Europe. The book is directed to all scientists and students concerned with forest entomology and ecology, as well as to forest managers and all scientific public interested in forest biology.
